Chapter 20. It’s Best That Both Sides Profit
Yu Xing only thought that this cry of “Yu Xin” felt inexplicably familiar, very much like the tone her eldest brother used to use when he became serious. But to be so abruptly called in such a manner by a strange man? She was a bit confused.
She returned to her senses, feeling that she’d been a bit too carried away today. Perhaps because she’d chatted a bit too happily with her eldest brother on the way over, and so she didn’t stop, even when a stranger suddenly appeared in front of her.
She immediately looked at her own brother, then said, “I’m sorry…..”
Yu Ze promptly realized that the real him seemed to have just suddenly darted out from nowhere – perhaps it was that Song Yan’s attitude was too natural, that it made him forget himself.
At this moment, he could only pretend that the scene just before hadn’t occurred, and smiled as he introduced himself, “Hello, I am Song Yan. As I’ve often heard about you from Yu Ze, I therefore felt very close with you.”
He made the tone of his voice become soft, hoping to quickly smooth things over.
Yu Xin was soothed by his words, and immediately felt much better. But she still felt a bit confused; the Alpha in front of her eyes, really looked somewhat familiar, even the tone of his voice was strangely familiar. The other said he’d felt close, and she actually really did feel somewhat close. But as of that moment, she couldn’t figure out exactly why.
“Yeah? My brother mentions me often? But he only told me today about him dating you….” She suddenly froze.
Song Yan smiled as he said, ” We haven’t went public yet, but now that I’ve told you ahead of time, can you carefully protect your brother’s secret?”
As he spoke, he sat down right next to Yu Ze, so that he was seated on the same side as Yu Ze was. Yu Ze glanced at him, then glanced at their arms, seemingly estimating the distance between the two of them.
But Song Yan looked as if he still didn’t even care, he even leaned a bit closer towards Yu Ze’s side.
“You see,” he whispered to Yu Ze, “how nice is it that the three of us are eating together, you can see your younger sister….what do you want to eat?”
Yu Ze felt it all somewhat ridiculous, but he couldn’t deny it, and Song Yan acting like this – he unexpectedly even found it a little cute.
On Yu Xin’s side of the table, she finally remembered who Song Yan was.
She took another hard look at “Song Yan”, her contact lenses almost about to pop out, she directly asked, “Brother Song Yan, what do you do for a living?”
Yu Ze knew his sister wanted to verify “Song Yan’s” identity.
“I’m managing my family’s company,” he said.
Yu Xin looked at the Song Yan next to his side. Song Yan gave her a look of confirmation, and added, “That’s right, he’s the Second Young Master Song whose family owns a mine.”
Yu Xin didn’t think he’d really be the Song Yan, but what made her even more surprised, was her brother. He began to continuously praise Second Young Master Song, just gabbled away non-stop; he praised his way from the other’s assets, down to the value of his face, from the other’s educational background, all the way to his social connections. Even him becoming champion of a swimming competition back during college was praised. Her eldest brother looked just as if he was extremely proud of having found such a rich and powerful Alpha like Second Young Master Song. But the “Second Young Master Song” at the side was yet extremely self-possessed, even to the point of being somewhat indifferent.
“You’ve told me before, that back when you were on the swim team, there weren’t many that were able to persevere though practice.”
“Did I tell you that?”
“You’ve said it before! Do you not remember your own matters anymore?”
Yu Xin was by now a little embarrassed, and taking advantage of Song Yan’s effort to catch a breath, she finally interrupted him, “Ha ha ha, the relationship between you two is really good.”
“Brother Song Yan,” she said to Yu Ze, “I’ve never seen my older brother like a person so much, much less so passionately.”
Yu Ze ridiculed her words in his heart: Because that isn’t your brother!
He felt that acting as lovers – while Song Yan seemed to have become addicted to the performance, his imitation was not the least bit accurate at all. Yu Xin was most likely in a daze from the sudden overwhelming amount of information from the two in front of her, and so even if there were quite a few points for doubts, she’d no time to ponder them one by one.
Yu Ze’s words also began to gradually increase, and so with his participation, the dialog of their conversation finally became more normal.
Yu Ze asked about Yu Xin’s studies aboard, where she went to play, her arrangements and plans after coming back. Yu Xin finally let go of the tension she held against Second Young Master Song, and happily began to speak of her own affairs.
Yu Xin had seen some scattered bits of gossip related to Second Young Master Song before, and while she didn’t really know much about the person, the impression she got from the Internet was a somewhat pompous, extremely high-profile playboy.
But from what she saw so far today, stuff on the Internet still couldn’t be entirely believed, at least she felt that the Second Young Master Song in front of her eyes was rather modest, and wasn’t bad at all.
No wonder the flowers in her eldest brother’s heart were so bursting with joy.*
* 心花怒放 idiom; bursting with joy, to be over the moon, to be elated
After they finished the meal, Yu Xin was the first to leave. She could tell that the two men still wanted to be by themselves for some time; the two had thought she hadn’t been paying attention when they’d been eating, and had even exchanged meaningful glances quite a few times. The two of them were being so secretive, so mysterious, accompanied by the occasional foolish laugh (mainly from her brother); it was obvious there was some scheme there that couldn’t be told to anyone else.
But Yu Xin wanted her brother to accompany her to the parking lot; she’d a bellyful of words she wanted to say.
As soon as the two left their seats, Yu Xin immediately rapped on her brother’s shoulder, “My gawd! You actually concealed this so well! I didn’t know even a speck of it!”
Song Yan smiled as he said, “If you often search for my news on the Internet, you should’ve seen that Second Young Master Song and I have eaten together quite frequently over this period of time. It shouldn’t have been hard to guess? Seems like you don’t really care about your bro.”
Yu Xing pouted, “It’s not like I’m one of your fanatical fans, why would I search for your schedule?”
She again lamented, “But I really didn’t think you would get together with Second Young Master Song. This doesn’t seem like your preference. Didn’t you say before that you won’t get together with one of the rich and powerful? Therefore you rejected Xu Shi before.”
The smile on Song Yan’s face began to slowly fade away, “Rich and powerful isn’t my preference?”
Yu Xin glanced at him, then laughed as she said, “Don’t tell me you’ve changed your preference now? Seems like Xu Shi just wasn’t handsome enough!”
Song Yan immediately felt that this younger sister was extremely sensible.
Song Yan sent Yu Xin away, then returned to meet with Yu Ze. He sat down opposite of Yu Ze.
Yu Ze lifted his eyes from his cell phone, “You’re not coming to sit here now?” He patted the seat next to himself.
Song Yan laughed as he propped his chin up with his hands, “I saw that you were about to become angry towards the end. How rare it is to see Teacher Yu unable to continue acting, or unwilling to continue acting.”
“You have greatly destroyed my image in front of my sister,” Yu Ze said, “I do not act like this when I date.”
Made him seem like such an unrealistic romantic.*
* 花癡 phrase; someone (usually female) who is easily infatuated, who daydreams about love, who is often delusional about love (dictionary translates it to mean ‘nymphomaniac’, but that’s such a derogatory word….)
Song Yan’s voice carried a hint of laughter, “No matter what type of image you have, the family that loves you will just accept you, isn’t that right? Aren’t you supposed to be happy when you’re dating?”
“But now isn’t the time to be happy, is it?” Yu Ze asked.
He was referring to the tangled mess of the Song Family, as well as this current situation of theirs.
Song Yan shook his head. The lighting in the box was soft, made one’s skin seem layered with a filtered radiance.
“In any case,” he said, “I feel I’m rather able to chat with your sister, my mood was good when I was with her.”
“Don’t you think it was too good?” Yu Ze replied.
Song Yan nearly asked if he was jealous.
But Yu Ze had already calmly continued, “Because my little sister is also an Omega. Of the five of us siblings in the family, only she and I are Omega. How to put it, you should probably know that some study had said it before, that among siblings, those of the Omega attribute would find a comforting effect being around each other.”
Song Yan’s smile gradually began to stiffen, “So you are saying, that the familiarity at first sight I felt with her today, is not due to my especially good performance, but due to…pheromones?”
Yu Ze nodded, “I would think so.”
Song Yan couldn’t help but slam a fist into the table, he almost couldn’t resist laughing, “I was careless!”
They finally stopped talking nonsense, and began to exchange each other’s information.
Yu Ze informed Song Yan of the progress regarding the stage play for the theater.
“You shouldn’t hesitate,” Song Yan told Yu Ze, “just do what you want to do, there’s no need to be too anxious….”
“Thank you,” Yu Ze said.
“Thank me for what?” Song Yan asked, “I’m only saying what I ought to say.”
Yu Ze took a sip of water, then said, “If it wasn’t for your cooperation, and for your help, this would have been impossible for me. And the many matters of the Song Family, they all have you dealing with them from behind the scenes.”
If Song Yan didn’t agree, if Song Yan didn’t cooperate, things wouldn’t have went this smoothly.
Song Yan gave a soft sigh, “Teacher Yu, you’re really….” He couldn’t find the proper word to describe it.
If it had been someone else that changed into him, something extremely frightening might have happened. Song Yan himself only needed to give it a casual thought, and he’d be able to think up a million ways to seize “Second Young Master Song’s” identity and property.
For many people, this identity and the wealth it carried with it, was worthy of murder; of going from the inside, to the outside, thoroughly annihilating, thoroughly obliterating. But yet, Yu Ze only wanted to return to the stage.
“I’m a businessman, when I encounter such a situation, it’s best that both sides profit,” Song Yan said. He almost reached out to hold Yu Ze’s hand – which was also his own hand. But he held himself back, because if Yu Ze came to know of some of the thoughts inside his head, that’d be a sort of taint towards him.*
* not sure if the meaning came across, but SY is afraid of YZ knowing his thoughts b/c SY’s having naughty thoughts and he feels that YZ knowing of his intention would be a blemish/defilement/taint to YZ’s purity (leaving this note in hopes of better phrasing during future edit)
Yu Ze smiled, “Of course.”
Both of them felt much better that evening; they finally had enough energy to deal with the coming day.
The next morning, Song Yan was woken up by a phone call from the manager.
The Film Emperor’s manager sincerely, and earnestly, asked from the other side of the phone: “Teacher Yu, what have you been up to lately?”
Translator has something to say: Poor careless Song Yan, his heart had such a roller-coaster ride going up and down with the siblings’ words =.=
