Things had been tense recently.

The aristocrat got murdered and many people were reported to be missing.

Not only that, there was this tense air in the castle too.

I hate it. All I can do is act like I don’t notice it!

A familiar figure appeared in the hallway.

“There you are, Lu. We need to talk. Come with me.”

And I got spotted by General Sia! I’ve got a bad feeling about this one!

General Sia beckoned me into a small room.

Oh no. A private talk could only mean it was something he didn’t want others to hear. I prayed for it to be just a talk about green peppers.

General Sia and I sat on opposite sides of a table. My prayers were ignored as usual. He rested his chin on his hand and sighed.

“Things have been tense recently,” he said.

“Oh, I was just thinking the same thing.”

“Yeah. It’s because a civil war’s about to begin.”

“Um… what?”

“Lucky you, Lu. You finally get proper work befitting a general.”

You mean like commanding on a battlefield? That, that doesn’t make me happy at all!

The king, whose name I forgot, governed this country, but the real ruler was the violent princess.

Her relatives hated her, as although she was capable, she was young and had that personality.

Those relatives had been trying to change the ruler from the violent princess to someone else… which was bringing about a civil war.

Ugh, don’t make us go through this! Just because you politicians don’t have to fight on the battlefield!

Our loss is guaranteed if I took command! I’d surrender! And get the death penalty when I return!

Thinking about the possible future made me depressed.

“Good luck on your first battle,” General Sia said.

The care in his voice was nonexistent. General, everyone has their strengths and weaknesses… it’s a mistake to make me lead troops.

I’d honestly be useless in a war though. What should I do…

“You look like you want to run. You can if you want.”

“I can?”

“No, you can’t.”

“Which is it!?”

“Hm, then shall we consult Princess Iris? We could make you fight by yourself as an assassin or something.”

“Yeah, I’d much prefer that… uh, I mean, gujaaaa!”

“Where did that come from? You surprised me.”

I was the one who got surprised! To the point that I screamed a word I never wanted to think about!

General Sia shouldn’t know my past job though. Has he looked into me like Vyro did?

I examined the general’s face.

General Sia tilted his head with a blank look. Looks like it was just a suggestion.

“Were you actually an assassin?”

“Gujaaa!”

“I always wondered why you moved so weirdly and why you were so strong. No wonder. Wow.”

“Wait, please, just wait.”

“Then I’ll go tell her Highness now.”

“I said wait!”

If the violent princess finds out, it’s over for me! Probably!

I waved both hands in a panic. General Sia seemed to understand as he sat back down.

Phew, good things that’s over with. That was dangerous.

Maybe it was better to just reveal the truth here. I raised my right hand.

“It might sound ironic coming from me, but using an assassin in these situations usually makes things worse.”

“Huh.”

“The other side will know we did it, and it’ll only make the problem harder to solve. Using an assassin will weaken them temporarily, and maybe even drive them away. But it will definitely come back to bite us later.”

I had done it in the past for work, but it rarely made the situation better.

Assassination had always been a short term solution anyway, so it couldn’t be helped.

When someone dies, people can come to terms with it, or not, depending on the way they died. Death by assassination for most was the latter. Of course it was; no one would even know who did it.

And that discontent will burst into a bigger problem somewhere else, later down the line.

So, I couldn’t recommend using an assassin. But of course, that was just my opinion.

I couldn’t tell if General Sia understood, as he just repeated the phrase, ‘oh, I see’ at random intervals. Eventually, he gave up on talking to the violent princess and left the room. He also reminded me to practice leading troops.

Oh, I forgot about that! What should I do!? Tina, help me!

I always asked my knowledgable cat when I was in trouble. I didn’t have many friends after all!

But when I came home and asked her, Tina pondered with a serious face.

Then, leaving me with a pot of dinner, she left the house and didn’t return until the next day.

Ugh! What’s happening!

Also, General Sia had forgotten about our talk the next day. Same old, same old General Sia!
