Happy Easter folks! Here’s an extra chapter for you to enjoy.
As a way to thank everyone for our great start this week, we’d like to offer for free the first 4 chapters in a book chapter-like pdf format we’ll be providing our Patreons. They’ll be first presented in such a fashion, individually and later on as we complete a certain set of chapters (e.g. major story arcs), we’ll be publishing a bundle version.
Where’s her son?
Although Nannan’s body shook from the travel, he never regained consciousness.
By the time he woke up, he was now inside a cold room. Without a single person present around, not even the man in white.
Nannan started to climb out of the bed, pulling the cover off his body. Seeing that his clothes were still in place without a single part missing, he secretly patted his chest while letting out a relieved sigh. Speaking to himself he voiced: “So good, so good! My innocence is still safe. Otherwise, I’d be ashamed to meet my elders underground.”
“Pfft…” outside the window there’s was a sound of someone trying to restrain a laugh. Nannan’s heart shivered. Without saying anything else, he immediately returned to lie again on the bed. Using the quilt to wrap his body tightly. As he closed his eyes he blurted out: “I’m asleep.” The person outside the window gave him a glance, at the same time propping himself in the window frame. Already safely landing inside the room.
He laughed as he walked towards the small bump over the bed. His mouth curved in a grim, that became bigger and bigger as his figure approached the bed “Are you the little kid that Mo Xian[1] brought over?”
Nannan shut his eyes with even more strength, ‘Not hearing anything!’
‘Mother told me: when you are in a strange place you must make a correct assessment of the situation. You must first clearly grasp all the movements around you. You cannot casually speak with strangers.
But Nannan’s thoughts were the complete opposite of his mother’s teachings, he thought that the best way was to play cute and get everyone’s hearts. Certainly, there might be a lot of bad guys who would try to traffic such a cute child after that.
Therefore, just for now…. play dead, just play dead.
The man saw that the boy was still as motionless as before, which increased his interest. He took a few more steps, directly sitting at the edge the bed. Continuing to laugh he asked: “Hey, kiddo, are you hungry? Want to eat something?”
Nannan’s eyes continued shut tight, but his dark long eyelashes trembled slightly at the question. Especially when he heard about food. He couldn’t help but let out a ‘gulp’. The saliva started pooling in his mouth.
“Kiddo, what’s your name? I heard that you’re the one who poisoned Mo Xian, isn’t it? But why would you want to poison him? Did he do anything bad to you?”
His next words, however, went straight through Nannan’s ears, as he wasn’t paying much attention. He could only think about the food, and oh, how much he wanted to eat it. Nannan Reeeally wanted to eat.
“Kiddo, you’re in our territory now. The food and that bed, they all belong to us. Hah, this older brother has such a good heart to even tell you that. If you could only solve Mo Xian’s poisoning… this brother will bring you something to eat, what do you think?”
Well, well, well… Nannan’s eyes couldn’t stay shut anymore. His heart was stirring as he couldn’t bear it but want to throw himself and grab that man’s hand and not let it go!
“Kiddo, the food we have here is really delicious, especially that fragrant and juicy Crispy Chicken. Everyone likes it so much that they can’t control themselves. I promise you…”
The man’s speech still hadn’t stopped when a knocking sound came from the door. He stopped talking, hoisting himself and looking towards the door he asked, “What’s up?”
“Master Shen, the Lord is looking for you.”
“…” his face became contemplative for a bit, his sight going back to Nannan’s body in the bed. After a moment, he rose and replied: “I got it, let’s go.”
Ceasing his previous words, he didn’t try talking again with Nannan. After smoothing his clothes, he moved towards the door, exiting the room.
Only after the sound of the door closing again was heard and the steps gradually faded into the distance, Nannan sat up stunned in bed. That Master Shen or whatever, how could he be like that? He had just made him a promise, how could he leave without an explanation?
At the bare minimum, the very least he should’ve done was tell him where the hell could he find that crispy chicken, he was really hungry!
Nannan forced himself to wipe the saliva dripping out his mouth and lifted open the quilt again. He turned his head to see his small purse hanging on the bedside, he took it back unconsciously.
Forget it, mother said that a person should use his own strength to eat. So, he should go find himself that fragrant, juicy crispiness.
Nannan stuck his head out from the door after opening it slightly. Seeing that there was no one outside he let out a suspicious look. This place…. hm, it gives me a mysterious feeling. What kind of person is that Lord something coming out from their mouths? if it was mother here…
Nannan’s footsteps were swift as he moved through the residence ‘right! He forgot about his mom!’
‘I’m so done’, by now mother is certainly looking for him all around. He better hurry back…
But, what about his fraaagrant and juuuicy crispy chicken?
Mother or… Crispy Chicken? Mother? Crispy Chicken? Which one is the most important??
Nannan sighed. He was getting concerned. Crouching on the floor, he couldn’t decide on what to do. That was until this very weak scent drifted towards his nostrils, causing his eyes to brighten on the spot. What mother, what crispy chicken. Everything in his mind was completely tossed aside. Sniffing this smell, he didn’t need a second thought as he decidedly followed after it.
As for the person that he had just tossed aside from his mind, at this moment, she was still hiding behind the screen in Yu Zuolin’s room. Silently listening to his conversation with his subordinate.
There were gradually many points that she took notice of until quietness came as evening fell. Eventually, Yu Zuolin got up to leave with his subordinate. It seems that they were going to get supper.
Yu Qingluo’s eyes squinted. She moved swiftly and soundlessly out of the guest room to leave the inn in a hurry.
The inn’s building ground floor, which had a restaurant, was already filled to the brim with people.
Her eyes swept over the crowd and without catching sight of Yu Zuolin and his subordinate, she knew that he certainly wouldn’t be planning to eat here. She quickened her pace, hurriedly stepping out of the door and looking around the streets.
Just as expected, it didn’t take long before spotting the two familiar figures. Yu Qingluo had already stayed for half a month in the City of Jiang. The streets and dark lanes were much more familiar to her than to Yu Zuolin. Her body moved by in a flash, taking a shortcut and arriving rapidly in a place in front of where he was.
Seeing that the distance between herself and those two was about 2 or 3 meters, she crouched and threw a coin into the bowl of the beggar in the corner, smilingly she started a conversation with him: “Help me up for a bit.”
The beggar looked at the money, his eyes brightened and in a controlled lowered voice he uttered “Miss, please say it.”
“Wait for those 2 people to come by, then leak some news for them to hear. Say that 5 days from now, the Ghost Doctor will appear in the south district of the City of Jiang in the Fulong Tavern to provide help to the sick. The quota this time will be of 50 people. In a first come first served basis.”
Isn’t Yu Zuolin looking for her? Isn’t he going back if he doesn’t find her?
Then she’ll let him bask in the sun for a few more days, to see if he has that kind of patience.
The beggar looked in the direction her fingers were pointing at and saw a pair of people who didn’t look like locals, so he laughed and accepted her offer straight away with a vigorous nod. “Sure thing, lady, you can relax. I’ll surely do this right.”
Yu Qingluo nodded with a small smile in the corner of her mouth. Standing up, she gave them a last glance. This time she turned back to leave with a smile still on her lips, going in the direction of the restaurant where she left her son.
However, as soon as she stepped through the door, she noticed that the previously noisy restaurant was now quiet and deserted. There were no customers, and the shopkeeper and his helpers were putting away the chairs.
Yu Qingluo’s browns knit. She had a bad premonition in her heart. Raising her head, she confirmed that not even the shadow of her son was left in the beam.
Fuck, where’s her son?
