Chapter 13: Dizzy
When Yu Linfei had first brought Wen Cheng home, He Yi had told Yu Linfei that because Wen Cheng wasn’t yet three months old, he was still very weak. It was better not to bathe him and he couldn’t be cold.
Although Yu Linfei had never had a cat, he knew that He Yi’s advice wasn’t a joke. When he thought of Meng Baiqing’s treatment of Wen Cheng and saw his very ill appearance, he quickly stepped forward to pick him up. He hesitated though, afraid that he’d be choked on the spilt milk.
“Hey, He Yi, Little Black seems to be sick. He just vomited up all the milk he drank.” Seeing that Wen Cheng had vomited the milk, Yu Linfei took the trembling kitten into his arms and had him lay on his lap. He used one hand to comfort Wen Cheng and the other to call He Yi.
“What?” He Yi sounded very surprised. He was really helpless about the frequent calls Yu Linfei made. “How long have you even had him for? What exactly happened?”
“…” Yu Linfei was silent for a moment, but eventually told He Yi what Meng Baiqing had done to Wen Cheng that afternoon. Of course, he automatically avoided the part where Wen Cheng called him.
Hearing Yu Linfei’s words, He Yi’s hair completely blew up. His voice was sharp and angry as he said, “How dare Meng Baiqing, that bitch, treat my family’s Second Fluff like this! Yu Linfei, you just watched my son get bullied? I tell you, if you don’t explain this well I’ll take back Second Fluff! Second Fluff is so young yet he has to go through such grievances! If anything happens to him you’re in trouble! Hello, are you listening?? Yu Linfei!”
The anger of cat lovers was really terrible. Yu Linfei wisely chose not to poke his sore spot and quietly changed the topic, “You can be angry again later, just tell me what to do with Little Black right now.”
He Yi didn’t continue yelling at Yu Linfei and instead thought for a while before asking, “You fed him milk?”
“Yes.” Yu Linfei looked at Wen Cheng and said, “Milk isn’t good?”
“Of course not!” He Yi’s tone was full of dissatisfaction with Yu Linfei, “Most cats are lactose intolerant. They don’t have the lactase enzyme in their stomach so they can’t digest the lactose in milk. It’s very easy for them to have diarrhea after drinking milk. Let alone for kittens, as their intestines and stomach are more fragile. Carelessness can cost a life… I ask you, Yu Linfei, do you really want to raise a cat?”
“…” Yu Linfei knew that he was at fault and didn’t argue with He Yi… it was true that he was too careless. A series of actions from Little Black that were similar to his gave him the illusion… made him think that Little Black… wasn’t too different from him.
But by treating Little Black as a human being, he found that Little Black was a cat after all. Only… how Little Black knew his phone number… this was really a curious thing.
Not letting Yu Linfei’s thoughts wander for too long, He Yi continued, “What else did you give Little Black to eat?”
“… Nothing…” With the word still in his mouth, Yu Linfei stopped, suddenly remembering the image of Wen Cheng sneaking into the fridge to find food in the surveillance video. Looking at the pathetic Wen Cheng in his arms, Yu Linfei didn’t know whether to laugh or cry, “Wait for a sec, I’ll go check the garbage can.”
… Go check the garbage can? He Yi was shocked at the other end of the phone, thinking that Yu Linfei was really unreliable. He didn’t even know what he’d fed Little Black, having to go to the garbage can to check…
Yu Linfei obviously didn’t know that he was getting a red mark from He Yi again. He was a little worried after seeing the clean yogurt container and the dried squid packaging in the garbage can, “It seems that he also ate dried squid and yogurt, is that bad?”
“Yogurt and dried squid are fine…” He Yi frowned, “But you’d better take Little Black to the vet to check. Little Black is so small that he can’t even have a bath, and Meng Baiqing threw cold water on Little Black… he was frozen for so long…”
“Alright, where’s the nearest veterinarian?” Glancing at his watch, Yu Linfei sighed, “I’ll drive there.”
“Okay, I’ll text you soon,” He Yi said, “Wait for Little Black to get better and then get him vaccinated.”
“Good.” Yu Linfei replied before hanging up.
Putting on his coat, Yu Linfei found the basket He Yi gave him to bring Wen Cheng home and put a soft blanket in it. Yu Linfei placed Wen Cheng gently into the basket.
After vomiting up the milk, Wen Cheng had very little strength. He lay in the basket and watched Yu Linfei with anxiety as he carried him to the door.
Of course, Wen Cheng knew where Yu Linfei was going to take him. From the conversation between Yu Linfei and He Yi just then, he knew that Yu Linfei was going to take him to the vet’s. His mind was dazed and his heart was a little uneasy. As for the reason he was uneasy… It was funny, but he was actually really worried that Yu Linfei would find out that he stole food…
If your cat could open the refrigerator, it must be seen as strange. He put his paws over his eyes and sadly sniffled. When he first arrived at Yu Linfei’s house, Qin Xin almost killed him. After escaping from the devil’s grasp, he met this crazy Meng Baiqing, meeting Yu Linfei was definitely bad for him!!!
Hearing the sound of Yu Linfei opening the car door, Wen Cheng, who was completely covered in blankets, fell asleep again in the swaying basket.
As Yu Linfei was about to start the car, he was interrupted by He Yi calling.
“What’s wrong?” Yu Linfei thought He Yi was worried about Little Black and comforted him, “Why don’t you send me the address? I’m taking him to the hospital now.”
“I just remembered that Su Weixi recently opened an animal clinic, you should go there.” With a trace of hesitation, He Yi said, “By the way, you should ask him to hang out. You’re such old friends, why not?”
“…” Yu Linfei was silent, as he didn’t want to argue. At this time, Su Weixi suddenly appeared.
“Forget it… If you won’t want to, then pretend I didn’t say anything.” He Yi smiled self-deprecatingly, unexpectedly feeling even more troubled… In reality, he didn’t want to get involved in the matters between Yu Linfei and Su Weixi, but he’d happened to see Su Weixi two days ago when he got back from overseas. He looked haggard, and encountering such a thing today, he naturally wanted to give Su Weixi a hand in this way.
However, He Yi didn’t use deception to get Yu Linfei to meet Su Weixi. After all, he knew Yu Linfei’s character well. If he did that, they might not even be friends in the future.
“Go ahead.” Irritation flashed through Yu Linfei’s eyes. He held the steering wheel with one hand and the phone in the other, expressionlessly talking to He Yi on the other side of the phone, “What’s the address?”
“Oh… Next to the supermarket on C street… it’s very close. Linfei, you aren’t too angry with me, are you?” He Yi thought that Yu Linfei’s condition was a bit wrong.
“It’s fine. We have to clear things up sooner or later anyways.” Yu Linfei’s face was indifferent, “I’ll go first and call you later.”
“Okay,” He Yi responded, then heard the end call tone. He held his own wiggling Bun in his arms, who was looking at him with a very lively look. With an unheard sigh in his voice, he said, “It’s good to clear things up, but why…”
Wen Cheng didn’t know how long he’d slept, but when he woke up, he heard some vague conversation.
Having just woke up, his head was still a bit dizzy. He stood up and poked his head out of the basket to try and breathe.
But before he could get out of the blanket, he heard a voice that stunned him.
A voice that Wen Cheng couldn’t forget even after death was calling Yu Linfei’s name, “Linfei.”
In the moment that he heard this sound, Wen Cheng was shocked completely stupid. Then, trembling, he lifted the blanket with his little paw and saw the man before him. Wen Cheng really thought he was crazy –– he saw a person that had already died, Su Weixi.
Su Weixi was a name that no one wanted to mention.
Yu Linfei was unwilling to mention it, because Su Weixi was the person he’d let down more than anyone. Wen Cheng didn’t want to mention it because he didn’t know Su Weixi very well, so he didn’t dare to deepen the wound in Yu Linfei’s heart.
Since that incident happened, the name had become taboo between Wen Cheng and Yu Linfei. Neither of them mentioned it.
But how could the person who should’ve died be standing here in front of him, quarreling with Yu Linfei? Doubt and fear swirled in Wen Cheng’s wide eyes.
Yes, fear.
At the beginning when he first became a cat, he was barely able to comfort himself by thinking that even a cat could live peacefully. Later, when he was adopted by Yu Linfei, he could tell himself that he was trying to figure out why he’d died.
But now? People who should have died long ago reappearing in front of him? What was this? Wen Cheng’s whole body slowly grew colder. In this moment, he finally understood why Yu Linfei’s home had no traces of him, why Meng Baiqing would reach out to Yu Linfei again, and why Su Weixi would stand before him –– the reason was very simple. He’d become a cat in this world, and it wasn’t the world that he’d died in at all.
In this world, perhaps there was no one named Wen Cheng, and Yu Linfei hadn’t killed him, so what was he? Was he really just a cat from start to finish? Just like Zhuang Zhou dreamt a strange dream of a butterfly? (1) Seriously doubting his own existence, Wen Cheng’s body shivered powerlessly… finally, he fell back into his basket.
To put it bluntly… if even his existence was denied, what need is there for that person to live? Thinking about this, Wen Cheng closed his eyes dizzily.

1. Zhuang Zhou’s butterfly dream alludes to an ancient philosophical statement put forth by Zhuang Zi. In the piece of writing ”Zhuangzi * Qi Wulun”, Zhuang Zhou turns into a butterfly in his dreams, wandering between Heaven and Earth happily, and in waking up and finding he is still himself, debates on reality. It is hard to tell whether Zhuang Zhou’s dream turned into a butterfly or whether a butterfly’s dream turned into Zhuang Zhou. The philosophy argues that it’s impossible to distinguish between real and unreal. It’s similar to this case, where he wonders if he ever really was Wen Cheng and if any of that was real, or if he was always just the cat.
