There was an accident

Yu Qingluo gave Shen Ying a cursory look but ultimately ignored him. Raising her head, she looked at the man behind the curtain, asking with interest: “Was it you who laid that formation in the yard?”

But before the sitting man had a chance to speak, another sharp voice sounded from behind one of the pillars in the room: “Shut up, who allowed you to be this rude to the Lord?”

Yu Qingluo turned her head towards the source of the sound, finding that a woman was now standing left to Shen Ying’s position. She had red lips and white teeth. With a soft looking appearance, she was like a bright and shiny pearl.

If it wasn’t for her speaking out in such a sharp tone, Yu Qingluo might have treated her as a mere part of the background[1].

Yu Qingluo took back her gaze from the woman and turned again to the man sitting above. Smiling, she continued: “I’m very interested in arrays and formations, could you teach me?”

“Bold! What kind of status do you have to make the Lord personally…”

“Wu Dong, shut up.” the man above finally opened his mouth, raising his fingers and motioning her to be silent. Wu Dong went quiet and could only look at Yu Qingluo unwillingly with eyes full of venom.

Shen Ying’s forehead was covered by a fine layer of sweat. He knew that the Lord was becoming impatient with the words of the woman before him. Maybe she would soon be fed to the panther.

The woman was fearless, but he wasn’t sure whether it was because she was too courageous or too ignorant. No one has ever dared to say such things to his Lord. Even he, Mo Xian, Wen Tian or Peng Ying who did most of the errands for him had never dared to ask the Lord to teach them something or ask for random things. She also hasn’t answered the Lord’s question yet.

Shen Ying moved two steps silently to the side, opening the distance from her as much as possible.

Yu Qingluo sharply noticed his movement, complaining inwardly. Before she could sneer at his action, the cold voice of the man sitting above sounded again: “Teach you? You just burned my Hundred Flowers Array down. You should be begging me not to kill you. So, why do you think I’d ever teach you any of those things?”

Yu Qingluo’s eyes brightened, feeling that this voice of his was so magnetic behind the coldness, it was kind of sexy and velvety to the ears.

“For what reason?” She raised her brows and smiled again “Because I can heal this injury of yours”

“…” Shen Ying and Wu Dong’s expressions changed immediately at this. Both sending her sharp glares as if she tried to move, they’d kill her instantly.

‘Could you two chill out a bit?’ she thought at their reaction. Does she look like a villain that would take advantage of other people? They are really wronging her too much looking at her like that.

“How do you know that I am injured?” The man above was also stunned. He thought that his breath was steady enough, his movements natural enough. There were no apparent signs of injury anywhere. This woman had barely entered the hall, so how did she know?

“Oh, nothing much. When I just came in, I caught the slightest scent of blood.”

The scent of blood?

Not only that man, but Shen Ying and Wu Dong also looked at her with suspicion. The scent of sandalwood (from the incense) covered the whole hall. Even when sniffing they could only smell that and catch not even the slightest whiff of blood.

This woman’s nose… was it really that sensitive?

Wu Dong sneered: “I don’t believe it. The Lord’s wounds were treated by my own hands and there was not a single bloodstain sipping through the bandages, just where did you get that bloody scent from? I think you have an ulterior reason to break into the Mo residence or maybe you’re part of the group who wounded the Lord, you…”

“Wu Dong!!” Shen Ying scolded her sternly, with disapproval flashing in his eyes. How could this be said so openly? It’s almost like she’s prepared to tell her every secret.

Yu Qingluo raised a brow in understanding, finally fixing her eyes upon Wu Dong’s figure. With a smile on her lips, she said: “It turns out that what hurt your Lord was your treatment. No wonder he’s still that weak, he mistook a charlatan for a real doctor.”

She shook her head out of pity as she talked, sighing filled with regret.

These words made Wu Dong’s face flush in vexation. She moved her body intending to slap her but was prevented by Shen Ying holding her into place. The Lord didn’t even say a word to oppose this woman, this made her mood worsen. She sneered uncontrollably: “Did you call me a charlatan? Then who the hell are you? Right now, you’re just a criminal who broke into the residence and burned down the Lord’s Hundred Flowers Array. According to the residence’s own rules, you should be dragged out and fed to the panther. Hah, do you still have the guts to judge my medical skills? You should be worrying about yourself instead, otherwise, you’ll die without knowing how.”

Yu Qingluo couldn’t help but admire her. Was this woman reminding her Lord that he should kill her?

Seeing her looking so angry and hostile towards herself, Yu Qingluo wondered if she wouldn’t actually be interested in the Lord of the residence instead and was actually afraid of having her man robbed. Tsk, tsk… if that’s the case isn’t her vision a bit too narrow? Does she look like the kind of hungry person who’d rush at any man she sees?

How could she say it? She has a son and she’s a good wife* and loving mother type of woman.

(*ED: I thought she was single) (TL: She is, it’s an idiom to say that she’s a demure, good woman with a family to care for, haha)

“Did you say so much in such a short time out of anger? Or is it that you are actually feeling guilty because of your poor medical skills?” Yu Qingluo’s face had not a single trace of anger, her tone was soft and emotionless.

Seeing her calm demeanour, the lips of the man sitting up above lifted slightly in a sign of appreciation.

This instead made Wu Dong even angrier, especially since both Shen Ying and the Lord were still inside the hall with them. This made her feel like she was being ridiculed and humiliated.

Her hands squeezed tightly into fists; her eyes filled with ruthlessness: “Do I have no skills? I am the only disciple of the Elder Doctor of Qiongshan. Under the heavens is there anyone who dares to dispute his skills? Just who do you think you are?”

Elder Doctor of Qiongshan? Yu Qingluo blinked, that name did seem somewhat familiar.

She turned her head to look at Shen Ying and asked honestly: “Who is that Elder Doctor of Qiongshan? Is he famous?”

Shen Ying’s mouth twitched. Wondering from under what stone did this woman come out. There’s not a single veteran doctor that does not know who the Elder Doctor of Qiongshan is. After a moment, he also gave an honest answer: “The Elder Doctor of Qiongshan’s skills are without peers. It doesn’t matter if it’s among high officials or commoners, he is treated by both as Hua Tuo’s[2] reincarnation. But after retirement in a distant region, it became hard to find him even if one is seriously ill. Wu Dong is his only disciple and has been passed all of his teachings.”

So amazing? Yu Qingluo pensively touched her chin, she should eventually go see this old doctor one day since she was very interested in discussing about medical skills.

However, how could such an amazing figure accept such a loser for an apprentice? And still, the only apprentice?

If this Wu Dong indeed had the real skills conceived by that Elder Doctor of Qiongshan, then this title of “Reincarnation of Hua Tuo” was just a fallacy.

Noticing her silence, Wu Dong was finally relieved. She didn’t believe that this woman would continue to play her after mentioning her master’s name. Now she was curious to see what the woman was going to do.

But as she was expecting to finally get back at her for all the ridicule an urgent voice sounded from outside the hall.

“Lord, there has been an accident.”

Translator’s Notes

[1] – In the novel, the author uses “Vase-like person” to refer to her… which means something along the lines of ‘ a person who only exists to make the surroundings pretty but is otherwise useless’.

[2] – Hua Tuo is a legendary doctor written in chinese history. He was, I believe, the first to perform surgical procedures and save the lives of many patients. (If you know a bit about chinese medicine you should know that their pharmacology and use of internal medicine was highly developed, but there are few to no records of surgery… as it is mostly taught in medical schools using the western standards). It was said that his skills were unequalled. Unfortunately, he met a tragic ending at the hands of an emperor who he suggested having brain surgery in order to treat a diagnosed tumour. The emperor thought he wanted to kill him, so he sentenced the doctor to death. The emperor’s life wasn’t much longer as the disease consumed him just as Hua Tuo has diagnosed.
