Chapter 2: The Owner

Wen Cheng spent a long time thinking about why Yu Linfei killed him.

Even though it had already happened, even if Wen Cheng was the victim, he still couldn’t believe that Yu Linfei killed him.

Was all the love and gentleness a lie? Wen Cheng swung his tail in a low mood. He could now clearly recall the pain of the dagger piercing his chest.

There was the feeling that his whole body was gradually getting colder, with black spots covering his vision as it became increasingly difficult to breathe…

Wen Cheng suddenly shuddered, remembering Yu Linfei’s eyes when he had killed him.

Unlike the past loneliness and tenderness, Wen Cheng could see a kind of apathy in his eyes, a loathing that had been carved into his bones.

If Wen Cheng had only seen those eyes… he would’ve never believed that the person who killed him was his lover, Yu Linfei.

But even if he didn’t want to believe, the fact wouldn’t change that the one who killed him was none other than Yu Linfei.

Okay… he was killed by Yu Linfei, but who could explain the current situation to him?? Did he forget to drink the Meng Po soup (1) and reincarnate into a cat with only human memories?? Dare to dig a bigger pit?? (2) With tears of blood across his face, Wen Cheng wiped his face with his fluffy paws.

But before he finished hurting grievous spring and autumn, he found that his troubles returned. (3)

“You lied to me, lied to me, lied to me.” The little yellow-haired kitten discovered Wen Cheng’s plot, and stared with watery blue eyes as his hair completely exploded. “Bad little black!!!”

“…” Wen Cheng reached out his paw and touched the little yellow cat’s head.

“Don’t touch my head!” The little yellow cat sat beside the reclining Wen Cheng, filled with righteous indignation. “You lied to me!!!”

“How did I lie to you?” Wen Cheng asked calmly.

“You tricked me into hiding!! You didn’t come find me!!” The little yellow cat yelled meow, meow, meow. It seemed that if Wen Cheng kept teasing him, he wouldn’t be far from crying…

“I didn’t,” Wen Cheng explained. “I was looking for you for a long time, but I couldn’t find you, so I just came back…”

“Really?” The little yellow cat asked seriously. “Good cats don’t lie.”

“Really,” Wen Cheng replied firmly… he wasn’t a cat after all.

“Meow.” He accepted Wen Cheng’s explanation very happily. The little yellow cat began to joyfully lick Wen Cheng’s face. “Then you found me… It’s my turn to find you now~~~”

… They were still playing? Wen Cheng’s face stiffened.

“Quickly go, quickly go~,” the little yellow cat said joyfully, “Hurry up~~”

“…” Wen Cheng wept silently.

It seemed that if he didn’t play with this little yellow cat today, he really couldn’t rest… With this understanding, Wen Cheng reluctantly moved his feet and slowly walked towards the living room.

“Eh, Second Fluff (4), why did you come to the living room?” Before Wen Cheng could react, he found a hand descending from the sky to pick him up.

“Meow!” Being firmly held in someone’s arms, Wen Cheng looked up at the person who’d suddenly appeared.

“Second Fluff, Second Fluff~” He stroked Wen Cheng back with one hand and held the very small Wen Cheng with his other hand. The young man’s face was very happy. “Come meow for me~ Call your gege~.”

… Call your sister! Wen Cheng looked at the strange man in front of him, blue veins appearing on his forehead. Who could tell him what kind of name Second Fluff was!!! Why did he call such a strange name… even Little Black would be more powerful than Second Fluff!!!

The man who picked up Wen Cheng didn’t know that the inner core of his cat had been changed. He intimately kissed Second Fluff’s nose and smiled. “Don’t you hate to go out? Why are you throwing yourself out now?”

“Meow.” Wen Cheng looked dead.

“Eldest Fluff was sent away, are you unhappy?” Holding Wen Cheng’s forelimbs, he raised him up in front of him. He showed a slightly distressed expression. “Second Fluff, you’ll be sent away too in a few days… When Second Fluff is separated from his mother and Bun, will he be even more unhappy?” (5)

… Huh? Bun? Wen Cheng was stunned… and immediately thought… why isn’t my brother Third Fluff? Was this the legend of “Li Jing gave birth to three sons, the first one was Jin Zha, the second one was Mu Zha, and the third one was Li Ergou…” One Hundred Thousand Bad Jokes… (6)

“Come on, your gege will take you to eat delicious food.” Looking at the dull face of his cat, He Yi smiled helplessly… Although it was said that the breed of chinchilla cats were quite stupid, he’d never seen such a dumb one…

“Meow.” Wen Cheng silently lay in He Yi’s arms and let him pet his fur… Even though it was quite awkward to be a cat… this petting fur thing… was really comfortable ah ah ah~~~ A little more force~~ Ah, right there…

He didn’t realize that he’d completely lost all of his self-discipline. Wen Cheng lifted his chin happily, wanting his owner to scratch there…

“Haha…” Seeing Second Fluff (Wen Cheng: …) act so spoiled, He Yi’s smile was even brighter. He particularly liked animals like cats. Although they weren’t as sticky as dogs, they had all kinds of different coquettish and meng selling techniques. Even if they did something wrong… just staring into those watery eyes would make you unwilling to even scold them.

He Yi raised a female silver-haired chinchilla cat named Fei Er, whose personality was very gentle. She enjoyed being close to humans and loved to be clean. Since He Yi bought her, he loved Fei Er as much as he’d love his own daughter.

That year, Fei Er gave birth to three kittens for the first time. One was black and white, one was gold and white… and there was also a pure black one.

Pure black… He Yi looked at the Second Fluff held in his arms and felt a little helpless. Fei Er’s blood was very pure, and the only one he bred her with was also a chinchilla cat, so He Yi still couldn’t understand… Why did Second Fluff’s color turn out like this? Was it a variation? Forget it… there wasn’t anything bad about black… it was quite cute.

“Here, Second Fluff, dried fish.” Tearing up the wrapper, He Yi took out a small dried fish and shook it in front of the kitten.

“Eh?” It was somewhat strange that Second Fluff didn’t grab the dried fish as eagerly as usual. He Yi patted his pet’s head. “Why aren’t you eating?” Could he be sick?

… How could He Yi know the struggle in Wen Cheng’s heart… He held his breath and looked with golden eyes at the dried fish that was slowly swaying… very conflicted… It was reasonable to say that he should firmly resist such insults to his person!! But that dried fish really looked delicious… It wouldn’t matter if he took just a little bite… just a bite… “Aowu.”

Then he took a decisive bite.

When Wen Cheng pulled the dried fish into his mouth, he felt pink bubbles come out all over his body. He crunched the delicious dried fish, and without hesitation, turned his eyes to the small bag that the man was holding.

“Hahaha…” Looking at Wen Cheng’s sparkling eyes, He Yi couldn’t help but laugh in a good mood. He took out another small dried fish and handed it to Wen Cheng again.

“Meow~” He ate the dried fish again and began to lick the fingers that held the smell of the fish…

“Don’t lick, there’s more.” Finally, He Yi felt that his kitten had regained its vitality. “After eating this bag there’ll be no more. Kittens can’t eat too much or it’ll hurt your tummy…”

Wen Cheng didn’t care too much as he happily finished eating a packet of dried fish… Suddenly, his mood fell to the very bottom of the valley… Was the cat with the salted fish in its mouth trying to please that man really him?!! No, it was impossible!!! Why did he become a cat, he couldn’t control himself at all! It was just a little packet of fish… well… little dried fish… were delicious…(﹃)

“Oh, don’t act coquettish with me, you can’t eat anymore.” Looking at the twinkling stars in Wen Cheng’s eyes, He Yi couldn’t bear to knock him down. “When Second Fluff grows up, I will buy you a lot of dried fish to eat. So when you’re sent to my ge Yu Linfei, you must eat good meals. Otherwise you won’t grow up and there will be no dried fish to eat!”

Hmm… only when he grew up could he eat dried fish… Wait!! As if he had just now heard the key words, Wen Cheng suddenly opened his eyes and looked at the man in front of him in shock. “Meow?”

“What’s the matter?” He Yi looked at Wen Cheng and said, “My ge Yu Linfei is very good, but when Second Fluff gets there, he can’t be as naughty as he is at home or he’ll be spanked!”

… Was he hallucinating? Wen Cheng thought sluggishly…Yu Linfei… ge? New owner… sent to… what?? Finally, the slowed-down Wen Cheng’s fur instantly exploded (7). He jumped directly from He Yi’s body with a meow, stumbling back to his cat bed!

He was going to be given to Yu Linfei!!! This realization made Wen Cheng’s hair stand on end…was this his life?? Even after dying and becoming a cat, he couldn’t escape from Yu Linfei???

“Second Fluff!” He Yi was frightened by Wen Cheng’s action. Rushing over, He Yi found Wen Cheng burying his head under the mama cat’s stomach, looking scared.

… He couldn’t understand him, could he? This thought suddenly popped up in his head. He Yi looked at the sleeping Fei Er and Second Fluff beside her, asking, “Second Fluff… don’t you want to go to your new owner?”

“Meow meow!!!” Hearing He Yi’s words, Wen Cheng quickly poked out his head and meowed urgently.

… Can he really understand me?? He looked at Wen Cheng’s appearance and widened his eyes in surprise. “Second Fluff, can you understand what I’m saying?”

… Crap. Wen Cheng dropped his head feebly.

“All right, all right.” Looking at the listless appearance of his family’s Second Fluff and instantly feeling hurt. He picked up Wen Cheng and comforted him, “Let’s send Bun instead of Second Fluff, okay?”

“Meow…” Wen Cheng wanted to wag his tail to show his joy.

… What a strange cat. After touching Second Fluff’s back, He Yi thought that he shouldn’t have found an owner for this kitten so quickly.

Translator Notes: He Yi is a good boy. A chinchilla cat is a breed that is named after the rodent. They’re an offshoot of Persian cats and are usually pure white, with slightly smushed faces and very long fur.

Here’s a normal white chinchilla cat:

And here’s what Wen Cheng miiiiight look like:

Thank you to Aylik for editing!

1. Meng Po soup refers to the soup the Old Lady Meng serves to souls in the underworld on the Bridge of Forgetfulness. The soup wipes their memories so they can have a clean slate when they reincarnate.

2. A pit is slang referring to lying and deception, digging a pit is the act of lying and deceiving in this context.

3. “伤春悲秋” Ugh, I’m sure there’s a better way to translate this, but I’m not sure. Idiom that often refers to extreme sentimentality. Comes from an old poem and means sadness at the changing of seasons and scenery.

4. “Er mao” is the name for him, and could mean a few different things, but in this context “er” would mean 2 and “mao” is directly something like hair or fur. It’s commonly used to refer to elderly people too though.

5. “Eldest fluff” or “Da mao” could’ve also been big fluff but I thought eldest was funnier. “Bun” is “baozi”, the common kind of steamed bun usually stuffed with meat, commonly just called bao.

6. Two things to explain! First, One Hundred Thousand Bad Jokes is an animated comedy series that did a bit based off of the story of Li Jing. The actual mythological story should be very roughly something like this: Li Jing wanted to have 5 sons within 10 years and name them after the 5 elements. He succeeded with the first 2, metal and wood, but his wife didn’t have the third baby soon enough and ruined the plan, so the third son’s name was different. In the original legend his name is Ne Zha, but the animated series used a different name as a joke, which the author references.

7. Fur blowing up, exploding, being fried, puffing up, etc., refers to cat fur puffing up in anger/fear, and it’s often used as an idiom for extreme anger or emotion. Because the subject is literally a cat, the author uses this phrase a lot.
