Chapter 11: Guard Cat (1)

When he woke up the next day, he was once again shocked.

He clearly remembered that he put Wen Cheng safely on the right side of the bed before he went to sleep, but what was the current situation? Looking at Wen Cheng lying on his chest, Yu Linfei vaguely felt a headache coming.

“… At least there’s no drool.” He moved the cat, who was still sleeping with eyes closed, to the bed. Yu Linfei got up and began to get dressed.

He had some important things to do today and wanted to have the cat stay home for the day, but… it shouldn’t be a problem, right? Tying his tie, Yu Linfei hesitated as he looked at Wen Cheng; the destructive force of a kitten… shouldn’t be too bad, right? Thinking like this, Yu Linfei headed out. Of course, he filled his cat’s tray with food and water before he left. He also put a stool on the side of the bed to make it convenient for his cat to get off the bed once he woke up.

So Yu Linfei left, not realizing that… he’d totally underestimated his cat’s destructive power.

In his sleep, Wen Cheng didn’t know that his owner had left. It hadn’t been long since he’d become a cat, but he hadn’t had a good night of sleep in this short time. His soul was still a person after all, how could he sleep in a cat bed with a cat’s mindset?

Nowadays sleeping in weird beds was very difficult, so he cherished his return to a soft mattress. If you didn’t enjoy it, you’d just be letting yourself down. Wen Cheng slept soundly, snoring, and had many dazzling dreams while he slept. By the time he completely woke up… it was already noon.

Chinchilla cats would be very lively and sticky to people when small, and would gradually get more reserved as they grew older. When Wen Cheng woke up after a good night of sleep, wiped his face with his claws, and energetically looked around the whole room… yes, it was Yu Linfei’s room.

Wen Cheng saw the clock on the wall and glanced down at his hungry stomach. He was surprised to find that he actually slept until almost noon…

So hungry… Using the stool that Yu Linfei left him, he carefully jumped down to the floor. Wen Cheng wriggled his little body around, looking for something to eat. He figured that Yu Linfei wouldn’t be cruel enough to not leave him any food.

As expected, Wen Cheng found his tray in a corner of the kitchen. He looked at the fish and cat food left on it, as well as a bowl of milk, and Wen Cheng… felt extreme contempt.

It must be that Yu Linfei wanted to get revenge on him for hogging his bed by leaving him these leftovers! In his heart, he made a decision. Wen Cheng then looked at the double door refrigerator in the kitchen.

A good cat must go through the hall, into the kitchen, open the refrigerator, and jump up into it! Suddenly, he recalled the advice from his mother cat. Wen Cheng’s eyes flashed with determination… as he walked steadily towards… the refrigerator.

“Yu Linfei, your mind is wandering again.” Teng Fengyu’s voice was helpless as he said, “What’s the matter with you? You’ve been distracted all morning.”

“I’m thinking about my cat.” Yu Linfei felt constantly uneasy in his heart as he twirled a pen in his fingers, “Are you sure it’ll be okay to leave him home alone?”

“Please!! It’s just a cat, a kitten.” He really didn’t know what to say about his boss’s divergent thinking. Teng Fengyu dumped a stack of materials in front of Yu Linfei and said, “Rather than worry about your cat, you might as well look through the materials that you haven’t dealt with about the Wen clan.”

“Well,” Seemingly knowing that something was a little wrong with him, Yu Linfei took the papers, “Okay.”

Naturally, Wen Cheng didn’t know that Yu Linfei was worried about him. If he knew… it was likely that he would’ve been happier, as he’d lived up to his dignity as a cat, and spent a lot of time… opening the heavy refrigerator door.

The burst of cold air wasn’t enough to put a damper on Wen Cheng’s excitement. Once it’d been opened a bit, Wen Cheng pushed it open even harder.

Wen Cheng then poked his head into the seemingly huge refrigerator… oh, what was there to eat?

His eyes examined everything, and he soon found his target… shredded squid (2) and yogurt on the top shelf… Although it was a little strange why Yu Linfei had some things in his home, he didn’t think too much about it. His hungry, almost flat stomach made him stare at the food, eyes flashing with green light. (3)

Slowly climbing up from the bottom, Wen Cheng used his claws and worked hard to climb up one shelf at a time. Finally, he bit into the unopened package of dried squid in tears. However, because the temperature of the refrigerator was really cold, Wen Cheng first threw the dried squid he wanted to eat onto the floor with his teeth, knocking down the bottle of yogurt in the process. He then walked along the shelf in the refrigerator and climbed back down to the ground.

“Meowu, meowu~” Wen Cheng looked at his spoils, not caring about the still-open refrigerator. Using his teeth to open up the bag of shredded squid, he began to eat a delicious lunch.

In fact, Wen Cheng really liked to eat this stuff. When he was a human, he liked to take home big bags of it from the supermarket. Now that he was a cat, his love for shredded squid hadn’t changed at all. It could even be said that it had… deepened.

The delicious shredded squid and yogurt were just like a dream come true. Once Wen Cheng finished eating, he burped and turned around to destroy the evidence.

Before he could close the refrigerator though, he heard footsteps.

Reflexively, Wen Cheng dove into the gap behind the refrigerator…

Wen Cheng’s intuition turned out to be correct, because the person wasn’t Yu Linfei, it was… Meng Baiqing.

Meng Baiqing, wearing a white shirt and holding a bunch of keys, had a very ugly expression on. He saw the open refrigerator with squid shreds scattered on the ground and looked around the kitchen to find out what caused such a scene.

Wen Cheng naturally didn’t dare let Meng Baiqing find out about him. Who knew what this supposedly easygoing but actually ill-natured young man would do if he found him.

But why did he have a key to Yu Linfei’s house? Wen Cheng’s chest felt uncomfortable as he watched Meng Baiqing close the refrigerator and help him clean up the mess on the ground.

“What the hell,” Meng Baiqing grumbled in dissatisfaction. He was very upset with what he saw when he arrived at Yu Linfei’s house. “I don’t come back for a few days and everything is in disorder (4), it really is like Yu Linfei.”

… Don’t come back for a few days? Hearing Meng Baiqing talk to himself, Wen Cheng was stunned. Has Meng Baiqing been living with Yu Linfei? They haven’t broken up yet? No… He suddenly recalled Yu Linfei’s voice and expression when he answered Meng Baiqing’s call yesterday. Wen Cheng had a sudden idea, it couldn’t possibly be that Meng Baiqing had an affair and was discovered by Yu Linfei…Yu Linfei proposed that they break up, but Meng Baiqing was still relying on Yu Linfei to survive?

However, with Meng Baiqing’s character, he could definitely do such a thing. The more he thought about it, the more possible it seemed. Wen Cheng couldn’t help but quietly walk towards Meng Baiqing in the living room.

Meng Baiqing’s destination didn’t seem to be the living room though, but Yu Linfei’s study.

He walked into Yu Linfei’s study with a few steps and directly opened Yu Linfei’s desktop computer.

… How could he so casually touch Yu Linfei’s things? Wen Cheng racked his brain and quietly mewed as he observed Meng Baiqing’s movements. He had a bad feeling… Meng Baiqing’s actions… seemed to be looking for something?

But he couldn’t be looking for anything good. Opening Yu Linfei’s personal computer randomly would’ve already violated Yu Linfei’s bottom line. Meng Baiqing also seemed to be a little nervous and began to move faster.

He… had to do something… Watching Meng Baiqing, Wen Cheng clenched his teeth. Although Yu Linfei was his enemy, he didn’t want to see Yu Linfei trapped by Meng Baiqing in this way.

But he was currently just a kitten, and there were so few things he could do. After thinking for a long time, Wen Cheng finally came up with an idea…

Lightly running to the telephone in the living room, Wen Cheng jumped onto the coffee table. He pushed the receiver off and dialed the familiar number with inflexible claws.

At that moment, Wen Cheng wasn’t thinking much about what Yu Linfei would think when he got the phone call, or about Yu Linfei’s suspicion… After all, he was just a cat that couldn’t speak. This identity was his best cover; who would think that it was his cat who called him?

He listened to the phone beep a few times before it got through, and the sound of Yu Linfei’s voice filled his ears. He seemed to be wondering how someone at home could call him, and called “hello” a few times before hanging up.

Wen Cheng glanced at the study behind him, then immediately dialed Yu Linfei’s cell phone number again… He was afraid that if he called only once, Yu Linfei would think it was a mistake.

Yu Linfei answered the phone again and also noticed that something was wrong. After a moment of silence, he said that he would come back immediately.

Really great, his heart was relieved, Wen Cheng thought. He’d paid back the package of dried squid that Yu Linfei gave him.

“Why, why is there a cat here?” A confused voice suddenly sounded out from behind him. Wen Cheng’s whole body turned stiffly, and he found that Meng Baiqing had appeared behind him, holding a newly copied CD in his hand!

Translator Notes: Would you go home after getting those calls? I feel like I’d be too freaked out…

Thank you to the wonderful Aylik for edits!

1. More literally “house watching/guarding cat”.

2. Exactly what it sounds like. Dried shredded squid is a popular snack in many Asian countries, it’s really yummy!

3. Think of like a wolf or dog’s eyes flashing with light when it’s hungry, or the flash of spooky eyes in the dark…

4. Lit. something like “a mess at sixes or sevens”. Just means total chaos.
