⠀⠀The journey back to the capital was delayed because of the man who appeared halfway.
This matter could not be ignored by Su Yunchu, but she couldn’t simply bring the man back to the capital in her carriage. Not including the man’s serious internal injuries, even his external injuries were not able to withstand the carriage ride. And his eyes that were blinded by poison, without half a month of treatment, she was afraid would not heal so quickly.
Su Yunchu didn’t understand who was able to attack this man in Daxin’s territory and injure him so badly. According to what she knew, Daxin’s war against Northern Liang had called a temporary truce two months prior. After fighting for two consecutive years, both sides needed a while to recuperate.
And if this man was really who she thought he was, then all of this….
Just those blue eyes. Even though she had been living in Jiangnan all these years, away from the war-stricken north, she knew Daxin’s rumors about those blue eyes and had heard many things about their owner.
Only now she was not 100% certain….
Her maternal grandfather, Song Yan, had been one of the generals of the Northern Expeditionary Army more than twenty years ago. Since the founding of Daxin, there had been wars, both large and small, with Northern Liang in the north and the two countries of the Western Plains to the west, making trouble for two generations of emperors, with no sign of unification in sight.
Song Yan, in his youth, followed the late emperor to fight in Northern Liang. Even though his reputation in the army was not extremely outstanding, he was still a respected general. However, he suffered an injury that didn’t allow him to return to the battlefield and thus retired. And in order for unification of these countries, the Song family had sacrificed two sons so now, only her third uncle, Song Yan’s third son, remained. Since childhood, he was not fond of joining the military but also because of this, he continued the Song family bloodline. Currently, the bloodline was even more famous after continuing Su Yunchu’s maternal grandmother’s family’s scholarly nature.
The Northern Expedition had also become a regret in Song Yan’s heart.
⠀⠀Song Yan died when Su Yunchu was twelve years old. Before that, whenever he talked with Su Yunchu about the Northern Expedition and when talking about the late emperor, Song Yan hated the unification of his country and deeply regretted restoring the Central Plains. Whenever he discussed the art of war, combined with Su Yunchu’s insight from her previous life, he sighed and regretted that Su Yunchu was a daughter.
⠀⠀Before his death, her grandfather praised a man who was young but became the leader of the 800,000-strong Northern Expeditionary Force who had led the army for several years and recaptured four of the ten cities that had been conquered by the Northern Liang during the previous regime.
Song Yan believed that that kind of military talent could achieve his vision of the unification of the Central Plains. Though the general was young, he believed the general could accomplish it.
In the midst of her deep thinking, there were some slight thudding sounds.
This town, still far from the capital, did not have enough medicinal herbs so Su Yunchu had instructed Yu Zhu and Fu Ling to go to the next county to look for them. Now, only she and Ying Li were left here in this small courtyard that she temporarily rented to save the man’s life.
His eyes were covered with a white gauze, on which there was simple medicine Su Yunchu had prepared to treat his eyes. Although not the best quality, it was better than doing nothing, but the man was considered to be temporarily blind.
Even though he had just woken up, the man’s keen senses still felt the unfamiliarity of the environment.
But because of the external as well as internal injuries, his body was still a bit weak so after struggling twice, he was still unable to sit up and could only attract Su Yunchu’s attention.
When Su Yunchu looked over, the man’s cold face, with thin lips pressed into a line, had a moment of calmness, probably recalling what happened earlier and analyzing the situation today.
This man seemed too ignorant that he was a patient! Other patients, when faced with this situation, understood that they could not move yet he was struggling! Though he was trying to get up, he must know that he was in a room but he clearly looked like he did not want to talk to her.
Doctors all had universal complaints: patients who didn’t like when they weren’t in charge.
But it couldn’t be helped, who told this patient to have such arrogant behavior.
Su Yunchu poured a cup of water, walked over to the bed and handed it to the person who was still silent, “You just woke up, drink some water first.”
She still used a cold and clear voice. The Su Yunchu of her previous life, because of her profession as a doctor, and also even more so because of her special profession as a Special Forces military doctor, had developed a calm and rational character from early on. Because of her training, she understood how to categorically make trade-offs and quickly make the best decisions in every situation.
This kind of temperament could not be completely changed even though she re-lived a lifetime and was nurtured for seven years by a scholarly family.
Therefore, her voice when she spoke with that man, in addition to detachment, had some gentleness to it due to all of the years she spent with the Song family.
However, the man did not take the cup of water in her hand, “Who are you and where is this?”
Su Yunchu didn’t answer his question, but instead said, “You have been unconscious for two days. If you don’t drink, I’m afraid your body will suffer from dehydration.”
The man paused and took the glass of water in Su Yunchu’s hand, drinking it all down in one go.
Su Yunchu was a bit shocked at this way of drinking water but she didn’t know why, and asked, “Want a second cup? “
The man’s words were brief, “One cup will suffice.”
“Where is this place? And who are you?”
“I am naturally your doctor, this is a small town in the lower part of Peng County, and you are a seriously injured patient I saved halfway.” Su Yunchu raised her eyebrows, emphasizing the three words “seriously injured patient” as she spoke, answering the man’s question.
“Thank you Miss for saving me.” After hearing this, the man’s face softened considerably, but his angular face turned more resolute. On the contrary, the softness also seemed very stiff, and the handsomeness in the rigid face and especially the thin lips, made his whole body look colder by a few points.
Su Yunchu had no intention of acknowledging this courtesy from the man, but simply told him about his physical condition, speaking objectively and pertinently, the way a proper doctor should.
“There are relatively few medicinal herbs in the closest town, so I’ve sent people to Peng County to find some medicinal herbs that are better for your body’s recovery. The trauma is not a big deal and as long as it doesn’t get infected, I believe your wounds should heal within ten days. As for internal injuries, it will take longer but you only need the usual pills for internal injuries, which I have. Right now, the more serious issue are you eyes, which are a more sensitive part of the human body. They were injured by poison and were only medicated now, so it may take over half a month to heal…”
As Su Yunchu examined the man’s wounds and changed the medicine for his eyes, she recounted these large and small wounds on his body.
The examination as well as the dressing change was naturally painful, but the man did not frown or react at all. Even when listening to Su Yunchu’s words about his injuries, he still seemed to be indifferent as if they were not his own injuries! He only nodded or hummed from time to time to indicate he was listening to Su Yunchu’s words.
This kind of atmosphere would normally make people feel a little awkward as this atmosphere was really a little weird, but the two were silent, one extremely cooperative to being treated.
When Su Yunchu had finished, the first thing the man opened his mouth to ask Su Yunchu was not a question about his body but about her. “What’s your name, Miss? Why save me?”
Su Yunchu didn’t move a muscle and said indifferently, “Surnamed Yun, I saved you because I’m a doctor.”
“Well, I’m afraid that in the upcoming days, I’ll have to bother Miss Yun.”
“Not a problem, you’re the injured and I’m the doctor, no need to talk about bothering me.”
“Miss Yun doesn’t wonder who I am? Up and down Daxin, the rumors about these eyes should have been heard.”
Su Yunchu faintly looked at him with a smile on her lips, “Who gongzi is, is none of my business. Saving gongzi is my only duty as a doctor.”
Such a sensible and calm attitude of knowing what to know and what not to know was Su Yunchu’s most natural appearance. Even though she had suspicions in her heart, she still understood that there were many things that she didn’t need to know and didn’t need to understand.
The man was also a little surprised at Su Yunchu’s attitude, but more so, he was amazed. After all, having never seen such a woman before, and thinking carefully about the rivers and lakes, had never heard of such a person appearing before, but clearly understood that Su Yunchu did not want to say more and did not have further questions.
He could only say, “Then, thank you, Miss Yun.”
Su Yunchu smiled lightly, “This place is suitable for gongzi to recover, the people who went out to look for medicine two days ago should return today so if gongzi needs to go out and contact others, feel free to do so, but if it’s not urgent, it’s better to do so after two days.”
“Mm.” The man had no objections.
“The room here is reserved for gongzi, if there is any other need, I will be next door so gongzi should rest first.”
Saying that, Su Yunchu had exited the room and closed the door behind her, leaving the man alone inside.
The man did not lie down to rest in accordance to what Su Yunchu advised, still leaning on the bed, his posture actually somewhat lazy and idle. His eyes were covered by white cloth, making it impossible to distinguish his appearance, but the thin lips at this time were lightly curved upwards in a thin and cool smile.
in this novel, they use a ‘points’ to describe things which is similar to how we use like ‘he looked several shades paler’ so it’d be ‘several points paler’ or whatever
