Chapter 1: Because of Love

Wen Cheng didn’t think that his life would end in such a way.

He looked down at the dagger in his chest before turning unbelieving eyes back to the expressionless man standing before him.

“…” Why… the sharp pain already made him unable to speak. Wen Cheng looked at Yu Linfei’s blank expression, feeling the strength in his entire body rapidly disappearing…

“You make me sick.” Cold fingers caressed Wen Cheng’s lips as a graceful smile appeared on Yu Linfei’s face. “Hurry up and drop dead.”

….Yu Linfei…killed him… This realization made Wen Cheng’s whole person stagnate. His eyes showed despair as he looked at Yu Linfei’s smile, and he felt that he couldn’t say anything more.

Why!!! Falling to the ground, Wen Cheng’s eyes became more and more blurred until tears finally flowed down his cheeks. Anyone else would be fine… but why… why did he die at Yu Linfei’s hands?

What was the relationship between Wen Cheng and Yu Linfei?

Anyone who knew both of them knew… Wen Cheng and Yu Linfei were the most devoted partners, the most caring of each other – the most loving couple.

Did the elegant and gentle Yu Linfei love Wen Cheng or not? If you asked this question, you’d be ridiculed – Yu Linfei, as everyone knew, put Wen Cheng at the bottom tip of his heart and loved him dearly.

No matter how busy he was, no matter how tired he was, he would always set aside time for Wen Cheng. He could not eat for a full day, but would still worry about whether or not Wen Cheng was full. If he wanted a midnight snack, then he’d stay up all night in order to rush back and see Wen Cheng. Yu Linfei spent three years spoiling Wen Cheng up to the heavens.

Everyone, including Wen Cheng, believed in Yu Linfei’s love for him. Perhaps when he was first with Yu Linfei, he’d wondered if this man was after status or his power. Later though, Yu Linfei used his own actions to resolve Wen Cheng’s doubts.

Then, after completely gaining Wen Cheng’s trust… Yu Linfei smiled and stabbed the dagger in his hands into his lover’s chest.

His smile was still so elegant. There was even a trace of shyness on his handsome face just as Wen Cheng liked; he had the heroic spirit of a man but retained his youthfulness.

‘What a perfect man,’ thought Wen Cheng, about to lose consciousness. He actually played the part of his lover for three years, constructing a picture for him… an intoxicating dream that he didn’t want to wake from.

A large amount of blood flowed from his chest. Wen Cheng lay on the cold floor, the dim gaze fixed on the ceiling even as they lost focus. His white shirt was dyed red by blood, the clock slowly rang at midnight, and Wen Cheng closed his eyes.

On the first day of winter in 2012, he was killed by his lover.

In the cold winter, large flakes of snow fell from the sky like feathers.

The streets were devoid of pedestrians in the evening. Except for the traffic and the warm lights from the windows in the residential area, there was almost no feeling of human life.

It was on such a day that Wen Cheng woke up.

Opening his eyes blearily, all he saw was white. The weakness in his body made it difficult to see what was before him for a moment. He moved his body carefully… and felt something fluffy.

Fluffy? His eyes widened suddenly, and found in front of him a big… cat face.

What a big cat!! The hair all over his body stood up, and Wen Cheng couldn’t help but cry out, “Meow!!!”

Wen Cheng was stunned… what was that sound just now?

There was a trace of doubt on the huge cat’s face. The snow-white cat looked at the kitten who’d just woken up, stretched out her tongue, and began to lick the foolish looking kitten.

“… Meow.” Wen Cheng stiffly emitted this sound. He must be hallucinating!!! Why did he find himself changed into a black cat!!!

“Meow.” The big cat pressed her head against Wen Cheng before laying down on her side. She looked at her child encouragingly as she exposed her belly.

…The pink belly.

Wen Cheng suddenly understood.

“Meow?” Seeing that Wen Cheng still refused to move, the mother cat was seemingly provoked. She patted Wen Cheng’s head lightly with her paws, apparently blaming Wen Cheng for not feeding.

“…” Wen Cheng moved step by step, stupefied.

The warm milk made Wen Cheng’s entire body feel warm. He drank the mother cat’s milk, but there was something in his head that couldn’t be changed…

If he wasn’t crazy… he remembered that he was killed by Yu Linfei… and then what?

Then he became a newborn kitten, still drinking his mother’s milk… Would the world dare to get a little crazier…?”

Soon full, Wen Cheng wiped his mouth as a conditioned reflex and licked his own plush paws, making a soft sound, “Meow…”

“Meow~.” The mother cat looked at Wen Cheng with satisfaction and began to clean his body with her tongue. Though there were barbs on the cat’s tongue, he didn’t feel uncomfortable from the licking. It was actually very comfortable. Wen Cheng was licked from head to toe by the mother cat before she finally cleaned his face.

If Wen Cheng was a person at this time, his face would be as black as the bottom of a pot. Just when his face was all twisted up, a claw stretched out from somewhere and hooked his tail.

“Meow!!!” The cat’s whole body jumped up instantly, Wen Cheng reflexively clawing back.

“Wu~” With a tiny whimper, Wen Cheng turned around and saw a little yellow cat about the same size as him. His fluffy face had an eager expression on it… he obviously wanted Wen Cheng to play with him.

Wen Cheng happily replied –– That was impossible!!

How could he accept the cruel fact that he’d suddenly become a cat in such a short time? Wen Cheng lazily raised his eyes to look at the little yellow ball of fluff (1), smacked his lips a couple times, and laid down beside the mother cat… he had to think about what was happening.

“Meowu.” (2) Seeing Wen Cheng ignoring him, the little yellow cat was obviously unhappy. He circled Wen Cheng several times, meowing constantly. It was like he was inviting Wen Cheng to go play with him.

Wen Cheng looked at the little yellow fluff and immediately thought of an important question. He took a deep breath and lifted himself up… then turned back around again.

Thank goodness!! Seeing the truth, Wen Cheng let out a whimper… Fortunately, his gender didn’t change with the species…

If he became a female cat, he’d probably go straight to death and be reborn again.

“Meow!!!” Wen Cheng let out a pained scream as he was pulled from his mental journey. He found that the little yellow cat behind him had bit his tail while he was thinking about these messy things!

Although a kitten’s teeth while still drinking milk didn’t have much attack power, the tail was really very sensitive. After being bitten by the little yellow cat, Wen Cheng almost directly jumped off the ground!

“Meow meow meow meow! (Don’t bite my tail!!! Quickly let go! Ah hey, I’m talking to you!)” Wen Cheng was very angry with the little yellow cat.

“Meow… (Who told you not to play with me…)” Strangely, Wen Cheng actually understood the meaning of “meow” from the little yellow cat.

“I won’t play with you!!” We Cheng saved his wet tail from the mouth of the little yellow cat, feeling even more disdainful. He snorted and burrowed his body underneath the belly of the mother cat.

“… You’re a bad cat.” There was a crying sound in his meows. The yellow cat looked sadly at Wen Cheng hiding under the mother cat. “I won’t play with you next time.”

“…” I don’t care. Wen Cheng’s face was expressionless.

“Hmph, I won’t leave you any dried fish,” Seeing that Wen Cheng wasn’t intimidated, the little yellow cat continued.

“…” I don’t give a shit. Wen Cheng was still expressionless.

“… I don’t give toys to weird cats!!” The little yellow cat was about to cry. (3)

“…” Wen Cheng had a strange guilty feeling.

“Or mother’s milk!!!” Very irritated by Wen Cheng’s indifference, the little yellow cat said angrily, “The best place to drink in the future will be mine!!”

“… How to play,” Wen Cheng asked weakly.

“Meow~ You chase me~~” The little yellow cat was very happy, the little black cat had finally paid attention to him.

“… Let’s play hide and seek.” Wen Cheng slowly wiped away the black lines on his face with his paws, looking helplessly at the small yellow cat’s vigorous spirit. “You hide and I’ll find you.”

“Good good~” The little yellow cat was happy. “Come find me quickly~~”

The little yellow cat happily ran away.

Then… Wen Cheng silently got under the mama cat’s belly.

… The most pitiful game of hide-and-seek in the world was when the people who were hiding were still having fun while the people catching had already gone home to eat.

He drove away the noisy little yellow cat using despicable means. Wen Cheng found a comfortable position and started to look around. It seemed that the people who raised them were well-off. They had special cat beds and high-quality cat food and the kitty litter didn’t look cheap. Although Wen Cheng had never raised a cat, he could still see from his mother’s appearance that they weren’t ordinary mixed-race hybrid cats, but instead seemed to have some special bloodline.

This long hair… should be a Persian cat? Wen Cheng thought that being killed and turned into a cat… this experience was really too tough.

Translator Notes: Welcome to my new project! I really really love this novel, so I hope you guys enjoy it as well. Also, please welcome my two lovely editors, redyak and Aylik! These two will be helping make my updates more polished and coherent, so thank you guys so much!

On another note, because my editors were wondering, I found that it is late in 2012 in about November, as opposed to the first day of 2012 lmao.

“小黄毛”, more literally something like “little yellow-hair”. I considered “little yellow hairball” but that sounded a little too mean haha.“Meowu” is a mixture of meow (miao) and wu, the sound for crying. Think of it as a very emotional meow. This sentence was “……逗猫棒我也不给泥!!” I’m not sure what the mud (ni) is referring to. I’d say kitty litter but they directly call it kitty litter usually…so I’ve kind of guesstimated. Let me know if you know a proper translation for it!
