Chapter 5: A Fateful Encounter

The first thing that caught her eye was a necklace, something that had always hung around the original owner's neck since childhood. It wasn't a valuable item; it was a peach wood charm with a brown pendant that looked like jade or stone hanging below it.

According to the story, this was the item the original owner was wearing when the adoptive parents found her. Judging by the setup, it seemed she wasn't particularly favored by her biological parents.

The only possible use of the peach wood charm was that it had her birth date carved on the back, which felt somewhat ironic, as if they knew she would be abandoned.

She felt that being an orphan was just fine, and she had no intention of searching for her biological family. She didn't want to bring a bunch of ancestors into her life.

Below the box were two property deeds, one for this house and the other for the adoptive mother, Ding Zhilan.

The house under the adoptive mother's name was rented to the government, and the rent was previously sent to Ding Zhilan. After the adoptive mother's sacrifice, the grandfather changed the recipient to the original owner.

Thinking about going to the countryside, she needed to go there before leaving to explain the situation.

Just as she was thinking about it, someone knocked on the door: "Yunyi, open the door."

Recognizing the voice, she knew who it was. She hadn't even gone to settle accounts with them, but they had come to her first.

Perhaps it was the residual consciousness of the original owner, but a surge of anger rose in her heart.

She stood up quickly, but the force was too strong, and her hand grazed the sharp corner of the open secret compartment, immediately cutting a wound and causing blood to seep out.

Thinking that the Sun family must have come for the property in front of her, she didn't bother to tend to the bleeding wound and quickly put the property deeds back into the box.

Just as she was about to throw the worthless necklace back into the box, a drop of blood from her wound fell onto the brown pendant.

Yunyi was about to find something to wipe it off, but a different scene appeared in her mind.

Having experienced a "cheat" before, she knew exactly what this meant.

She was both surprised and delighted, yet somewhat disbelieving.

However, it wasn't the right time to investigate, as a new round of knocking came from outside.

She quickly treated her hand, put everything back into the secret compartment, and then went out to the courtyard: "I'm coming."

As soon as the door opened, Sun Mother's fawning face was revealed: "Yunyi, why did it take so long to open the door?"

Yunyi had no intention of letting her in: "Aunt Sun, what's the matter?"

Sun Mother glanced at the neighbors peeking over, and smiled awkwardly: "Auntie was just worried you might be lonely, so I thought I'd come over to keep you company."

Yunyi didn't want to waste words with her: "No need, I'm a bit tired and want to rest."

The phrase "want to rest" effectively blocked any further words from Sun Mother. She cursed Yunyi in her heart but still maintained a smile: "Then you rest first. Although your grandfather is gone, we're still here for you. Don't worry."

Yunyi, not the original owner, spoke directly: "I have nothing to worry about. My grandfather has arranged everything for me, so there's no need for you to trouble yourself."

She didn't say anything too harsh to avoid disrupting her revenge plan.

Without waiting for Sun Mother to say anything else: "If there's nothing else, I'll go rest now."

She nodded to the other neighbors outside and then closed the door.

No one was a fool; the Sun family's intentions were clear to the neighbors—they wanted to take everything.

But thinking about the recently buried Old Master Chu and Yunyi's attitude, everyone could understand.
