At this moment, there were fewer people outside, but more flames, illuminating the streets much more brightly. Occasionally, screams and the sounds of things breaking could be heard, making everyone look on guard.
Feng Yajing couldn't help but take a couple of steps closer to Lin Jixin, tentatively grabbing the hem of his coat.
Lin Jixin glanced at her and suddenly reached out to touch her face.
Feng Yajing let out a scream; her face was now smeared with a patch of dirty blood, which was both foul and stinky, making her want to vomit.
Lin Jixin didn't care whether Feng Yajing understood or not. Satisfied with the blood-stained face, he continued forward.
On the way, they saw many looters taking advantage of the chaos. Most of them were busy robbing various stores and paid no attention to the two of them, who clearly had nothing valuable. A few with poor eyesight were just asking for trouble. Lin Jixin raised his gun, and they immediately ran away in fear.
Just as they were about to turn the corner near Lexing Pavilion, Lin Jixin's expression suddenly changed, and he ducked behind a building.
Hundreds of people holding torches were surrounding the long metal door of Lexing Pavilion, blocking the exit so tightly that no one could get through.
It seemed that many looters had set their sights on this place.
This wasn't surprising. Lexing Pavilion was well-known, and everyone knew that the people inside were either rich or powerful. Naturally, there were many who wanted to take advantage of the situation. Judging from the current situation, the other entrances were likely in similar conditions.
However, since the people inside were wealthy and influential, they certainly wouldn't neglect their own safety. There were four police officers and a few security guards inside, waving their guns and constantly warning the approaching looters.
A few people with guns were no match for hundreds of looters, but fortunately, these hundreds of people were not well-organized. None of them wanted to be the first to take a bullet, which barely maintained the situation.
Feng Yajing, who was closely following him, also came over. Seeing the dangerous situation, she couldn't help but cover her mouth and let out a low cry.
"Let's go," he said to Feng Yajing in a low voice, as this place was too unsafe.
Just as he took a step, his legs suddenly felt weak. If it weren't for Feng Yajing's timely support, he would have fallen.
He then realized that his left arm had swollen to the size of a calf, and half of his body had lost sensation.
"Go there!" He pointed to a nearby building.
He had already figured out why this was happening. He had overlooked something very important.
The "Seven-Pronged Crystal" could strengthen all living things, including the bacteria in a dog's mouth. These super bacteria were far beyond his current body's ability to resist.
With Feng Yajing's help, they entered the empty building. He struggled to sit against the wall and threw the hard-earned "Seven-Pronged Crystal" into a bottle of milk he had prepared. Watching the milk in the bottle gradually turn a light blue, he took a small sip.
Milk was one of the substances that could dilute and stabilize the violent energy of the "Seven-Pronged Crystal." Fortunately, he had prepared many things just in case. Otherwise, he would have been in a bind.
Such a simple treatment would certainly leave some issues, but compared to his life, they were insignificant.
"Hide well." By this time, the numbness had spread to his chest. He only had time to place the milk bottle close to his body and tell Feng Yajing before being swallowed by darkness.
When he woke up, he found himself lying on a sofa in an office, wrapped in a curtain that had been torn from somewhere.
He tentatively lifted his left hand. Fortunately, it could move, and he had sensation in it. The swelling had also reduced significantly.
Looking at his watch, he saw that he had been unconscious for about seven or eight hours.
He sat up.
As soon as he stood up, Feng Yajing, who had been sleeping with her head on his leg, also sat up groggily. Clearly, she had brought him here. Was this a case of good deeds being rewarded? If he hadn't shown mercy, who knows what would have happened to him if he had fainted on the chaotic street.
"You're awake," Feng Yajing said in surprise.
The blood on her face had dried, forming black and red cracks, which looked quite frightening. However, in Lin Jixin's eyes, her face was quite pleasing, and he smiled in response.
At this moment, a commotion suddenly erupted outside.
They exchanged a puzzled look and quickly went to the window. They were on the third floor, and the window directly faced the entrance of Lexing Pavilion, which Feng Yajing had clearly chosen on purpose.
The commotion was caused by these people. Many looters had become disappointed and left because they couldn't enter Lexing Pavilion, and the situation seemed to be improving. However, when they pushed a large truck towards the entrance, things reached a critical point.
As the truck was pushed towards the entrance, more and more looters joined in, and the truck's speed increased.
"What do we do!" Feng Yajing's face lost all color.
Inside Lexing Pavilion, the police officers, seeing the truck heading towards the entrance, also turned pale.
Yang Fang, the leader of the police team, raised his gun at the truck but couldn't bring himself to pull the trigger.
Since standing guard at the entrance of Lexing Pavilion, he had been exhausted. Although he had been authorized to use his gun in emergencies, he knew that the weapons in his hands should only serve as a deterrent. Once he fired, it would likely enrage the looters and cause even more serious consequences.
So, he raised his gun at the truck, his hand trembling with tension, but he couldn't bring himself to fire the first shot. His subordinates were even more hesitant.
As the truck got closer, the excited expressions of the looters were clearly visible. Suddenly, a few security guards turned and ran.
Cursing under his breath, Yang Fang finally made up his mind and was about to give an order.
A gunshot rang out, and the truck suddenly spun sideways, flipping over with a screech and sending dust flying. The looters let out terrified screams.
"Boss, you're amazing!" The youngest police officer exclaimed in surprise.
Hitting a tire in a group of people with a handgun was indeed a miraculous feat.
Me? Yang Fang was stunned. I didn't shoot, did I? The gunshot seemed to come from the nearby high-rise.
Before he could figure it out, the other two police officers also ran over, one of whom, his longtime partner, patted his shoulder enthusiastically.
Could it really be me? He was confused.
At the window on the third floor, Lin Jixin put away his gun and glanced at Feng Yajing, whose eyes were forming a heart shape. He asked calmly, "Are you hungry? I have food in my bag."
"I'll get it!" Feng Yajing obediently rushed to the bag.
Watching her back, Lin Jixin finally showed a hint of pride—this ability was actually quite common in the future, but it was hard to resist when a beautiful girl looked at you with admiration.
After eating and drinking, the two sat on the sofa to rest.
Feng Yajing suddenly moved a little closer.
"What's wrong?" Lin Jixin asked, seeing her hesitation.
After a moment's hesitation, Feng Yajing whispered, "I'm worried about my family."
"I'll take you in," Lin Jixin offered. Unlike the looters who were afraid to enter alone, the two of them could easily climb over the wall.
"Really?" Feng Yajing was both surprised and delighted.
After packing their things, they came to a quiet section of the wall. Fortunately, the electronic alarms were out of power and ineffective. After some effort, he helped her climb over the wall and then followed.
The light here was much dimmer than outside. They could vaguely see a green area, a lake, a bridge, and a stream, covering at least ten thousand square meters. In the city center, where land was extremely valuable, this was truly luxurious.
Following the path and crossing the bridge, they turned a corner. Behind the trees was an elegant villa. Feng Yajing, who seemed to recognize the way, quickened her pace.
"Stop!" Just as they were about to pass the villa, someone shouted.
Lin Jixin turned his head. A tough-looking man had just stepped out from the side of the villa, apparently a bodyguard. Another person was standing in the shadows nearby, providing cover.
The two men's guns, pointed at them, made his pupils constrict. In the future, this was a universally recognized "extremely dangerous signal."
"Don't shoot!" Feng Yajing, lacking his confidence, quickly shouted, "I live nearby."
Gun control was very strict, and even though the residents of Lexing Pavilion were of high status, only a few at the very top could possess guns. Feng Yajing fully understood the bodyguards' mindset; if they felt threatened, they would shoot without hesitation.
The bodyguard's stern expression softened slightly, but he didn't lower his gun. He called to Lin Jixin, "Drop your gun."
It was the gun in Lin Jixin's hand that had caused such a strong reaction.
Lin Jixin casually put away his gun. He didn't take two ordinary bodyguards seriously, with or without a gun.
However, he soon realized he had overestimated their intelligence.
The man clearly took his action as a sign of weakness and called out, "Mask, take off your mask."
Lin Jixin looked at him coolly, not moving.
The bodyguard raised his half-lowered gun, the dark barrel pointing at his head, and shouted, "Hurry up, mask!"
Lin Jixin remained silent, his pupils narrowing even more.
The atmosphere seemed to freeze. Feng Yajing's mouth was half-open, wanting to persuade but feeling a heavy pressure in her chest, unable to utter a word.
"Old Chen!" A young woman's soft voice called out. A curtain of the sliding glass door was lifted, and the dim candlelight illuminated half of her pretty face.
"Miss!" The bodyguard turned his head slightly, responding respectfully, but the gun remained steady.
"Let them go."
"You're lucky," the bodyguard said, putting away his gun and coldly adding, "Get lost!"
It was unclear who was lucky.
However, from the moment the woman appeared, Lin Jixin's attention was completely diverted.
Wen Haimin. He never thought he would encounter her here.
His chest swelled with a surge of emotion, hard to suppress.
Due to the influence of the "Seven-Pronged Crystal" and similar energies, more and more people with physical and mental abilities far surpassing ordinary humans would appear in the coming years. Among the various hostile gazes, Wen Haimin was one of the most terrifying. She had pushed for the "Mutant Control Act," which led to the oppression, enslavement, and conditioning of countless new humans. In those dark days, "dying with dignity" had become the greatest luxury for some evolved humans.
For him, who refused to submit to the powerful, many times of desperate escape and near-death experiences were all due to her. Even though he only saw half of her face, the unforgettable image was etched in his memory.
This must be fate, he quickly calmed down, but his killing intent grew even stronger.
