Chapter 18, Words of Love

The cool sea breeze whistled past as wave after wave slammed onto the shore.

Hare’s kiss was just like those waves. Intense, vicious, and with a breathtaking feeling of his incredible possessiveness.

His hand slid over from Ye Zi’s jaw to the back of his head, holding him in place and turning sideways, deepening their kiss to the point where it seemed like he wanted to deprive him of all the air in his mouth, to leave his fiery brand inside of his body.

Ye Zi should’ve punched Hare.

But he didn’t.

He shouldn’t feel anything from this. Nothing at all.

But the instant he was kissed by Hare, all the irritation and anger disappeared from his chest in an instant, and another impulse was screaming out in his body. He never felt like that before. It was strange and somewhat frightening, but inexplicably familiar.

He was horrified to find that he actually had such a bone-rooting attachment to Hare’s kiss.

This attachment left him unable to resist and unable to escape, or rather, his instincts would not allow him to do so.

Hare pushed him down onto the hard surface of a rock nearby and continued to kiss him, over and over again.

Occasionally, Ye Zi would be pulled back by reason and try to move away, but Hare would definitely chase him with his lips, and quickly, their lips would intertwine again.

Ye Zi’s occasional unconscious responses had an obvious soothing effect for Hare. His wild rampage at the beginning slowly dwindled down, becoming extremely gentle as if he was kissing something as fragile as fine porcelain.

The moonlight poured down on them, making the pale-colored hair that slid down Hare’s ears appear nearly white under its illumination. The eyelashes that were so close to his face were faintly trembling, just like the quivering wings of a cicada.

Unknowingly, Ye Zi whose body had been drained of strength slid down to the ground while Hare was knelt in front of him, holding his face and kissing him tirelessly.

…

In the end, Ye Zi didn’t get to ask him anything.

It was already 12:30 in the night when they got back to the hotel. He was tired. So tired that he fell asleep quickly.

He had a dream.

It was dusk. He dreamt that he had come to the beach alone.

Hare stood barefoot in front of him, looking out at the red sun as it sinks into the ocean. Countless birds flew high above them in the boundless skies while the orange waves rippled underneath. A view formed like the large brushstrokes of an oil painting.

“Ah Zi. Do you hear it?” Hare’s voice came. “Do you hear the ocean calling out to us? Come. Come. Come.”

“…”

Hare turned around and looked at Ye Zi with his tender gaze, reaching his hand out to him. His silhouette had been dyed completely red by the light of the setting sun. “Come, Ah Zi. Just like this. Let’s hold hands and go out into the depths of the ocean. Step after step, just like it calls out to us.”

“Ah Zi, did you know? Human life withers away in just a short few decades, but nature continues on in its eternal life. Let us join together and become one with nature, okay? That way, we can be together forever.”

“The moment it all ends, we shall attain eternal life.”

…

……

Ye Zi could no longer remember much of that dream after he woke up.

In less than a moment, he recalled that kiss from last night and turned beet red.

God, that was unbelievable. What was that? Hare is four years younger than him! And a boy to boot! He didn’t refuse, didn’t resist him, and didn’t punch him…They actually…kissed for at least half an hour last night?!

Ye Zi forced himself to forget about it, but when he looked in the mirror after washing his face, his slightly swollen lips reminded him again. Whenever he was daydreaming, he would unconsciously touch his lips, and as if he was struck by electricity, he would quickly retract his finger. He didn’t pay attention when others tried to speak to him either, and would inadvertently think back to what happened last night.

Ye Zi began avoiding him unconsciously. Anytime he saw his figure appear, he would quickly leave.

He felt off, but his reason told him that he would go back to normal if he avoided Hare for a few days. He thought of distracting himself by dating Taozi, but thinking back to what Hare told him last night…what a headache! In order to endure the safety of the people around him, it was better for him to not get too close to anyone else.

He had successfully avoided him for the whole day, and yet Ye Zi saw him again that night.

But there was no way around it. Everyone got together to play games and it wouldn’t be nice if Ye Zi did not go.

The game they played this time was one the girls liked. The loser had to confess to someone in “the most romantic way”. And as for that romanticness…the rules were actually pretty loose and not too difficult to implement. Some boys would pick up a conch and give it to someone else, then slap on an “I like you” and that was it.

But of course, things got messier and messier as things went on. Their great class monitor(♀) pushed Taozi down and gave her a kiss on the cheek, confessing to her. Photos of the two of them were instantly uploaded to the school’s forums. Probably set to be the next top post.

Soon, a joyous thing happened. Hare lost.

Even the girls who were playing ball beside them gathered over, all with looks of anticipation. They all wondered who he was going to confess to.

Well, even if it was just a game, anyone would still be overjoyed to be confessed to by such a hottie. If they record it, they could definitely obsess over his voice for at least a week. If it was a video…that would probably last an entire month.

Ye Zi really wanted to leave.

Subconsciously, he felt that Hare would confess to him.

He was worried he would!

It would make him feel very awkward and embarrassed…In fact, he hated that he was actually looking forward to it!

Hare smiled and asked everyone, “What kind of confession does everyone want to see?”

The girls were quickly riled up. “Hm…A bit different from the earlier ones. It has to be…super super romantic and classy…” “Hey don’t make things hard for him.” “It has to be sweet!” “Super ultra sweet…” “You guys have too many needs. If it were up to me, I’d say something touching would be good.” “Damn, that’s the hardest one…”

Hare thought about it for a while and said, “I’ll make it relatively simple. I’ll just do a poem.”

“Poetry? Yeah! From what country? English or Chinese?”

“French.”

“You know French? Can you do it once in French and once in Chinese?”

“Sure.”

Finally, all the noise stopped. Hare began.

Hare’s eyelashes fluttered and his lips moved. He began to recite:

“Sur toutes les pages lues,

Sur toutes les pages blanches,

Pierre sang papier ou cendre,

J’écris ton nom.

…”

Even though they couldn’t understand French at all, his voice really was very nice to listen to. It was clear, soft, and gentle. Even though nobody understood anything after the French bit ended, they were all cheering with excitement. Of course, they all went quiet when they heard the Chinese.

“Upon the pages of which I’ve read,

Upon the blank pages,

Stone, blood, paper, or ash,

I write your name;

Upon the wonders of the nights,

Upon the white bread of day,

Upon the seasons betrothed,

I write your name;

Upon my ruined sanctuaries,

Upon my fallen lighthouses,

Upon the walls of my boredom,

I write your name;

Upon my heart,

Upon my past, present and future,

Upon my soul,

Upon the footsteps of death,

I write your name;”

While chanting thus, Hare raised his head slowly to meet his calm gaze on Ye Zi. His pale eyes glistened, Ye Zi’s heart thumped. He wanted to escape but he could not even move. In truth, he wanted to continue. For the rest of his life, he wanted to listen…

Hare continued, his tone rising slightly, becoming slower, and quieter.

“And by the power of a word,

I start my life over,

I was born to know you,

To call your name,[1]

Ah…Zi.”

After the poem ended, everyone was silent for at least a dozen seconds before they cheered and applauded. Some girls had gotten so excited that they screamed. Ye Zi had no idea what they were cheering about. He had no idea what effects those last two words could create. He suddenly stood up and left.

Clearly, it was in the middle of the night, but it felt like he was walking under the hot sun.

His body was burning up and his mind was blank.

He was trying to hold back his emotions, but they were inexplicable and uncontrollable. He was ashamed to be happy. Scared of being expectant. The blood in his body was tumbling and his cells seemed to expand. His nerves could finally stretch out as if he had been waiting a long time for this feeling.

After he walked into his room and sat on the bed, he casually touched his cheek with his hand.

Then, to his surprise, he found himself in tears.

This is absurd!

He turned on the TV and scanned through a few channels, but he turned it off again.

As soon as he turned on his phone, his inbox kept on ringing non-stop. They were all texts from Hare, filling up his inbox completely. And it still continued. He would send one over every two or three minutes.

Casually tossing his phone to the side, Ye Zi told himself to calm down. He kept reminding himself that Hare was a guy, and a dangerous lunatic to boot. He definitely couldn’t get too involved with him. He couldn’t drop his guard, couldn’t accept him, or hold these strange feelings for him.

Suddenly, his door opened.

He casually said, “Xiao Zheng, you’re back?”

Zheng was the surname of the boy who was rooming with him.

However, the other party did not make a single sound. He just walked over, soft footsteps advancing step after step.

As if sensing something, Ye Zi suddenly raised his head and his eyes went wide. “You…How did you…”

“I changed rooms with Brother Zheng.”

“Change it back!”

Hare did not speak. He just came even closer. “Didn’t you read the texts I sent you?”

“…”

“I called you 15 times and sent you 60 text messages in total. Why didn’t you look at them? Why did you leave? Because you didn’t like my confession? Didn’t like my kiss? Does it disgust you? Make you feel bad? As expected, you’re still thinking that Taozi is better, aren’t you?” Hare’s voice was soft and gentle, but his questions were sharp and aggressive. His eyes were submerged in a dark gloom, unable to be deciphered. After a while, he heard him continue. “Hey, Ah Zi. What will it take to get you to stay by my side? To choose me? What?”

“Don’t come any closer!” Ye Zi frowned.”

“What?” Hare suddenly scoffed.

In the next moment, he pushed Ye Zi down onto the bed. The curtains swayed while the sounds of the splashing waters of the ocean and the cicadas played outside the windows.

Hare’s eyes were grim. He asked, “Do you know where you’ve been looking at since I came in?”

“Where?”

Hare tapped on his lips with his finger, saying, “Here.”

Ye Zi’s face turned red in an instant and he turned away. “Stop joking.”

“It felt good didn’t it? The kiss.”

“There’s no way it did!” Ye Zi rolled over and tried to sit up, but his arm was being pulled by Hare. So, in the next moment, he ended up straddling Hare instead.

Hare’s pale hair spilled over the pure white sheets, revealing his smooth forehead.

The distance between the two was so close that Ye Zi’s reason quickly disappeared again at this moment.

His eyes swayed seemingly unconsciously over his lips.

Hare had thin lips, and the color was very light, but the lines were beautiful.

But no matter how nice it was, he’s still a man!

Ye Zi tried to push himself up, but Hare smirked.

In the next moment, he was pulled down by the collar…

This time, Ye Zi didn’t struggle, he didn’t avoid it. After only five minutes of kissing, he began taking a more active position.

Only because Hare was calling out to his name softly in between their kisses.

So, in the interlacing of their lips, their gasps, and the cries of the cicadas, the poem seemed to ring in his ears, over and over again, soothing all the irritation and anxiety in his heart.

By the power of a word,

I start my life over,

I was born to know you,

To call your name.

Notes:

[1]Paul Éluard’s Liberté. The final paragraph before the finale is written by the author and not from Paul Éluard’s poem, so I’ve translated everything based on the original poem except for that one which I translated from the Chinese. I only know basic French so if I’m wrong you can beat me up. They’re only random chunks from the poem btw not the whole thing.
