“Actually, it’s better if some memories are forgotten. Why do you have to go and remember them?” Yao Yuanjing asked this from the standpoint of a friend. The things that Ji Naitang had experienced as a child were too painful. It was a good thing that he could forget some of them. He really couldn’t understand why he had to try to remember them.
Ji Naitang replied, “That’s because I can’t remember what I should remember, but I remember what should be forgotten.”
“You have the symptoms of avoidance and numbness in regards to PTSD. You are choosing to forget certain things. So I am reminding you again that the memories that you have forgotten may be more painful than the ones that you do remember.”
Ji Naitang had most of his memories. He had only lost a small portion after the car accident twelve years ago. What he remembered already made him extremely miserable, so Yao Yuanjing found it really difficult to imagine what kind of memories the ones that he selectively chose to forget were.
Ji Naitang remained silent. Of course he understood this rationale. But he always felt that the lost memories were very important to him. He must have forgotten something crucial, so he had to remember it.
Ji Naitang had agreed to see Yan Yebai the next day, so he naturally wouldn’t break his word. He arrived early in the morning at Yan Yebai’s private clinic.
“It’s really difficult just to see you.” Yan Yebai motioned Ji Naitang to sit down. He smiled and asked, “Are you truly busy or do you not trust my ability?”
Yan Yebai was considered one of the top psychologists. Most people needed to make an appointment and wait in line to see him, so Ji Naitang naturally trust his ability.
“I’m truly busy. I was a little injured.”
“What?”
“Just small injuries.”
Ji Naitang obviously didn’t want to say more, so Yan Yebai didn’t ask anymore. They had known each other for two or three years now. Ji Naitang would come over from time to time. But most of the time, he only came to sit and chat. There were very few times when he would cooperate with treatment.
“My signboard would fall one day because of you.”
Although Yan Yebai said that, what he really cared about wasn’t some signboard. He truly wanted to help Ji Naitang and he was really distressed over what Ji Naitang had experienced.
“Aren’t I here now?” Ji Naitang had a smile on his face and he looked very relaxed. Yan Yebai slightly narrowed his eyes and observed, “It looks like you encountered some good things these past few days. You’ve been in a good mood lately.”
Ji Naitang parried with him. “Humans have bad moods, so they will naturally have good moods. What is there to be shocked about?”
“No ~ Other people are like this, but you are not. We’ve known each other for so long, but when were you ever in a good mood?!”
Ji Naitang smiled without speaking. Yan Yebai struck while the iron was hot. “Your current state of mind is very suitable for treatment. Do you want to try it?”
When he asked this, he had actually prepared himself to being rejected. He had even thought about what he would say next. But to his surprise, Ji Naitang nodded, which made him unable to react for a moment.
Ji Naitang snapped his fingers in front of Yan Yebai’s face. “Wake up ~ ”
“Are you the psychologist or am I?!” Yan Yebai stood up and started to prepare. It was rare that Ji Naitang agreed, so he had to take advantage of this opportunity.
He was going to perform hypnosis therapy, mainly to make Ji Naitang recall the memories that he had forgotten after the car accident twelve years ago. This didn’t sound very difficult, but Ji Naitang couldn’t do it for very long. That was because he had to guide Ji Naitang’s memories back to his childhood. And Ji Naitang vehemently opposed those dark and painful childhood memories.
“Then let’s start.”
