I technically worked for the castle as a general.
Obviously, I had superiors and subordinates, and it was impossible to defy orders from superiors.
So why did all my superiors have to have annoying personalities…?
My body was still, one knee on the ground. I couldn’t move.
Why, you ask? Because a vase was on my head and a princess was arranging flowers in it!
Why… why did this happen? Didn’t I come for a meeting?
“Mezud seems to have made up his mind. Maybe out of hate for me, or maybe he let his greed take over. Either way, this won’t end peacefully.”
The violent princess continued arranging white flowers in the vase on my head. She looked around the civil officials and officers attending the meeting.
Oh, Mezud, the person the violent princess just mentioned, is one of her relatives who’s trying to overthrow the current king and take over the throne.
He’s an enemy, basically. I don’t think I’m allowed to call him an enemy yet though.
“There have been reports that Mezud and his group have assembled magicians from other countries to oppose us. He’s a fool to abandon God’s teachings for the throne.”
She was right. Even if he became king by using magicians, the citizens would not follow him.
Magic was banned because of this country’s religion and almost everyone in this country was religious.
But beating the violent princess without magic would be impossible… where lied the problem.
I wanted to nod but I couldn’t move my head.
Come to think of it, Vyro started smirking at me. What’s happening to the vase?
Anyway, I’m useless in these meetings! So let me out already!
I peeked up at Princess Iris… oh no. Our eyes met. It’s over.
As I prepared myself for death, the violent princess grinned and ordered a court lady to move the vase away. Yes! I’m saved!
“Anyhow, make sure the army is prepared to deploy at any time,” she said. “Lu, raise your head.”
“Yes.”
And when I raised my head, she impaled my nostrils with flowers. Aargh! It hurts!
Why? Why would you do this!? And whoever just burst out laughing right now, you better watch it!
The violent princess watched as my eyes watered, unable to move, and thrust another flower into my nostril.
“Watch out for Mezud and his group, but be extra careful against the woman by his side. I hear she’s very capable.”
Bet she couldn’t stab my nostrils as well as you do, your Highness.
Ugh, this country sucks! Bullying sucks!
I’m about to start bawling any minute now!
After the meeting was over, I pulled out the thick flower stalks and found blood on the tips.
Damn. I must’ve looked so stupid. Should’ve worn my mask today.
But as I tried to leave the room, Vyro beckoned me over. Another cleaning request?
“Lu, her Highness is calling for you.”
“Oh, my stomach suddenly started hurting.”
“That’s no good. Why don’t you get her Highness to gouge out your stomach for you?”
“I’d die if she did that.”
I know, okay? I can’t defy my superiors, I know!
I wish they were kinder to me. One of these days you guys will break me!
My struggles were in vain as we headed to the princess’ room. Princess Iris ordered everyone to leave once she saw me.
Uh, why is it just the two of us? I’m scared. I hope she’s not gonna torture me to death.
The princess, who I will reluctantly admit looked, looked, like a graceful beauty, crossed her legs and looked at me with those arrogant eyes.
“Luvenis, do you know why the previous king died?”
Huh? What?
Someone told me about this recently though. Um, uhh… Vyro! Vyro told me about it!
But should I tell her? Now I understand why she made the others leave.
I stammered out the word.
“A, a witch…”
“Exactly. The previous king kept a witch at his side, who killed him. Although, many insist that wasn’t true.”
“…”
There was said to be five witches on this continent.
One of them was Tina. Another was Lucia. I didn’t know the other three.
Of course, I didn’t know which witch was involved with the previous king either.
But why was she talking to me about this?
I stayed silent. Princess Iris went on without a smile.
“The blonde that Mezud keeps by his side is apparently the same witch. If that’s true, she’s heavily underestimating us. That witch is trying to make this country her toy for two generations in a row.”
I had never seen the violent princess get angry.
She was always smiling or expressionless as she conducted her violence. She was like that when she would bully me or punish me too.
But at that moment, she was seething with pure anger. Her ice-cold eyes pierced me.
“Luvenis, you’re incompetent on the battlefield, correct? Nothing would change even if you were there, correct?”
“Indeed…”
“But if I drag that woman out; if I throw her in front of you,” she paused. “Can you kill her?”
Witches were not humans.
In this country, I was probably the most aware of how powerful and irrational their existence was.
But… that witch isn’t Tina, right?
Then…
“I can kill her.”
“Then I order you. Kill her.”
“As you wish.”
It was probably a top-secret order.
I couldn’t tell anyone and no one would understand if I told them
Who would’ve thought I had to accept a task like this after quitting my old job.
That was the day I came to understand the irony of human life.
But I couldn’t defy my superiors. And I couldn’t leave this witch alone.
I didn’t want to die, but I had to do it.
When I came home, I surprised Tina by telling her about this.
Turns out she had been looking into this witch too. And apparently, it wasn’t Lucia.
Am I gonna die!? Why are you so heavy-spirited? But Tina said she had been preparing to fight.
I decided to fight alongside my housemate.
I’d rather never have to do it though!
