Chapter 27 : Unrest Discussion
Edda and I walked behind Heidar.
I could feel the presence of a few people when we’re about to arrive at the end of the stairs.
「Sorry, I’m coming with someone.」
Heidar spoke as he looked back at us from his shoulder.
「It doesn’t matter.」
I was almost convinced that this gathering of adventurers were about to discuss the countermeasures against the grey cult.
But of course, no one was stupid enough to say that.
Reason being no one knows who and where the ears and eyes of the army hiding.
Heidar didn’t tell us about the details of this gathering for this very reason.
The reason why the adventurers gathered on their own in this way to plan a countermeasure against the grey cult was to rub the army’s face with mud.
That was only natural.
I mean, the duty of the army was protecting the city from dangerous demon beast, devil, or dangerous group such as the grey cult.
It’ll be a huge problem if the army abandoned their duty to protect the citizens of the city from the blatant provocation of the enemy, and then dumped the responsibility to the adventurers.
No matter how strong the army’s authority, such an act might become the impetus for their doom.
For example, if this matter was known by the other army’s authority, things wouldn’t look good for the army’s authority of this city.
Especially for the magus assistant who held the responsibility for that area, I heard that they’re literally always at each other’s neck.
That’s why this kind of act was risky.
I mean, if the army knew about this gathering, they might have sent their enforcer to disband this gathering.
Even Edda might have realized the gravity of this situation, thus she was just following Heidar in silence like me.
I expected that Edda, who has yet to get used to the situation in the city would hold some doubt about Heidar’s invitation but, it seems she guessed the situation.
I mean, this gal was quite stubborn one after all.
I expected her to at least ask one or two questions and wouldn’t just go with the flow.
Suddenly, I felt a light poke on my shoulder.
I guess she was anxious about this situation.
When I turned around, though I saw Edda was already walking by my side, she raised her arm with an expressionless look on her face.
「What’s matter?」
「…」
Edda whispered to me after she looked at Heidar who was walking in front of us.
「Where are we heading to right now?」
「Eh…」
… It seems she really had no idea about this situation.
I face palmed, wondering how to explain the current situation to her.
「I-It can’t be helped, he only told us to follow him, so I thought you understood the situation.」
「So you really followed us without grasping the situation after all…」
Edda frowned, pouting angrily upon hearing my remark.
「Isn’t that natural? I mean, you following him since you know the situation all I did was tag along with you.」
「You… just when I’m wondering why are you following obediently, it turned out that you really are just going along with the flow.」
That moment, Heidar turned around toward us.
「Your name… is Dean, right?」
「Y-Yes, so you already know about me.」
「Well, I mean the girl who helped you before was calling your name. Since you already know my name, let’s pass the introduction.」
The girl he talked about might be referring to Mani.
Sure enough, Mani did call my name during the battle against Vlad.
「Yeah, you’re a famous high ranking adventurer after all, Heidar-san.」
「Please stop with such flattery. Such a title doesn’t match very well with me, or rather, I hate it. Rather than that, that woman is…」
Heidar’s eyes were looking at Edda.
「…」
Edda just walked silently, folding her arms, showing no intention to answer Heidar’s question.
「She is Edda! My friend, she’s way more powerful than me!」
I hurriedly introduced her before the air worsened due to Edda’s silence.
「… I-I see, it’s pleasure to meet you.」
Edda nodded, barely avoided making a doubtful look on her face.
Heidar showed a forced smile as if he understood the reason behind her action.
This person… wasn’t that good with forcing laughs.
The awkward expression on his face was as clear as the day as he made that forced smile.
The Edda in question was looking ahead of us with a nonchalant look on her face, as if it has nothing to do with her.
… Which reminds me, when Edda came to the guild for the first time, the one who introduced her was Fedor.
All she did that time was stand on the side while pouting at Fedor.
It seems… Edda wasn’t used to this either.
『It’s as if you’re her caretaker, Dean.』
Beelzebub told me so.
At this time I was really grateful that Edda couldn’t hear Beelzebub.
「C-Come to think of it, are you the only one who received the invitation from the army, Heidar-san? the members of your party should be…」
「… No, those guys who are exploring with me never say anything about that. Most of them anticipate the fall of my fame due to my battle against Vlad a while ago, and left after complaining at me for subjugating Vlad.」
… Is he deliberately aiming for that?
Originally, the army was hated by those guys but many ugly sides of the army got exposed after numerous clashes.
I also understood that I also would only be involved in one feud after another against the army as long as I continued down the road of adventurer.
「Come to think of it… there’s few other adventurers entering the army’s base too. But, since this is a rather touchy topic, those guys also kept it a secret, that’s all I know. But, one thing for sure, the army aren’t lacking personnel or anything…」
「… Seriously?」
Adventurers entering the army itself aren’t that rare.
Though they rarely invite someone to join like Heidar’s case, there’re many adventurers who sent applications to join the army.
But, it was rare for several people to join at the same time.
Especially in this Romburgh city, the number of the members of the army who fell in the line of duty in the last ten years could be counted in one hand, and no one died in the last two years.
「Well, unfortunately it’s not like they’re turned over a new leaf and are trying to do their job properly to protect the city though.」
Heidar tried to crack a joke.
I… for one thing or another, felt anxious about this situation.
Just in case, I should keep this matter in my mind for now.
When I smiled wryly in response to Heidar’s joke, I felt a pair of eyes gaze at my back.
I turned around a little bit, and looked at Edda.
She looked at my back with a bored, or rather lonely look on her face.
When my eyes met with her beautiful crimson eyes, she averted her gaze immediately.
「Uhm… I think it’s okay if you want to join the conversation you know.」
「D-Don’t treat me like a child!」
「C-Calm down, red-eyed lady! please don’t raise your voice since we’re about to arrive.」

TN : Yeah, it’s walking chapter, at least Edda won’t slash anyone who annoy her anymore.
