“Are you ever afraid of your former colleagues catching you?” asked my cat housemate.

It must’ve been concerning to live with someone who could be on a wanted list.

I mulled it over before replying to Tina, who sat by the window.

“I don’t think they could even find me. I never showed them my face.”

“Don’t tell me… you kept that mask on all day, every day?”

“Yup.”

Tina stared at me, astonished.

Don’t look at me like that… her face showed disbelief, but also pity for my very existence.

I don’t deserve to be treated like this. And doesn’t this go both ways for us?

“Why’d you ask? And you’re the witch here, so you should be the one worried about getting caught.”

“I won’t get caught.”

“Oh, really?”

“I’m stronger than all of my pursuers. I could kill any of them. The very act of trying would be a waste of their lives.”

“Okay, geez, I get it!”

God, she’s scary. I mean, I knew she was, but she’s really scary. I’m not one to talk though.

I took off my mask and let my hair flow.

“Another thing is they’re not gonna spend that much effort on a single assassin. Even in our missions, we’re only told who our target is, and no other information is given. We’re just tools to them.”

Not like that made it any better, but it meant we weren’t worth enough for them to hunt us down and silence us.

“Oh,” Tina said, indifferently. “That’s fine then.”

“Did something happen?”

“No, but someone suspicious-looking has been watching us for a while.”

“Huh?”

Say that from the start then. What was the point of our conversation up till now?

I peered through the window. Someone was definitely watching us, but I didn’t recognise their face.

Tina must’ve made us invisible with magic, as they didn’t react to our obvious gawking.

That suspicious-looking man was young, with no striking features, wearing unremarkable clothes. However…

“He’s definitely not the bearer of good news.”

“That’s why I thought he was one of your people.”

“Stop, you’re making me sad.”

Wow, they actually sent someone after me. But he looks weaker than I am… hmm.

I pondered for a moment.

“Alright, let’s catch him.”

“See you later.”

It was just like her to instantly wish me farewell. I headed to the backdoor, alone, as Tina had no intention of moving from the window.

I walked right around the block and caught the man from behind to find out why he had been staring at our house. Turned out to be quite simple.

“He said he was looking for you,” I said.

“What?”

Tina scowled at the fainted man on the floor—a soldier wannabe who likes girls thirteen or under.

She seldom went outside, but he spotted her hanging the laundry and wanted to break into our house. Terrific.

The more I told her what I found out about him, the more Tina’s pretty face contorted. The word ‘rage’ was not enough to describe her emotions. I’m scared, man, get me out.

The witch, whose actual age was 26, finally got up from the chair by the window and looked down on the man. She reached out her white hand towards him.

“I think I’ll erase him.”

“You decided on killing him way too fast!”

“I won’t kill him. I’ll simply destroy his personality.”

“That sounds a little better but it’s still no good!”

“Well, aren’t you fussy? I’ll just tamper with his mind and dump him somewhere. I wouldn’t want him to hurt other people.”

“Ugh.”

Sorry man, can’t help you here. I mean, you were waiting for a chance to break into our house so you got what you deserve.

Thus, I watched the witch bind the criminal with magic shackles and dump him out.

“Tina, I’ll take care of the people that come after me. So leave them alone.”

“Only if I don’t see them. Then, I’ll handle it myself.”
