Hi. I decided to ask for my friend’s help (Pinnochies) to post the continuation of the story I translated, here. I had been fiddling with my blog’s settings and menus, but after so long, I still got confused time and again, and I am not a tech savvy person, so I found it’s hard for me to keep learning all of those. So, here I am, posting my translation here with the help of Pinnochies.

If you enjoy this story, please rate it on novelupdate.

For now, I can only update once a week, but hopefully next month, when Pinnochies and I starts to collaborate in translating this story, we can post more per week.

Thank you Pinnochies for helping me, and I want to thank you all for reading this story too! Enjoy!

People come and go in the street.

The peddlers put up their smiles, and were shouting to sell their goods.

There are young children holding up a dough figurine, chasing and quarreling noisily…

All the mortal smoke and heat blew on Jiang Xuening’s face, tainting Jang Xuening’s eyebrows and she slowly relaxed her tense body. Only then did she finally feel that her rebirth is real. It was no longer that kind of dreamy, dark and undifferentiated chaos state when she was facing Shen Jie and Yan Lin before.

Now, she is not an Empress.

There is also no need to always live in the Kunning Palace surrounded by high walls.

Walking on this street, Jiang Xuening feels like a fish returning into the water, even her pace has lightened up.

The Jiang Mansion is in Huaishu[1] alley, and she doesn’t need to go too far. After a while, she saw the vermilion gate.

To be honest, she has no deep feelings for the Jiang Mansion.

After all, she only came back to the capital at the age of fourteen. Before that, she grew up in a country estate in Tong state and was raised by Wan Niang, the concubine of her father, Jiang Boyou.

In her biological mother’s words, she was raised as a waste.

Jiang Xuening’s life experience says a bit about it.

She was originally born by her father’s di[2] wife, Meng shi[3], but when Meng shi was pregnant with her, she was quarreling with Wan Niang.

Wan Niang, a prostitute-to-be from Yangzhou, was given to her father. Later, her status was raised as a concubine. She was favored by her father and was also pregnant.

According to Wanniang, it was the Meng shi who had offended her first and wanted to send her away to the countryside.

Wan Niang is not an easy person to be trifled with either.

Seeing that the fate of her being sent to the country estate in Tong state was already decided, she decided to go all the way. She took advantage of the chaos when she was in labour at the same night with Meng shi and replaced her daughter with Meng shi‘s daughter.

From then on, Wan Niang’s daughter was transformed into the di daughter of the Jiang Mansion. She was dressed in fine clothes and well fed, learned etiquette and was virtuous. She was called Jiang Xuehui.

Meng shi‘s daughter went to the country estate with Wan Niang, does as she pleases in the wild, and she didn’t know the least bit of the established practices of ladies from respectable families.

This unfortunate Meng shi‘s daughter, without a doubt, was Jiang Xuening.

Fortunately, Wan Niang was very nice to her. She taught her how to read and write, and also how to put on makeup and play with fragrance. She didn’t treat her harshly.

Now that Jiang Xuening thinks about it, Wan Niang’s calculations were extremely deep.

Because Wan Niang fell seriously ill four years ago, she wrote a letter directly to the Capital, revealing the truth about the matter of replacing a wild cat for a crown prince.

This time, the entire Jiang Mansion was completely blown up.

After the verification, the Capital sent people to go there.

But Wan Niang didn’t bother to talk nonsense with them. She dropped the sentence ‘it’s too late to regret’ and left a mess behind.

Meng shi hated Wan Niang very much, but Wan Niang indeed didn’t treat her daughter harshly, and still left the sentence ‘it’s too late to regret’, which proved that she had the heart to repent.

She can not argue with a dead person anyway

Even more unable to vent her anger on Jiang Xuehui.

The Jiang Mansion was also a family with status and reputation. It’s not good to make a big fuss when such a scandal happens. Although the eldest girl was born by Wan Niang, she has been raised under Meng shi‘s knee since she was a child. She is dignified and virtuous. She has a mother-daughter relationship with Meng shi, and she has nothing to do with what happened in those years. If they restored her status as a shu daughter, she may be ridiculed and her marriage may be difficult too.

So the whole mansion was summoned from top to bottom, and a compromise was chosen.

That is, to pretend a great master had given Jiang Xuening a fortune telling when she was still young, that she will have a misfortune before she was 14 years old. She had to stay away from bustling places to be able to tide over the crisis, so she was to the village to be raised as an ordinary child.

[1] Huaishu: Pagoda tree. Actually, there’s a real Huaishu alley in Henan, China, and it has been around since the days of the dynasties. Just search 槐树胡同 if you want to know more.

[2] di: legal.

[3] shi: clan. It was usually used behind a married woman’s surname too, as a form of address.
