Chapter 8

"Your previous task of intimidating the unscrupulous husband Li Yu has already earned you 10 experience points. You need another 10 experience points, which is roughly equivalent to completing one more system task, to upgrade your ghost avatar from level 1 to level 2." The Ghost System explained in detail to Meng Gui.

"Then give me a new task quickly, so my ghost avatar can level up from 1 to 2, and I can deal with that evil-warding pendant and punish the fraudster Huang Zhiqiang!" Meng Gui said to the Ghost System.

"There happens to be a task to catch a minor ghost, which will earn you 10 experience points. After obtaining these 10 experience points, your ghost avatar can level up from 1 to 2. Are you willing to take this task?" The Ghost System asked Meng Gui.

"Of course I'll take it!" Meng Gui quickly agreed.

"Task issued: Catch a hanged ghost in the women's restroom on the fifth floor of Building 10 at Cangnan University."

"Task deadline: Within three days."

"Task objective: At least drive the hanged ghost away from Building 10."

"Completion reward: 100 ghost points, 10 experience points, 1 marking card, 1 surveillance card, 1 door-locking card, 1 light-flashing card, 1 soundproofing card."

"Failure penalty: Three months in the Ghost Prison."

"Why do system tasks always come with a failure penalty?" Meng Gui protested, somewhat annoyed.

"That way, you'll have more motivation to complete the task! Besides, system tasks offer experience points, allowing your ghost avatar to level up. It's only fair to have both rewards and penalties!" The Ghost System chuckled.

"Can the penalty be removed?" Meng Gui tried to negotiate with the Ghost System.

"Sorry, that's not something I can decide. You call me the system, but I'm not the system itself; I'm at most a system assistant or spokesperson." The Ghost System's electronic voice explained helplessly to Meng Gui.

"Ghost System... what kind of existence are you?" Meng Gui asked.

"Well... I don't know, and I don't have the authority to answer... Actually, you don't need to worry too much about the task penalty. The system's initial tasks are quite easy to complete if you use your head." The system assistant comforted Meng Gui.

"Alright, tell me the details of the task." Meng Gui didn't waste any more words.

"The location of this task is the women's restroom on the fifth floor of Building 10 at Cangnan University. A girl once hanged herself there due to heartbreak. Since then, some girls who use the restroom late at night have reported hearing someone crying and even seeing the hanged ghost."

"Since the hanged ghost has never harmed anyone, the school hasn't taken these girls' words seriously, considering them just rumors. Your task is to find the female ghost and catch her, or drive her away from Building 10 at Cangnan University." The system assistant explained the task details to Meng Gui.

"Is that so?" After accepting the task and thinking about it, Meng Gui suddenly felt a bit regretful.

In the previous task of intimidating the evil man Li Yu, and when he actively opened the ghost domain to scare Huang Zhiqiang, he only needed to set up the scene and scare the target into wetting themselves. But this time, the task was to catch a hanged ghost.

If his ghost avatar couldn't defeat the hanged ghost and failed to drive her away from Building 10, wouldn't his real body have to serve time in the Ghost Prison?

The over a hundred tortures in the Ghost Prison were as terrifying as the commercial for a certain instant noodle... so terrifying that it was hard to believe!

Meng Gui would rather die than experience it again.

"Don't worry, the target of this task is just a minor ghost. Your avatar, now a level 1 ghost recognized by the system, is much more powerful than her. She's no match for you. As long as you open the ghost domain in time when she appears, your ghost avatar can easily defeat her or drive her away from Building 10." The Ghost System, as if knowing what Meng Gui was worried about, quickly reassured him.

"Really?" Meng Gui felt much more at ease after hearing the Ghost System's words.

"Would I lie to you?"

...

Cangnan University is one of the top-ranked universities in Cangsong City, with tens of thousands of students and a large campus with dozens of teaching buildings. In the evenings, these buildings are open for students to study.

To complete the task of catching the hanged ghost, Meng Gui dressed as a college student, carrying a few books, and mixed into Building 10, finding a seat in a classroom closest to the restroom.

Building 10 has only five floors. It was just after nine in the evening, and despite the legend of the female ghost, many students were still studying, and the women's restroom was frequently used. The female students didn't seem afraid to use the fifth-floor restroom, and they even occasionally joked and scared each other with the legend.

This was because, although there was a legend of a female ghost in Building 10, there were no reports of her harming anyone. So, when there were many people around, the students didn't feel afraid of the ghost.

It wasn't exam season, so after ten o'clock, most students gradually left to go back to their dorms. Only a few super-diligent students continued to study, but they usually left by half past ten.

After ten o'clock, the building gradually quieted down, especially on the fifth floor, where the classrooms were almost empty. The restroom was no longer in frequent use, and any remaining female students who needed to use the restroom probably wouldn't go to the fifth floor alone. For Meng Gui, this was a good time to catch the ghost.

To catch the female ghost and complete the task, Meng Gui was prepared to stay in the restroom all night.

At half past ten, to ensure he wouldn't be disturbed while catching the ghost, Meng Gui patrolled all the classrooms on the fifth floor. Now, except for one classroom at the other end of the stairs, which still had two male and one female student, all the other classrooms were dark and empty.

The female student probably didn't dare to go to the restroom alone. After patrolling and returning to the restroom area, Meng Gui looked around again and waited for about ten minutes, confirming that no one was around and the restroom was empty, he then entered the women's restroom.

The layout of the women's restroom was similar to the men's, except there were no urinals on the wall. There were five stalls along the wall. At the back of the restroom, a drain pipe, where the girl had hanged herself, was now sealed off by the school.

Meng Gui called out a few times before checking each stall, confirming that they were all empty and there was no sign of the hanged ghost.

With no choice, Meng Gui had to stay in the women's restroom, quietly waiting for the hanged ghost to appear.

The surroundings became increasingly quiet.

"Hey! System, are you there?" Meng Gui asked the Ghost System.

"Yes, what's up?" The Ghost System replied.

"Nothing... just... asking..." Meng Gui replied, somewhat irritably. Although he was brave, he wasn't fearless. Scaring people was one thing, but now he had to catch a ghost and face another ghost, and the silence around him was quite eerie.

"Hahaha... are you scared?" The Ghost System immediately mocked and ridiculed Meng Gui.

"Scared of what! I just want to ask... if she doesn't come out, do I have to keep waiting here? If she doesn't come out tonight, do I have to come back tomorrow night?" Meng Gui quickly defended himself.

"During the task, I can't give you any hints. You have to rely on yourself!" The Ghost System sounded gleeful.

"Why don't you just die?" Meng Gui was even more irritated.

"You... why is a guy in the women's restroom?"

Just as Meng Gui was talking to the Ghost System, a panicked female voice appeared behind him.
