Shouma made sure the Fusuma wouldn’t just drop him all of sudden, then after a few moments he shifted his gaze downward. Below them, there were as many people as usual.

“Nevertheless, I wonder how we are going to find it.”

“Can’t you see the Random Assailant down there?” asked the kaii.

“I don’t even know what it looks like in the first place.”

“You are a surprisingly useless guy, Shouma.”

“You can shut up!”

At that moment, the phone Shouma had in the pocket of his denim jeans began to tremble. He somehow managed to pull it out with one hand. On the screen he saw the name of ’Tendou’ which he had just registered into his phone.

When he pressed the call button a cheerful voice struck into his ears.

“Hey Shouma, you alright? The Fusuma still didn’t try to run away?”

“If you are just bantering, could you please do that later?”

“Bantering…how rude. I forgot to tell you something earlier, that’s why I called. I think that it’s pretty useful information, don’t you want to hear it?”

Shouma was quite annoyed at the pompous way Tendou spoke, but the information was essential at the moment. Shouma replied while trying hard to preserve his peace of mind.

“…what is it?”

“The characteristics of the assailant.”

Shouma’s breath got caught in his throat just for these few words. He pressed his ear against his phone, anxious to hear every detail Tendou could provide.

“From Hakkasan-san’s experience, we know that the weapon which was used by the Random Assailant was something similar to a towel. But carrying around a towel, though less suspicious than a string, would also be shady in its own way, wouldn’t it? However, there are some people who can confidently carry a towel without arousing suspicion in that location and at that time of day. Can you guess what kind of people I’m talking about?”

Shouma let his vision slip to the ground below, then, when he spotted that group, gasped.

“Is it possible…. that it’s the joggers?”

“Correct answer.”

Didn’t all of the joggers on the running lane have towels around their necks? Having a towel with oneself in that group would allow anybody to carry it without letting anyone suspect anything.

“The main street in front of the station is a famous jogging lane in these parts of the city. People come here after work to run there in the evening.”

“Surely, there are a few people running here and there.”

“Then look a bit closer and try to find it. Our target must be running alone, frequently passing in front of the station, staring intensely at black haired women.”

Shouma did as he was told. He strained his eyes to search for the running lane.

“Moreover, if one of them walks behind a girl, maybe tries to take the towel off from one’s neck…then that’s it, bingo!”

“Whaa! Fusumaa!!”

When he called out to the kaii, the Fusuma suddenly began to drop, tugging the perplexed Shouma with itself.

In front of them was a black haired woman and behind her a silhouette of a man, wearing a jersey, who tried to wrap a towel around her neck.

With the impetus from his glide, Shouma kicked the man’s back from behind as hard as he could. They simultaneously let go of each other’s hand and the boy’s body hit the ground as he rolled over.

“Ouch…”

“Uh…”

The man or it would be better to call him as the Random Assailant, slightly groaned.

He fell forward and seemed to have hit his head, yet he was still conscious.

“Fusuma, do it now!”

“Aaa!”

The Fusuma wrapped itself around the face of the Random Assailant, covering it completely.

The man struggled for a while but eventually fainted, and fell back to the ground. Shouma, with a standoffish manner, kicked the unconscious man with his feat, who rolled over without as much as a sound, as if he had just kicked the bucket.

“You didn’t kill him, right?”

“Like I would make such a blunder. I live by a ’no-kill’ principle.”

“Then, that’s fine, but…”

“…Shouma-kun?”

Shouma turned around as he heard a faint voice he knew from somewhere. There stood Tomami with a dumbfounded emotion written on her face. Apparently, it was her who almost got attacked.

Shouma quickly grabbed the Fusuma and hid it behind his back.

“Just now, you fell from the sky, right? And that person on the ground…”

“Um…”

He didn’t know how to answer.

Even if Shouma were to be honest, it wouldn’t be a story she’d believe. He didn’t even have the confidence that he would be able to explain the kaii thoroughly enough to begin with.

Shouma let his gaze sweep over her, while he put the unconscious man, who had been stretched out on the ground until now, to his back.

He knew it would be dangerous to leave the man there for the time being. If he would put him down in front of the police station with a letter, surely the professionals would take care of the rest.

“Well! Washizu-san, be careful on the streets at night!”

“Eh, Shouma-kun!?”

Shouma left the place as if he was running away.

He thought he heard Tomami saying something to him from behind, but he pretended not to hear it.
