Chapter 3 of 11

3 Iridescent Character Creation

4 min read963 words

Mongrel Stacker

The newest work from Magicraft, a company that’s been leading the VR industry ever since the world’s first actualization of a full dive VR game.

Its greatest feature was none other than the availability of non-human avatars.

Up until now, if you attached limbs you wouldn’t usually have on a human avatar such as tails, wings and etc, symptoms similar to phantom pain would occur in real life. However, MonSta managed to use some kind of method to overcome this problem and players were now able to use characters that completely differed from reality.

That being said, this work has all the characters as humanoid for some reason and their fundamental appearances can’t be tampered with either. In short, if you chose to be a snake person, you’ll have scales and maybe a tail on your avatar. If your race is a deep one, then your avatar might use gills or fins. Nevertheless, your base form still has a humanoid appearance. Though if you’re a race that can transform, you might be able to attain a true appearance that depicts certain blasphemy.

MonSta’s world is post-apocalyptic, set in the cosmos after the calamity that struck the world, known as Ragnarok. In addition, there are no nights, only a world with endless days, but aside from that, you could say it’s just a royal medieval fantasy.

“Uwaa, there’s clearly over 100 different races listed here…… hm?”

I haven’t even started the game yet, but I’ve received a message? What’s up with that?

“On the assumption that you’ll be using your parallel thinking, we’ve selected a few races that we’d like to recommend. We’d be glad to know if it can serve as reference during your character creation. -Management.”

Magicraft company is way too thoughtful. How terrifying……!

〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜

Now then, the 3 races that the admins had recommended me were these presented.

Homo Y’golonacensis

・Usually, it’s just an ordinary human but it’s true form is incandescent. Its body is gigantic, it has no head, and slobbering mouths are positioned on its palms.

・If you’re able to focus on 3 things simultaneously, then it’s possible to be able to chant 2 different types of magic even during close combat.

Gug Hybrid

・Its arms are split at the elbow and its jaws are vertically situated. Excluding those aspects, it appears human.

・If you’re able to utilize parallel thinking, with 4 appendages as well as a powerful maw, your strength would likely be unrivaled in close combat.

Shoggoth

・It usually mimics the appearance of a human being, but it’s true form is an amorphous mass consisting of protoplasmic blobs and a faint iridescent light emits from its entire body.

・If you’re somehow able to control parallel thinking in a way that’s similar to how a computer would, you may be able to master its true form.

All of them were charming. They were all appealing but……

“Let’s go with the shoggoth.”

If I didn’t pick shoggoth here, I’d be a coward.

“I ended up deciding on my race before my name. ‘Mone’…… is a bit too simple, isn’t it.”

What should I do?

Anekawa Mone, Anekawamone, [Ane] Kawa [Mone] …… Alright.

“Corona.”

Hmm? It seems that the character creation had finished even though I didn’t choose my occupation yet.

Oh, so they ended up doing it for me?

Wait, wait wait wait. No need to panic. First, let’s look over the description for the race.

…… It appears that the shoggoth’s initial occupation was predetermined as a maid if the player was female and a butler if male. To have this race be fated to serve as a maid, I guess it’s karma in a sense.

I mean, well, that’s fine.

The problem rather, is the fact that I can’t obtain EXP and magic. In MonSta, skills are gained when you level up and it just so happens that I can’t earn experience. In other words, the reality is that I might be prohibited from obtaining EXP, magic, and skills.

…… Isn’t this way too conditional?

For the time being, I regret to say this, but the character creation was completed a lot earlier than I’d expected so I’ll be killing time by practicing how to control this true form.

Come to think of it, shoggoths also receive that, you know…… 5x more magic damage.

〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜

After squirming around in the shoggoth form for a bit (it doesn’t move), a window showed up in front of me.

“Sorry to keep you all waiting. Starting now, Mongrel Stacker will begin its services.”

My vision was overwhelmed with light.

I reflexively shut my eyes. Then, the next moment I opened them, I was placed in the middle of a strangely large garbage waste.

…… As expected of the shoggoth, it’s hard-mode even from the start.
