Chapter 42

“What exactly are you doing with the sect leader?” Li Wuzhang asked.

“Naturally, it’s…dual cultivation.” Wu Yanfu smiled ambiguously, “The Sect Leader and I were just getting to the climax, and you couldn’t have picked a time either sooner or later, yet, just had to appear at this time, what a nuisance.”

Bai Tan had just come out of the secret room and upon hearing that, all he wanted to do was slap the other to death with one hit. Seeing that Li Wuzhang was also there and upon meeting his eyes, he immediately looked away. Bai Tan’s heart jumped.

The sentence from earlier, he couldn’t have heard them by coincidence, right?

If he were to misunderstand, then what should he do?

Then, Li Wuzhang turned his head to look around, “Sect leader, this subordinate met that Gu Ren just now and exchanged a few blows with him. Fu Lu must be nearby then. We should be extra careful.”

“Oh?” Bai Tan was surprised by his words, he could hear that his voice wasn’t quite right. But with his mask on, he couldn’t tell what was wrong, so he walked over and checked his pulse, as expected, he found the abnormality in his pulse. “You’re injured?”

Li Wuzhang shook his head, “It is not a big deal.”

“Let me* see.” Bai Tan ordered, he observed the other for a bit and still couldn’t find any clues due to his black clothes, he didn’t even bother to say anything as he tried to pry the other’s clothes open.

Li Wuzhang caught his wrist, he still had his friendly tone, but the palm of his hand was scorching hot, “It’s just some scratches, for the sect leader to care this much about this subordinate, this subordinate feels too overwhelmed.”

Bai Tan’s brows furrowed, he glanced at Wu Yanfu on the side before he pulled open his clothing. He scratched harshly at his chest, got some blood as his other hand took off Li Wuzhang’s mask, he lifted his blood-stained finger up to his lips, “Drink it. High-quality yao ren blood has the power of healing, this is my* reward to you.”

Wu Yanfu looked down at the claw marks on his chest, then looked at Li Wuzhang again. The other lowered his head, holding onto the hand that Bai Tan reached up to his mouth, his adam’s apple bobbed once, just as he was about to take it in, Wu Yanfu grabbed Bai Tan’s hand. His face was covered by dark clouds, “Master, my blood, isn’t something that anyone can drink.”

Bai Tan yanked his hand, “If you still call me* your master, then do not meddle with whoever I want to reward your blood too.”

“If you want him dead, then go ahead and reward it. Ah-Chi’s blood, aside from master, no one else can drink it.”

Bai Tan was startled, “Is that true? Why is it so?”

Wu Yanfu let go, “There’s a quality difference in bodies. Whether you believe it or not is up to you.”

Bai Tan hesitated a bit, in the end, he didn’t dare risk Li Wuzhang’s life and pulled back his hand.

Li Wuzhang nodded, “It’s fine, this subordinate has just taken some Jin Chuang Medicine, the one who should be worried is you. This person……” He glanced at Wu Yanfu, then dragged Bai Tan to the side, sending his voice mentally, “He……towards him, does the Sect Leader……can he save you?”

“No.” Bai Tan shook his head, replying to him without a sound, “He obviously can’t save me.”

“Then we can just go and steal the Rengu Nian Beads. There are thirty-two Rengu Nian Beads, if we just take one, Mi Lansheng doesn’t seem like he will turn his back on us.”

Bai Tan waved his hand, “I’ve* already sworn, so I definitely won’t touch the Mandala Sect’s sacred treasure.”

To be able to live longer, he was obviously willing. Even if he knew that throughout the martial community he was known as the disciple who’d killed his master for his power, an evildoer who did whatever and went against the heaven’s way. But something as despicable as going against someone’s trust, that was extremely unbearable for him.

The one thing he hated the most in life was others lying to him, so he wouldn’t lie to others after making a promise himself.

Even hiding under the mask, Li Wuzhang couldn’t smile anymore, he clenched his teeth, then said, “But if the sect leader only has one month left of life to live, what should be done?”

Bai Tan smiled strangely, “You’re not the roundworm inside of my* stomach, how do you know how long I* can still live? Even if I only have one month left, I* will not break my promise.”

As he finished, he thought, if his alluring bone had turned ill from betrayal, then most probably, he’d already fallen ill when the old demon sent him to the Yue Yin Palace, yet he still lived for so long afterward……

Bai Tan glanced at the little segment of lifeline left on his palm, he calculated, at least, he should still have one to two years of time left, right? No matter how unlucky, it wouldn’t be as short as one month.

Li Wuzhang didn’t continue, but in his heart, he made a decision.

Wu Yanfu saw his two traitor disciples looking at each other as if they were flirting and knew that the two were speaking to each other mentally. What secrets were they talking about? Just as he was about to walk over, the flash of a figure outside of the backdoor leading to the Path of Asura was seen.

“The Gu Ren’s most likely here.” Just as Li Wuzhang’s voice faded out, numerous arrows flew in from the front. All three of them immediately hid behind the buddha statue, just to see arrows flying in like an attacking rainstorm, instantly filling the ground and wall up completely. The Awakened One at the door moved after hearing the sounds, he turned and jumped towards the arrows’ direction.

“It might be the people of ‘Gong Tang[1]’ from the Yue Yin Palace, here to get past the Liudao Lunhui in order to participate in the Great Wu Lin Assembly. Remember that they use their large number to their advantage, one person needs two helpers at most, this Fu Lu sure is shameless.”

Wu Yanfu chuckled coldly, seeing Bai Tan and Li Wuzhang standing together to block the arrows with their sleeve, he instantly used one of his ghost vines to roll Gu Bai up. He held onto him and then leaped out of the backdoor as if they were flying, falling into the thick black mist. It was unknown how far they’d traveled with the “Wu Feng Nong Yue” move, but a long while had passed before they stopped.

Just as they stopped, Bai Tan struggled out of his hold. The soles of his feet came into contact with the hard-stone floor, he looked around to finally realize that they were on an arched stone bridge, unable to see where the ends led to.

On each of the two rows of bridge piers, an eternal flame[2], the flames were white and pale, extremely weak. Yet, with the help from the light of the flames, barely, he was able to make out a puddle of thick, bloody red water below the bridge. Countless white bones and different types of weapons flowed on the water surface. The Asura Field with blood running like lakes, scenes of people plunged within misery and suffering was quite a sight.

On the water’s surface on both sides of the bridge, countless ghosts loomed and slowly gathered towards them.

Bai Tan had been afraid of ghosts since he was young, especially after killing Wu Yanfu, he had become so scared of ghosts he could die. Seeing this sight just then, he couldn’t help it as his back became cold and scooted towards Wu Yanfu’s side.

Wu Yanfu took the chance and gave the other a full-on hug, one hand holding tight onto the thin hand that the young male held “Shiyue” with, swaying in the air a little, with a flash of cold light, the ghost shadows avoided it as if they were terrified. He smirked, “See, this weapon originally belonged to your master, it’s killed countless people, it has so much malicious energy that even ghosts are afraid of it.”

Once Bai Tan heard that he wanted to just throw Shiyue away. He got out of Wu Yanfu’s grasp, forcefully walked back a few steps and called for Li Wuzhang a few times. Hearing no response from the front nor the sound of anyone following from behind, he couldn’t help but look back. Once looking, he felt chills all throughout his bones and skin.

He saw the white-haired male stiffened in one place, head lowered, his long, blue eyes stared at him without blinking at all. They were shining slightly, his hands hung low by the side of his body, he was shaking non-stop as if he was possessed by a ghost.

……Possessed by a ghost.

Bai Tan backed away a step, grip tightening on Shiyue in his hand. Even with the dangerous weapon in hand, it was only just a look, it couldn’t dispel the fear within him, “Ah-Chi? Tian Su? What happened to you? What are you standing there for?”

The man raised his head without a word, he twisted his neck as his bone let out two cracking sounds. He raised his arms, and with a stiff and unnatural movement, walked towards him.

Bai Tan’s eyes widened, he yelled strongly, “Tian Su!”

The man walked to his front, stopped, and stared at him still, “Tan’er……”

Bai Tan’s legs went soft from terror, staggering as he fell to the floor, he really was, really was possessed!

So, the reason why the rest of the old demon’s soul wasn’t in the Formless Realm was because it was here!

He immediately raised Shiyue, wanting to slice right through the other, but considering the other’s body, he didn’t dare act. He only held the tip of his blade against the other’s chest, speaking viciously, “Go away! Stop following me!”

His long, thin, pale white fingers held onto the handle tightly, letting fresh blood leak down the sharp blade’s trail. The man’s figure, visible by the candle lights, bent down. His hand reached out to his cheek, Bai Tan instantly wanted to turn his head to avoid it, but couldn’t, his earlobe ended up getting scratched by the other’s thumb. The action was full of warmth and affection, there wasn’t a hint of murderous intent. Yet Bai Tan still shivered, all his hair was standing up on end. He got up, wanting to run for it but was caught by Wu Yanfu, like a little animal, held by the back of the neck and pressed into his embrace.

“Tan’er, be obedient, don’t be so afraid of shizun……shizun wouldn’t do anything to you.”

Bai Tan was almost frozen from shock, his teeth were clattering, “Aren’t, aren’t you here to take my life?”

“Why would I? I don’t even have enough time to dote on you.” A soft sigh crawled into his ear, Bai Tan didn’t dare lift his head at all, his head was almost entirely buried into his collar, his whole body shook violently. He had no energy left as he listened to Wu Yanfu asking in a low voice, “Shizun wants to know, did you ever miss shizun, even slightly?”

A sudden pain and tickling sensation came from his alluring bone as if it was being scratched by hundreds of claws, Bai Tan shook his head before harshly pushing Wu Yanfu away. Big droplets of tears trickled down from his eyes, panicking as he backed off, wishing that all of this was just a nightmare, one that he could just immediately wake up from, with no need to face the demon that he avoided at all cause.

While Wu Yanfu was alive, he lived in torment, yet even after Wu Yanfu died, he still suffered from it.

He’d wished, after he died, he wouldn’t be disturbed by this man’s soul, leaving no peace for him.

Wu Yanfu’s heart jumped from seeing his reaction, he instantly pulled the other over to press him against the bridge pier. He felt like there were tsunamis in his chest, even the emotions he felt from the year he’d stepped onto the throne of Wu Lin Overlord couldn’t compare to his joy now.

This little wolf cub still had him in his heart after all.

Bai Tan kept his eyes shut, thinking that it was his death date, yet only felt a coldness on his forehead, the scorching red mark, the symbol of Concubine Ming seemed to have been kissed, “Then I will be able to……rest in peace.”

Bai Tan was immediately stunned, he felt the hands pressing his shoulders soften before coming back to his senses, opening his eyes.

The white-haired male stood in front of him, dazed and unmoving as if he’d lost his soul.

“Tian Su?” Bai Tan called to him a couple times, seeing no reactions, he slapped him a couple times.

Wu Yanfu blinked, touching his own cheeks, “Master, what is it?”

Bai Tan exhaled, thinking of the words Wu Yanfu’s soul had said just now before leaving, it still felt a bit sudden. He looked around at loss for a bit, the old demon, why did he say something like that to him?

Thinking like that, there was something unbearable he couldn’t say out loud, Bai Tan swung Shiyue around then replied, “Just now, you were possessed by that old demon’s soul, he said some weird stuff to me*.”

Wu Yanfu sucked in a cold breath, “That scary? What did he say?”

“Nothing, I* don’t understand it either.” After he’d finished, Bai Tan turned around, then realized that the direction was wrong after a few steps, then turned back. Wu Yanfu followed right after Bai Tan, stepping on the shadow behind him to play with…For a newbie like him, this Liudao Lunhui Formation was just like hell with no exit, but to him, it was the same as entering and exiting his own house. No matter where they went, it’d be a piece of cake, it was rather interesting to play with the little cub a bit.

As the master and disciple were having a peaceful time over here, it didn’t seem too nice on Mi Lansheng and Ji Du’s side.

Just as they passed the stone bridge, walking into the cave that led the road from the Asura Path to the Human Path, Ji Du heard the young male on his back start to cry. His crying sounds that echoed through the huge rock cave, sounded oddly sorrowful and pitiful as if it was an imperishable ghost crying out their tragic story. Even someone as vicious and cold-hearted as Ji Du felt uneasy, it made Mi Lansheng extremely annoyed, he stopped to ask, “What’s up with you?”

Fu Lin choked out his words bit by bit, “My[3]……stomach hurts, I want to urinate.”

Ji Du couldn’t help but let the other off of his back, he helped him walk to the back of a stone statue, then said, “Hurry up.”

The young male spoke as he sobbed, “If you don’t release my$ acupuncture points, how do I$ pee?”

Ji Du’s brows furrowed, thinking that a sickened one like him wouldn’t be able to do any tricks in front of him anyway, he released his points. Just as his finger moved, he commanded a snake to crawl onto his neck, “Let me say the ugly words first, if you dare to call the Gu Ren over, when my little pet’s unhappy, with just one little light bite……”

“I won’t, I definitely won’t.” Fu Lin shook his head, he leaned against the stone statue with the hand that was already pressed against it, he unfastened his belt. Ji Du didn’t have any interest in watching a kid peeing, he turned his head and just as he heard the water flowing noises of pee, the end of his pants were wet. Ji Du always dressed nicely and he especially treasured his robes, he leaped away instantly in raging anger. Yet Fu Lin lowered his head like he couldn’t help it, then he squatted down again, wanting to take a dump.

“I, I didn’t mean to.”

“Shit[4]!” Ji Du went to the front of the stone statue in disgust, ripping off the lower part of his clothing.

Mi Lansheng watched from the side and couldn’t contain his laughter as he laughed out loud before his laughter even stopped, he heard something from their direction. The figure behind the stone statue flashed by and merged into the wall, leaving no trace behind.

“Crap!” Ji Du sprinted over, as he thought, Fu Lin wasn’t behind the stone statue anymore, then he also heard noises from up above. He looked up to see someone with a pair of bloody red eyes suddenly appearing on top of him.

In the next moment, his neck tightened, his whole body was flipped by a strong force, pushing him into the stone statue harshly. His head immediately began to bleed, making him pass out[5]. Mi Lansheng flew over but the figure that held onto the young male on the wall was skipping all over the place as swift as a mandrill, in just a few jumps, it disappeared into the darkness.

“Lin’er?”

Hearing the familiar calling, Fu Lin opened his eyes, he jumped into the embrace of the man in front of him and cried out shakily as if he was screaming, “Daddy!”

“Lin’er has worked hard.” The man rubbed the head of the young male in his embrace, the ferocious scar on the corner of his eye also seemed to soften. His eyes landed on the red mark on the young male’s neck, his fingertip followed and landed there as well, he rubbed it a little then quickly pulled open the young male’s clothing, causing his face to change instantly, “Lin’er, what happened?”

Fu Lin looked at the slightly trembling gu ren on the floor, his mouth curved up as he leaned his head against the man’s built chest. “Daddy, Lin’er was violated! Lin’er doesn’t want to live anymore!”

Fu Lu was silent for a while, then asked darkly, “Who dared to mess with my son?”

“It was someone of that little evildoer’s……” Fu Lin shook his head with all his might, crying without a sound as he burrowed even deeper into the man’s body, “Daddy, Lin’er’s so scared, Lin’er doesn’t wanna sleep by himself anymore.”

“Then sleep with daddy from now on.” Fu Lu took off his outer coat and wrapped it around his son in his embrace, patting his back through the layer of clothing, “Lin’er, take a little nap first, that little evildoers here’s. Wait a bit, help daddy catch him, then you can punish him however you want after!”

Fu Lin kissed the man’s cheek, “Lin’er understands, daddy cares the most about Lin’er.”

The time before dawn was the darkest time of the world, dark mist from all around got even heavier.

Watching the black stone cave at the end of the stone bridge from far away, Bai Tan slowed his steps.

Then, a “hua la” sound of water came from nowhere.

Bai Tan stopped in his tracks, his eyes shot in the direction of the sound like lighting, “Who’s there?!”

Just as he finished, a mark suddenly appeared in the bloody water, speeding towards him quickly. Bai Tan dodged it instantly, bumping into Wu Yanfu’s embrace. A source of bloody mist exploded from nearby, revealing a figure. It landed on the bridge pier with all fours on the ground, he had a beast’s blood-red eyes, all the muscles on his back protruded, ghost vines wiggled all over his body, all were at least the size of a child’s forearm, it was obviously the Gu Ren.

Bai Tan held tight onto Shiyue, but Wu Yanfu kept him behind him with his hand, “The ghost vines on the Gu Ren’s body are the same as mine, I can go up against him.”

“Fu Lu, since you’re here, stop sneaking around.”

“Tian Su, I didn’t think that even now, you would still be protecting that little evildoer.”

Loud laughter flew over from nearby, a figure leaped across the water surface, landing a few meters behind the Gu Ren. One of his hands held the nine holed bili, the other was holding onto a small, sickly figure, the string of Rengu Nian Beads on his neck was letting out strong white lights, making the young male in his arms seem even more dead.

Bai Tan’s heart was heavy. Mi Lansheng and the others weren’t able to keep Fu Lin.

As if reading his mind, Fu Lu smiled, “Just those people, wanting to counter me by holding my son hostage? They sure don’t know their own strengths, why do you think I was ranked number one of the seven masters?”

Wu Yanfu smiled slightly, “If your son wasn’t a Gu Mu, you wouldn’t be worth anything.”

Translator’s Comments: I thought Bai Tan’s first few reactions to Wu Yanfu being possessed was funny, but then Fu Lin pissing on Ji Du and then continues to shit right after really got me lmao

Xiao’s Comments: Well, Wu Yanfu sure likes to tease Bai Tan…he’s very sadistic…I think it’s going to come back and bite him in the ass later…

Translator’s Notes:

[1] Gong Tang (弓堂) – Literally means “Bow / Hall”

[2] Eternal flame (长明灯) – pretty sure these are actual “eternal” flames in this setting, but these were also the lights that every household would light up on lunar new year’s eve, and once it is lit, it should not be blown out and only die down naturally from its wax melting out.

[3] He addressed himself in a way that princes could address themselves by, with literal meanings of “small king.”

[4] He actually didn’t say “shit”, he said “unlucky” (晦气) which was weird when put into English, so I just put “shit!” based on the situation.

[5] Fun fact, the original text literally said that he “died”, so I was very confused but looking a few chapters ahead, I figured out he’s actually isn’t dead.
