chapter 31

The school sports meet was considered the most extravagant mass event apart from the inter-school basketball tournament in the year, and was more popular compared to various art programs due to students being able to eat, drink, play, shout as well as run all around the field. It was even more popular this year as the third years, who had already been cut off from all sorts of activities, were able to participate in the sports meet.

“Are we still missing anything?” Jiang Lei turns to sprawl across Huo Ran’s table and scribble on a piece of paper, “Let’s get them all down, I’ll get my mom to bring them over all at once.”

This was a list with all sorts of food they wanted to eat during the sports meet on it, those that weren’t available in the school’s mini mart and were too far away if they were to go out to buy them.

It was actually mainly barbecue.

The cafeteria did not provide supper during the course of the sports meet, so they wouldn’t have roast to eat.

They could only have it roasted and brought to the school, and had to bring it to the cafeteria to be processed additionally when they wanted to eat.

It so happened that Jiang Lei’s mother needed to come over to the school’s district for an errand, so they decided to have Mama Jiang go to the best roast store in his housing district to bring some over.

“Do it this way,” Xu Zhifan says, “Just tell your mom directly to move the whole roast stand over.”

“Can you be a little more practical and give some more feasible suggestions,” Jiang Lei says.

“I suggested some earlier; don’t need to write them one by one because you won’t be able to finish getting them down. Other than veggies, as long as it’s meat, twenty of each,” Xu Zhifan grasps his fingers to count after he finishes speaking, “Seven of us, including those that tag along…”

“That’s enough,” Huo Ran says, “That’s already a few large bags, if it’s too eye-catching they’ll definitely get snatched, one by one, since they’d already be jealous, with there not being roast in the cafeteria.”

“Alright then,” Jiang Lei nods, “I’ll just say it like that.”

“When the time comes calculate the cost, we’ll pay you after we split it,” Xu Zhifan says.

“Split my ass,” Kou Chen was sprawled out on his own desk, “I said that I’ll treat.”

“You can buy drinks,” Xu Zhifan says, “My first time seeing someone addicted to treating, the treats never ending.”

“Are you guys blissful?” Kou Chen grins.

“We’re blissful,” Huo Ran says, “Even Zhou Haichao and Liu Yu are blissful.”

“Get lost,” Kou Chen makes a ‘tsk’ sound, “I’ve already gotten that money back.”

“When did you get it back?” Wei Chaoren says, “They’d return it?”

“The school found out about it, there’s no way they wouldn’t make them pay it back,” Xu Chuan says, “But I reckon Kou Chen hadn’t wanted it.”

“That’s right,” Kou Chen reaches a hand in front of him and snaps his fingers, “Split half of it to the class fund and Old Yuan’s holding on to the other half, in case I starve to death.”

“The class outfits are about done aren’t they?” Hu Yi asks, “When they were asking for opinions they didn’t even ask the boys, it was all decided directly by the girls. They only got us to provide our measurements.”

“Wasn’t it just not trusting the boys’ aesthetic sense,” Xu Chuan says.

Although their aesthetic senses had not been trusted by the girls, while Huo Ran and the group were cleaning the cafeteria after dinner, Wu Xiaochen and two girls came over bringing a bag.

“Huo Ran,” she walks up to Huo Ran and speaks quietly, “Are you free?”

“Mn?” Huo Ran was currently industriously wiping the table, tilting his head and responding.

Wu Xiaochen aside, these two girls had been in the same class as him before, so he was able to remember their names: Tang Wei and Li Yiyi.

“The boys’ class outfit, how about you help to try it on,” Wu Xiaochen says, “See how it looks.”

“I… no,” Huo Ran hesitates for two seconds before rejecting. As soon as he thought about the way a few girls would be surrounding him, pointing at him and sizing him up after he changed into the class outfit, he felt it was impossibly awkward.

“Ah, why though,” Tang Wei was stunned, “Do you not have time?”

“Not that,” Huo Ran thinks a little, then sees Kou Chen up ahead who was dragging a mop and busying himself with mopping. He points to where he is, “Look for him maybe.”

“…Kou Chen huh,” Wu Xiaochen was a little hesitant, and the three girls look at each other.

“What’s wrong?” Huo Ran says, “Kou Chen’s physique is so good, isn’t he suitable for checking how it looks?”

Wu Xiaochen’s group doesn’t speak, first exchanging looks, then smiling as they watched him for a while. Wu Xiaochen then says softly: “We don’t dare to look for him, we’re scared he’ll be annoyed.”

Although Huo Ran didn’t understand why they’d smiled, in order to reject the fate of being surrounded and observed, he doesn’t hesitate even a little, shouting in that direction: “Kou Chen.”

Kou Chen turns back.

“Help them try out the class outfit, they want to see how it looks,” Huo Ran says.

“Please,” the few girls say to Kou Chen in small voices collectively.

Kou Chen squints his eyes a little, only straightening up after a while: “Right now?”

“Mn, is that okay?” Wu Xiaochen asks.

“Sure,” Kou Chen doesn’t say much either, leaning the mop onto the wall, “Here?”

“In the classroom,” Wu Xiaochen says.

“Are you guys selling tickets after?” Kou Chen says, “How many people are there in the classroom, you’ve earned quite a bit.”

Wu Xiaochen laughs for half a day: “Why don’t we do it here then, ask auntie if we can borrow their changing room.”

“Yiyi! Zhang Yiyi!” Kou Chen doesn’t say anything else, shouting towards the kitchen. He walks this way and removes his jacket, putting it in Huo Ran’s hands.

“What is it?” Auntie Zhang asks.

“Is there anyone in the changing room? I’ll use it for a bit,” Kou Chen says.

“There’s no one, go ahead,” Auntie Zhang says.

Kou Chen doesn’t wait for Wu Xiaochen to make a move, bending slightly at the waist and taking the bag containing the outfit from her hands, then walking over towards the changing room.

“My godddd,” Li Yiyi says, “Too cool.”

“Exactlyyyy,” Tang Wei says, “Have you guys seen the back of his waist? It’s even cooler.”

“No,” Li Yiyi sighs, “I heard he has an exceptionally cool murderer tattooed on the back of his waist.”

“Death god,” Wu Xiaochen says, “What murderer, it holds a sickle…”

“You’ve seen it?” Li Yiyi asks immediately.

“No,” Wu Xiaochen expressed great regret, “I was dieting that day and didn’t come to eat, so I missed it.”

“You diet according to the day?” Huo Ran couldn’t resist asking.

“Yeah,” Wu Xiaochen’s group laugh for half a day, “Huo Ran why are you so good at picking out the main point?”

“What should the main point have been,” Huo Ran asks, “The death god?”

“You’ve seen it haven’t you!” Tang Wei asks.

Regarding this, aren’t you looking down on me.

Not only have I seen it, I’ve even seen it in it’s entirety, and not only have I seen it in it’s entirety, I’ve even fucking smacked it…

“Mn,” Huo Ran clears his throat.

“I want to see it too…” Tang Wei sighs very exaggeratedly.

“Watch yourself a little! How are you so unrestrained!” Wu Xiaochen laughs as she speaks.

Kou Chen actually changed his clothes rather quickly, walking out within a few minutes and fixing himself up as he walked.

“Oh my god,” Li Yiyi looks at him.

“Too handsome,” Tang Wei says, “It fits way too well.”

Huo Ran doesn’t say anything; he’d only raised an eyebrow serenely when Kou Chen had walked out.

Although he couldn’t understand why the class outfit had to be street fashion, with a loose hoodie to match shorts, and having the hood on instantly giving a ‘stepping on a skateboard and lifting off’ feeling, he had to say that Kou Chen was indeed pretty hot with this outfit on.

“Why did it get made into this?” Kou Chen walks over and stands, putting the hood on and covering half his face.

“The other classes made theirs into especially youthful and cute ones, with even COS and stuff,” Wu Xiaochen says, “We brainstormed for a long time: to grab people’s attention amidst a patch of dazzle, we had to be the bit of cool in the sea of flowers.”

“At the start we wanted to do western-style clothes,” Li Yiyi says, “Old Yuan said the chances to wear those are too few and that we should prioritise practicality, so we got these, which can be worn normally.”

“Mn,” Huo Ran nods.

“Youth is me!” Tang Wei gives a wave of her hand, “I’m the most outstanding!”

“Hoist the sails, cleave through the waves!” Li Yiyi too, waves her hand, “Nobody stop me!”

Huo Ran gives the two of them a round of applause.

“Is it alright?” Kou Chen asks.

“It’s more than alright, thanks,” Wu Xiaochen grins as she speaks, “There aren’t any chubbies amongst the boys in our class, the physiques are pretty well-balanced, so none of you would look bad wearing this outfit probably.”

“What are the girls wearing?” Kou Chen asks.

“Hoodies of the same style but of different colors,” Wu Xiaochen says, “The shorts are a little shorter.”

“Won’t your legs freeze?” Kou Chen lowers his head for a look, “It’s already November, jiejie.”

“We have leggings,” Li Yiyi says.

“…Oh,” Kou Chen says, “And we won’t have them?”

“Boys bear with it a little, wear more on your upper bodies, you can change the pants after lining up,” Wu Xiaochen says, “We’ve arranged logistics to hand pants out to everyone.”

Huo Ran couldn’t help but laugh: “You guys are really thorough huh.”

There were more people than usual in the infirmary before the sports meet, when the group of them skipped night self-study to go to the infirmary to chat, there were two boys in there because they’d been training for hundred-meters on the field: one had twisted his ankle and the other had scraped his knee.

However, there was only the elder Doctor Liu in the infirmary that day.

“Where’s Doctor Tao?” Xu Zhifan asks, “Wasn’t she on-shift today? I saw her before I ate dinner.”

“Something cropped up and she left, around ten minutes ago, it was almost time to get off work anyway,” Doctor Liu says, “Do you have any business with her?”

“It’s alright,” Xu Zhifan says.

The group of them retreat out of the infirmary, standing under a tree next to the school gate.

“Someone’s disappointed,” Jiang Lei says.

“And not just one person,” Wei Chaoren says.

“What cropped up though, couldn’t even wait to get off work?” Xu Chuan says.

“Eat supper or go back to the classroom?” Kou Chen asks.

“Eat,” the group of them answer in unison.

Right as they were turning to go back the way they’d come, someone walked in from the school gate.

It was already this late, there pretty much wouldn’t be anyone else entering the school and the small gate that pedestrians went through was already shut, so they watched rather curiously.

The school infirmary was not far from the main gate, and very soon, they saw exactly who it was that had entered.

“Fuck,” Xu Chuan says, “Isn’t this the ex-boyfriend?”

“Whose?” Wei Chaoren asks immediately.

“Mine,” Xu Chuan keeps his eyes on that side, “Whose else could it be, it’s Tao Rui’s ex-boyfriend!”

As soon as he said this, the group of them all identified him; after all, they’d gotten up close and personal with this person the other day.

“What’s he here for?” Huo Ran says, “Tao Rui left precisely because he was coming didn’t she?”

“Definitely,” Xu Zhifan says.

The group stood by the entrance to the infirmary, a few meters away, in case the ex-boyfriend was up to something.

However, the ex-boyfriend only walked in, spoke a couple lines to Doctor Liu, likely asking after Tao Rui, before turning and walking out.

As soon as he came out, he came face-to-face with the group of them.

The ex-boyfriend was first stunned, then recognised them very quickly, staring at them for a while but not speaking.

“I’ve warned you before,” Kou Chen starts.

Huo Ran especially admired this trait of Kou Chen’s, that was, when he acted cool and vicious. He could always manipulate the volume and color of his voice very well; just by hearing his voice, his aura was already at full blast.

Not sure whether he had practiced it secretly at home…

The ex-boyfriend still did not speak, staying silent for a few seconds before walking towards the school gate.

“Fuck, is he sticky candy!” Jiang Lei laments, “You can’t feel any deep feelings or reluctance to part or what not anymore, this is terrifying.”

“If I got to this level,” Xu Zhifan says, “I’d have to die from embarrassment.”

Tao Rui took leave and did not come to work over the next few days.

“We should’ve added her on Wechat before,” Xu Chuan was sprawled out on his desk, “This is great, being unable to get hold of the person when we want to ask about the situation.”

“There’s her number,” Xu Zhifan says, “We’ll probably get it if we ask Doctor Liu, but it’s not too appropriate.”

“We can only wait,” Xu Chuan says, “Tao Rui’s eyes are pretty big but she’s actually of this level of blindness, having dated such an ex.”

“Huo Ran,” the sports committee member walks over, interrupting their lamenting, “Tell me the name-list for our class’ male team for the basketball match, I’ll report it when the time comes.”

“Huo Ran, Kou Chen,” Huo Ran says, “Wei Chaoren…”

He gets stuck after these three, looking in his surroundings, then thinks a little: “Wait.”

“What?” the sports committee member was stunned.

“Kou Chen…” Huo Ran wanted to repeat it once.

“Mn?” Kou Chen responds very quickly from an aisle away.

“I didn’t call you,” Huo Ran says, continuing to speak to the sports committee member, “Huo Ran, Kou Chen…”

“And you say you hadn’t called me?” Kou Chen says.

“Don’t stir up trouble!” Huo Ran glares at him.

“Just write all the names of the boys that are taller than 1.7-1.8 meters in our class, there aren’t that many anyways,” Kou Chen says, “We’ve played together during our usual PE class, we can consider that being able to coordinate probably.”

Huo Ran looks at the sports committee member.

“Just like that?” the sports committee member asks.

“Huo Ran, Kou Chen, Wei Chaoren, Jiang Lei, and you,” Huo Ran says, “These five are the starting line-up, you can write whoever for the rest, just enough to change members will be fine.”

“Alright,” the sports committee member nods and walks off.

The school sports meet was a more depressing issue for humanities classes, especially boys.

Huo Ran originally hadn’t wanted to sign up for any events, but ended up having been dragged into signing up for a number: 100 meters, high jump and relay.

“Yours are still alright,” Kou Chen says, “I have a thousand-meters, Old Yuan was crying to me and saying nobody signed up.”

“Why was he crying to you?” Huo Ran asks.

“Because I, am that type at one glance,” Kou Chen says, “A person that can go for all the events.”

“…What else did you sign up for?” Huo Ran asks serenely.

“Triple jump, 400 meters,” Kou Chen says, “And relay.”

Huo Ran was dumbfounded: “Can you manage the running? 400 and 1000 are on the same day!”

“As long as they don’t start at the same time,” Kou Chen lifts the corner of his mouth, “There’s no problem.”

“Fuck,” Huo Ran turns away.

When it comes to fronting, if Kou Chen says he’s second, nobody dares to claim to be first.

“You have to cheer me on when the time comes okay,” Kou Chen says, “Also take a few pictures of me breasting the tape.”

“You sure you can get first?” Huo Ran says, “What if when you dash there’s someone in front, what will you do?”

“Impossible,” Kou Chen says.

“Yes, impossible,” Huo Ran nods, “If there is, I’ll help you smack them all down.”

Kou Chen starts laughing, reaching a hand out to pinch his cheek: “Why are you so fun.”

Huo Ran smacks his hand away: “Scram back to your own seat.”

“No,” Kou Chen glances towards his own seat, “Xu Zhifan’s fallen asleep.”

Huo Ran rips a piece of paper out from a notebook and scrunches it up, hurling it at Xu Zhifan’s face.

“Ai,” Xu Zhifan sits upright at once.

“Self-study,” Xu Chuan next to him speaks up in time, stopping the momentum that would have caused him to stand up directly.

“What do you want?” Xu Zhifan sees the ball of paper, turning his head.

“You…” Huo Ran had yet to finish speaking when clamour sounded from the office area.

There were people shouting, people swearing, and the sound of a mug breaking as it fell to the ground.

It was afternoon self-study, and one that had not been taken up by a teacher. The whole class was drowsy, but this unexpected disturbance instantly startled a number of heads into looking up.

“What’s wrong?” someone asks.

Jiang Lei draws the curtains with a swoosh, and a few people pounce onto the window to look over.

Kou Chen perched on Huo Ran’s body to look, then abruptly turns to run to the classroom door: “Old Yuan!”

Only then did Huo Ran catch a clear glimpse: in the office, someone had pressed Old Yuan onto an office desk and was currently hurling fists, with a few teachers on the side trying to pull them off.

“Fuck,” Huo Ran swears, jumping up and running out of the classroom as well.
