“Aahhh! Don-don’t let go of me!”
“I won’t let go of you!”
Shouma was floating in the sky. In his right hand, which he raised over his head was the Fusuma who had inflated itself like a balloon or blimp.
The pair decided to look for the Random Assailant from above where they would have a better view.
Shouma grabbed the paws of the Fusuma, while the kaii grabbed the back of the boy’s wrist.
Their overlapping shadows flew higher than the four and five story buildings that scattered in the city below them. Since no one was looking up at the sky at this time of the night, the two of them were still unnoticed. However if they continued their little adventure like this, there was a chance they would definitely make a scene sooner or later.
“For now let’s go to where this assailant appeared before.”
“If so, then that place lies in the southern direction from here…I mean, south in the opposite direction!”
“Oh, just shut up!”
The Fusuma cried in a high-pitched voice, along with its usual ’kyuu-kyuu’ sound. Shouma was no longer afraid of it at all since the little kaii looked just like a flying squirrel. Despite the fact that he was kind of displeased that the creature spoke in nothing but what one would call a detestable language, far from matching its cute appearance.
They arrived in front of the station where Hikasa-san was attacked. She was strangled when she entered a side-alleyway nearby this place. Although there was no person in front of the station who would have the attributes of someone to attempt such horrendous acts.
Several suited figures, men and women were hurrying home after a long day of work. Young students in their school uniforms were listening to music from their earphones. A couple of young men seemed to enjoy their nightly jogging and an old man, who had clearly drunk too much, was swaying steadily in the street below.
A train might have arrived so even more people flooded out of the station.
(What to do about this…)
Shouma couldn’t afford to look around recklessly. Even though they were flying they just couldn’t get to go and look over all the narrow alleys. There sure were blind spots. So without some aim and guesswork this would be even more difficult.
(For the time being I should look out for dark-haired women who might be potential targets…)
This was the first thought which ran through Shouma’s mind while he strained his eyes. But this was also quite burdensome.
Since there were more women with black hair than he would have expected.
Especially the High School students, whose school usually won’t allow hair dying, would mostly have their natural black hair.
It was still nineteen o’clock, so there were a decent amount of students leaving from Cram school.
“Hey”
As Shouma pondered about what to do he suddenly heard the voice of the Fusuma from above. The creature’s clearly perplexed tone made him look up.
“Why did you put your faith in me? Shouma, I might just try to attack you here and now, then run away.”
“Seriously, stop with these kinds of thoughts. Please…”
“I won’t try it, I just…” said the Fusuma assertively.
Shouma scratched his cheeks with his free hand.
“I trusted you or rather I thought it would be faster if the two of us searched together. I mean, you can fly, right? It would be faster to simply search from the sky.”
“Hmm”
Also, I simply thought that I wouldn’t like it if someone did the same thing to me. It’s nettlesome when someone snatches away what you work hard for, isn’t it? Well, it’s not that I really understand how the attacking of others could be considered one’s hard work.”
He would probably never get used to this kind of feeling in his whole lifetime.
“You are a human being, but you’re a weird one even among them.”
“Is that so?”
“You didn’t seem too scared of me.”
“Nah, when you attacked me, it gave me quite a turn.”
His face suddenly covered and the fear of his breathing stopped was not a trivial thing. Now that he recalled it, Shouma shuddered again.
“People are usually more terrified.”
“Really?”
“At least, I don’t think any other human would talk like this… Are you not afraid of beings, like us?”
“Fear of beings like you?”
Shouma cocked his head in puzzlement.
Even when he first started seeing the kaii a month ago, he sure was surprised, but not terrified. All that he felt about these creatures were simply ’annoyance’, ’bothersome’ and ’noisy’. He never even thought of being terrified of the existence of these beings itself.
“You are actually used to seeing things like us, aren’t you?”
“It’s not that I’m used to it, but how I get to accept it.”
The Fusuma stared down at him with a little uncertainty in its eyes.
Shouma rubbed his chin with a hmm.
“Oi, you know, you didn’t seem like a bad guy at heart! Even humans are afraid of others who try to harm them like the Random Assailant, you know? I’m not sure how to say this, but the kaii that don’t try to harm me aren’t unearthly in my eyes. Maybe, but who knows! When you attacked me earlier I was really terrified. You just scared the hell out of me!”
“Shouma, you bracket us with humans.”
“Is that a bad thing?”
“I’m not saying it’s bad, but…”
The Fusuma squeaked as if it was having trouble answering him.
“Hey Shouma, would it be so difficult with that one million yen addition?”
“Yes, dreadfully…so please, don’t run away.”
“…Un, okay.”
The Fusuma obediently nodded.
