With the sound of the fan whirring in their ears, Yu Zhi Le opened her eyes in the dark and whispered in an airy voice, “Xiao Huan, are you asleep?”
After not hearing a response for a long, Yu Zhi Le thought that Yu Zi Huan was asleep and wanted to move her stiff arm because she had been lying flat on her back with her arms and legs uncomfortably. But as soon as she raised her hands, she heard Yu Zi Huan’s clear voice from her feet, “You can’t sleep? Do you still feel hot?”
Yu Zhi Le really couldn’t sleep, but it was not because of the heat. Instead, it was because she was worried that her poor sleeping posture would result in stepping on Yu Zi Huan’s face in the middle of the night. “No. No. There is a fan blowing so it is not hot at all. It is just…”
“Just what?”
“Would you be mad at me if I were to step on your face?” Yu Zhi Le quickly said in one breath and waited apprehensively for Yu Zi Huan’s answer.
In the dark, Yu Zhi Le heard Yu Zi Huan rolling over, changed to a side-lying position and promised, “I won’t. Go to sleep quickly.”
Since you said you won’t, why is the back of your head facing her leg?
Yu Zhi Le sensed the disdain from the little child and closed her eyes feeling slightly disappointed. However, since there were no psychological barriers, she was relieved and fell asleep quickly.
After sleeping on the sofa for more than a month, it was the first day Yu Zhi Le had slept on the bed and slept so deeply that she didn’t hear the alarm in the morning. While curled up under the blanket, Yu Zi Huan wanted to continue sleeping but he was disturbed by the alarm clock. He reached out and pushed her calves to wake her up.
When Yu Zhi Le saw that it was already half past six, she jolted up and rolled over and got out of bed. Then, she washed up and prepared breakfast. Yu Zi Huan was not still not up when breakfast was on the table.. She opened the door and momentarily looked at Yu Zi Huan, who still had his eyes closed. She thought that he had followed her for nearly a month, and didn’t seem like he had a break. She stood at the door and said, “You can sleep in a little longer if you want. Breakfast is on the table. I’ll prepare your lunch as well. So heat it up yourself, okay?”
Yu Zi Huan didn’t open his eyes. His nose let out a weak groan. Yu Zhi Le didn’t know whether he had heard her words clearly. When Yu Zhi Le was about to close the door, he propped himself up and sat. He scratched the back of his head with a frown, he opened his eyes slightly and sleepily shuffled down to the bathroom with his slippers.
Yu Zhi Le felt a little helpless. As she heard the sound of water inside the closed bathroom door and the sound of Yu Zi Huan brushing his teeth, she felt he was at a huge loss. In the past, she used to lay in bed as long as she could during summer vacation, let alone go to work with adults. She wished she could be left alone to play wildly with the kids in her neighbourhood or her classmates. Without a companion, she would still be quite happy playing by herself. How could she be like Yu Zi Huan who would follow her to the supermarket to help, rain or shine? Even if he wasn’t helping her, he would be studying.
In fact, Yu Zhi Le could generally understand Yu Zi Huan’s mentality. He was sticking to her everyday not because he didn’t have friends his age to play with, but it was due to his extreme insecurity. After Yu Zhi Le gained his trust, even if he didn’t realise it himself, he was subconsciously worried that she would disappear like his grandmother and mother. After all, Yu Zhi Le was not related to him, so it was hard to say that she would find him annoying and leave him one day. He could only feel at ease if he could see her all the time.
This was the result of his rough upbringing and Yu Zhi Le was unable to change it in a short period of time. She could only care about him as much as possible to eliminate his sense of unrest, so that he could behave like other kids and play freely during the holidays without any worries.
Friday approached quickly, Yu Zhi Le, who was busy with work, cooking, and writing novels and other trivial matters, had long forgotten about the blind date that Auntie No. 1 arranged for her. She finished cooking dinner at around six in the evening and had just sat down at the small table with Yu Zi Huan. The doorbell rang ‘ding-dong’ and it was followed by Auntie No. 1’s broken gong-like voice.
“Xiao Yu, are you home? Why haven’t you gone to the teahouse yet? My eldest nephew has been waiting for a long time!”
Yu Zhi Le turned pale with fright. However, she didn’t intend to open the door and was about to pretend that no one was home. Seeing that she did not respond, Yu Zi Huan looked at her strangely. He opened his mouth and seemed to want to speak, but Yu Zhi Le quickly covered his mouth and gestured to him to be silent, while wiggling her eyebrows and shaking her head at him.
Yu Zi Huan realised what she meant and nodded his head to show that he understood even though he was puzzled. Yu Zhi Le removed her hand and carefully got up from her chair. She tiptoed over to the door and leaned on the door to listen to the movement outside.
“Strange, why is there no one at home either?” Auntie No. 1 muttered quietly when she saw no one answer after a long time and glanced suspiciously at Yu Zi Huan’s house door before turning to leave.
Yu Zhi Le heaved a sigh of relief when she heard the sound of Auntie No. 1’s footsteps going down the stairs and leaned on the door like a gecko.
