There’s no one in the room

The panther had an elegant and aloof posture. Its eyes were slanted and only when hearing its master’s voice, the panther moved its head slightly. Glancing sharply at the secret guard standing in the middle of the hall.

“Who was the one who broke in?” The man opened his mouth, letting a cold tone.

“Answering the Lord, the person looks like a 17 or 18 years old young lady. Your subordinate believes that her clothes seem to be of higher quality. She has a fresh face and judging from the strength of her steps, she should not have any internal strength. Your subordinate can infer that… she may just be a young lady of a good family that lost her way into the residence.”

“You can go.” The man didn’t wait for him to finish before lifting his hand and sending him out in an impatient fashion.

The secret guard was taken aback: “Lord?”

The man went quiet, but Shen Ying who was standing right in front of him gave a constrained laughter: “Whether it is really a young lady who has lost her way or a spy entering the Mo Residence, there can be only one end. No one that enters the Hundred Flower Array is allowed to leave ever again. Go, you can let her fend off for herself. If she had really lost her way in, then she can only blame her own bad luck. The Lord has no time to give his attention to other matters. So, you don’t need to bother the Lord.”

The secret guard shuddered. Nodding, he turned around and left.

The main hall’s door was closed once again. The man behind the curtains started to cough all of sudden.

Mo Xian and Shen Ying took a step forward at the same time “Lord, your injury…”

“Don’t bother.” The man raised a hand to stop them from moving forward. Then sneered: “Such a small injury cannot claim my life.”

Mo Xian and Shen Ying glanced at each other, with a trace of worry flashing through their eyes. Even if the Lord’s injury isn’t fatal, it wasn’t as small as he was making it to be. If the wound wasn’t treated well, they feared that the healing process wouldn’t be too easy.

“Mo Xian, how is the poison in your body?” while the two bodyguards were still worrying, a low voice sounded again from behind the curtain.

(TL notes: I’ll name the 4 personal bodyguards of this Lord as ‘bodyguards’ and as for the other guards, they don’t get their own name. So they are the ‘secret guards’. If anyone here knows what a secret guard is, then you must have a guess about the Lord’s identity. If not, then I won’t spoil :P)

Mo Xian hurriedly recomposed himself. Then said in a small voice: “Your subordinate has already consulted with Wu Dong. But she is helpless against this poison.”

Shen Ying turned his head towards him “Even Wu Dong was unable to detoxify it?”

“Yes.” Mo Xian gave a wry smile, touching his face which bore a bluish hue. His skin was turning stiffer and colder. He thought that this was mostly caused by the poison in his body, but what made him feel worse was the occasional feeling of generalized weakness. Contrary to one’s expectations, he didn’t feel like he was going to die from the poison. With a concerned expression, he let out his inner feelings: “I think this poison is not a fatal one, it seems to only drain a person’s strength.”

“Even losing one’s strength is already a huge problem.” Shen Ying frowned. Thinking about the little kid lying on the bed at this moment, he shook his head with a smile forming on his face. “Mo Xian, I still think that it would be better if you took the kid to find his mother. Although you seem fine right now there’s no guarantee that there will be no problems at all if the poison stays on your body for too long.”

Speaking of the little boy made Mo Xian grit his teeth in frustration: “When I get my hands on the antidote, you’ll see how I’ll teach him a lesson.”

Shen Ying snickered. That kid didn’t look like one who would aim for a person’s life that randomly. Even when poisoning Mo Xian, it seemed more like he was trying to play a prank on him.

The man behind the curtain was listening to their conversation while still caressing the laying panther’s fur, he took his other hand to his chin in a pensive manner. Seconds later, he said: “Since it’s like that, let’s go and take a look at that kid.”

“…” Mo Xian was speechless. Looking in the direction of the curtain flabbergasted, he said worriedly: “Lord, Wu Dong said that you shouldn’t move too much with your wound.”

“I have the black panther” he spoke, slowly straightening his back and petting the animal’s back. The panther stood up gracefully, raising his head to its front and giving a low growl. Its presence was really impressive.

“Lord, even if…” Mo Xian was still trying to persuade him, but Shen Ying gave him a pull. He stored a complaint in his heart, obediently closing his mouth. Also, how could he change the Lord’s decisions with just a few words of his?

Giving an exasperated sigh, Mo Xian could only lift his head and lead the way. The three men (and one panther) walked slowly towards the room where Nannan was staying.

The Mo residence was very wide and originally was comprised of several large courtyards connected to each other. There were also about 3 or 4 big gardens, excluding the front and back yards which were located far apart from each other.

Therefore, when they finally arrived in Nannan’s courtyard the sky was already dark.

Pushing the door open, Mo Xian called “Brat!” out for Nannan, while looking irritated in the direction where the bed was located.

“Brat! Brat?”

After letting out a few calls. No response was heard, there wasn’t even a single sound in the background.

The panther didn’t even step through the door when the man that they called ‘Lord’ started “Mo Xian, don’t shout. There’s no one in this room.”

“What?” Mo Xian was taken by surprise; he lit the candle on the table and moved towards the bed. The room was already cold, no signs of a living person could be found.

His face grew dark. That brat, where did he run to?

Shen Ying chuckled while entering the room and reaching out to give a pat on Mo Xian’s shoulder. Jokingly he said: “It seems that poison not only weakened your body but your hearing as well.”

Mo Xian glared at him: “Are you still laughing? We have to hurry up and find that kid. There are arrays everywhere in this residence. If that brat isn’t careful enough, he might end up dying.”

Shen Ying’s hand went still. Embarrassed, he pulled it back as if he was suddenly reminded of that fact. “Let’s search separately for him.”

The man leaning on the black panther spoke. He looked a bit tense under his arrogant and stern expression. At the same moment, he patted the feline’s back, before the animal turned around and left with him.

Shen Ying and Mo Xian looked at each other, staying behind. After a helpless shrug, they went about to order the other servants to help in the search.

The panther’s pace wasn’t fast. The man leaning against it had half-lidded eyes, letting it lead him forward.

Suddenly, the black panther stopped and its fur stood up. It seemed annoyed by something.

The man’s eyes snapped open, and he stretched a hand to calm the animal. After becoming calmer, the panther rose its head to rub lovingly against his palm, letting out a growl towards the door in front of them.

The man’s gaze shifted towards the door barely 20 meters away from where they stood. His eyes couldn’t avoid but show some surprise. This stone gate should’ve been guarded by two people but now they were both missing.

“Go.” The man said in a low tone to the panther, that immediately started moving.

Getting closer to the room he discovered the two guards that were supposed to be on duty. They were lying unconscious behind a boulder located sideways to the stone gate!

The man’s expression changed in a flash. His sight shifted towards the gate again, his body was filled with a cold aura. The panther by his side became tense again.

“Inside.” the man patted the animal with a hand and rose the other one to push open the heavy stone gate.

As soon as the gate opened a soft and squeamish voice was heard: “Delicious, hic, sooo delish, hiccup. I knew that following that man wouldn’t be a bad decision after all ~”
