Chapter 14: Yu Linfei and Su Weixi
Yu Linfei didn’t know what to say when he saw Su Weixi.
He put the basket on the table and looked at Su Weixi in silence.
Su Weixi, having suddenly seen Yu Linfei, was obviously repressing his intense emotions. Although he made his face blank, his shaking hands exposed his inner turmoil.
Yu Linfei and Su Weixi were childhood friends.
It can be said that they knew each other since they started wearing open crotch pants (1), so Su Weixi could be considered Yu Linfei’s best friend before something unpleasant happened to them.
And these unpleasant things destroyed the relationship between Yu Linfei and Su Weixi.
The source of these things was Meng Baiqing.
As soon as he figured out his sexuality, Yu Linfei directly told Su Weixi. He knew that even if Su Weixi couldn’t accept it for a while, he would never throw stones at one who fell down a well. (2) After all, they’d lived together for so many years, and he thoroughly understood his friend’s character.
It’s not like his smile was a disguise. Su Weixi was a genuinely good person who tried to never offend others.
He was gentle, kind and treated all people very politely. Even if someone did something excessive to him, as long as they apologized, he would try to forgive them.
It had to be said that such a character would suffer many setbacks in today’s society, but Yu Linfei knew that Su Weixi didn’t care. In Su Weixi’s mind, at least he had a clear conscience.
Would a man so cheerful, so warm like the sun, commit suicide? He was afraid that Yu Linfei would only take this sentence as a joke right now.
But the currently sleepy Wen Cheng knew that it was no joke.
Su Weixi died right in front of Yu Linfei.
He dodged the helping hand that Yu Linfei held out to him and fell from the high building like a bird with broken wings. The terrible red color almost made Yu Linfei want to directly jump off the roof after Su Weixi.
Wen Cheng knew Yu Linfei at the time but didn’t know his friends very well. He found out later that Su Weixi had died because of a man.
How ridiculous. Just when Yu Linfei was tangled up in his own affairs, his best friend experienced an insurmountable catastrophe and ultimately gave up his life.
Wen Cheng had guessed what likely happened to Su Weixi, but he didn’t dare to ask Yu Linfei. During the period after Su Weixi’s death, Yu Linfei even experienced some suicidal tendencies.
Now Wen Cheng didn’t have to worry about these things because he’d passed out again, but Su Weixi and Yu Linfei were still struggling with the small matter of… Meng Baiqing.
Yes, Meng Baiqing. Yu Linfei and Su Weixi had a big fight because of this young man. Su Weixi, who rarely lost his temper, directly asked Yu Linfei if he wanted him to be his friend or if he wanted Meng Baiqing.
Yu Linfei felt that Su Weixi was being unreasonable. Blinded by his affection for Meng Baiqing, he missed the pain and anxiety in his friend’s eyes. Propping his chin up with a calm expression, he said, “Su Weixi, do you know you look like a jealous woman competing for favor right now?” They then started fighting.
Su Weixi immediately punched Yu Linfei after hearing those joking words, and the stunned Yu Linfei also grew angry. In his mind, there was no way Su Weixi hadn’t heard his joking tone. Moreover, if Su Weixi had calmed down and talked about Meng Baiqing rationally, Yu Linfei never would’ve had this attitude towards him.
Yu Linfei won the war in the end. His mouth was split and his eyes were black and blue as he crushed Su Weixi underneath him. Looking at his powerless and gasping appearance, he asked, Su Weixi, what’s the matter with you?
Su Weixi didn’t answer, but his eyes were red.
Yu Linfei felt that something was wrong, but he couldn’t say it again. He could only let go of this friend that had suddenly turned against him, watch him straighten his clothes in silence, and leave without expression.
Then Su Weixi went abroad.
Without a word to Yu Linfei, Su Weixi seemed to be avoiding someone as he quietly went abroad for nearly a year. Yu Linfei tried to contact him during this period, but he didn’t get any news.
Met with these circumstances, Yu Linfei was angry again. From the beginning, Su Weixi was acting nervous in front of him, and after they fought he inexplicably left the country without a word. He didn’t even leave any contact information for him. Such behavior, in Yu Linfei’s eyes, was telling him that their friendship was over.
He Yi was also clear about Yu Linfei’s character. Although he still didn’t understand why Su Weixi and Yu Linfei were in their current situation, he knew Su Weixi’s character. He knew that Su Weixi would never have done such a thing if he hadn’t experienced some major changes.
So some time ago, he overheard news of Su Weixi’s return from other people. Taking advantage of Second Fluff’s illness, He Yi casually mentioned it to Yu Linfei. As for whether or not he’d go, that was Yu Linfei’s own business.
“Help me see what’s wrong with my cat.” When he arrived at the small animal clinic, he didn’t directly talk to Su Weixi, instead handing over the basket in his hands.
“Okay.” With this faint reply, Su Weixi concealed the joy in his eyes and took the basket from Yu Linfei’s hands.
“Chinchilla?” Lifting the blanket, Su Weixi lifted the sleeping cat and said, “How old is it?”
“He’s just been weaned, but he still has all his baby teeth. He Yi has had him for a few months,” Yu Linfei said calmly, seemingly not preparing to reminisce with Su Weixi at all.
“Oh, what are the symptoms?” Su Weixi originally wanted to say something else, but he pursed his lips when he saw Yu Linfei’s chilly expression, turning back to the cat.
“Spitting up milk, being drenched in water and frozen. I accidentally fed him milk.” Yu Linfei wanted to smoke a cigarette, but he held back when he looked at the cat in Su Weixi’s hands.
Su Weixi carefully examined Wen Cheng’s body, then took out the pen in his coat pocket and began to write a prescription. “Why aren’t you more careful? A kitten’s immune system is very weak, they can’t take baths and can’t drink milk.”
“En.” Yu Linfei said perfunctorily as he looked at Wen Cheng.
“I’m being serious with you!” Somewhat dissatisfied with Yu Linfei’s fleeting look, Su Weixi rapped the desk with his pen. “Cat’s aren’t easy to keep. If you have such a laissez-faire attitude about it, who knows what else could happen. He’s just a little feverish right now, but next time you don’t know what could happen!”
“Hey, Su Weixi,” Hearing the discontented words, Yu Linfei showed a normal smile, “I thought you’d go do something big after going abroad, but in the end, you’re still such a mother-in-law. How can you leave for so long without growing any?”
Su Weixi’s face quickly turned black, “Yu Linfei, don’t give me this same old stuff. Laugh what laugh, just say what you want to say.” (3)
“What the hell is wrong with you that you’d make trouble with me? Is it Meng Baiqing?” Yu Linfei finally asked the key question.
“Are you still with him?” Su Weixi didn’t answer Yu Linfei’s words, instead asking a question.
“Separated,” Yu Linfei said helplessly, “You can rest assured.”
“His background isn’t clean.” Su Weixi carefully chose his words, “And behind your back…”
“He was cheating behind my back, right?” Yu Linfei knew what Su Weixi wanted to say and calmly said, “You knew it from the beginning?”
“Yes,” Su Weixi said, “I went to a bar once and accidentally saw it.”
“Then why didn’t you just tell me?” Yu Linfei raised his eyebrows, “If you’d directly told me, would we have fought?”
Because I couldn’t say anything, Su Weixi secretly answered Yu Linfei’s question in his heart. On the surface though, he forced a smile, “I was so angry that my head was confused.”
“What’s the deal with you going overseas?” Not intending to argue with Su Weixi on this issue, Yu Linfei continued to ask what he cared most about. “What happened to you?”
“Nothing.” Su Weixi’s reply was cold, “I just went abroad to relax for a while.”
“Alright, talk to me about it when you want to.” Yu Linfei knew Su Weixi well and knew that his friend didn’t tell him the truth, but he didn’t continue to ask. Although Su Weixi’s character was gentle, his anger was faster and more intense than his.
“Why did you suddenly think of keeping a cat?” Su Weixi looked at Yu Linfei with some doubt in his eyes. As far as he knew, Yu Linfei wasn’t as patient as he pretended to be.
“It was just chance, He Yi’s cat gave birth to a litter and he couldn’t keep them all, so He Yi gave me one. Just… how do you use these medications? Are they all for him?” Yu Linfei asked, looking at the medicine list Su Weixi gave him.
“Just follow the instructions. Don’t let him get soaked during winter again, as fever is sometimes fatal to pets. If you feed them too much medicine, it’ll affect their kidneys too. Since you want to keep a cat, keep it well.”
“Is it alright for him to keep sleeping like this?” Yu Linfei was a little worried about his cat’s mental state.
“I just looked him over and there shouldn’t be a problem. If the medicine doesn’t work, send him over to me for another look.” Su Weixi said after a moment of thought.
“Okay,” Yu Linfei said. “It’s not convenient to take the cat today, but let’s go out for a drink on some other day. My treat.”
“Okay.” Su Weixi nodded, smiling for the first time.

1. Chinese potty training tool, literally pants for babies with no crotch. Basically, they’ve known each other since diapers. Here’s an example in art, since I really don’t want to put an actual child’s bare butt on here…
2. “落井下石”, hit a person who’s down.
3. “有话说有屁放” more directly translates to something like “say what you say, let it out if you have to fart”.
