Light pushed its way through the darkness as I blinked away the weight of my eyelids.
Ugh, I’m sleepy. I used to stay up all night, no problem, but the difficulty ramped up recently. I’ve gotten old.
On lookout from the branch of a tall tree, I stifled a yawn. A black cat slept next to me, curled up with her tail wrapped around. How do you not fall?
I forced her to accompany me though, so I didn’t complain.
Who’s the guy that was like, ‘yeah, this is perfect for you, Lu,’ and handed me this weird job!? Don’t put me in charge of all the annoying jobs!
This time, I had to exterminate slave dealers and rescue the slaves.
Apparently, some guy kidnapped girls from villages to sell them in other countries.
This wasn’t a rare occurrence, but there was a report that some of the kids died, so our scary princess ordered us to kill all the slave traders. When I say ‘us’, I just mean ‘me’ though! Why was this mission only assigned to me!? What’re you gonna do if I die fighting all these guys?
Her Highness informed me the slave traders pass this meadow, which is why I was on the lookout all night.
The darkness served as my aid against multiple people, but morning had come. What should I do if they don’t come?
But as I was deep in thought, a person came running out of the forest on the other side of the meadow.
“Oh, that’s gotta be one of them.”
Wait, isn’t that a kid? Did I get the wrong guy?
I squinted, trying to get a closer look, when another figure appeared from the forest, this time an adult man. He chased after the child and caught them by their neck. Then, without any hesitation, punched the child down.
“What… the hell.”
The words slipped out, but I needed no explanation. The man was a slave trader chasing after an escapee.
As proof of that, the man dragged on the child’s ragged clothes, back to a group that was now all out of the forest.
In total, they numbered… maybe 20 people? Most of them were the kidnapped children, so I could take care of the rest.
I kept an eye on them and reached out to my side.
“Tina, wake up.”
I reached out to shake her awake, but she brushed off my hand. It startled me, so I turned to see Tina already in her human form, perched on the branch.
With eyes as dark as the black of night, she watched the slave traders, her gaze as cold as a graveyard.
Tina let out a soft sigh. “You said we could kill all of them, right?”
“Yeah, but you—”
“I’m off.”
Listen to meeee!
She leapt, not worried about the height, and ran towards the group in the meadow. From the front!? Hey, wait for me!
The enemies noticed Tina straight away as the sky was already bright. One of them blew a whistle. Don’t get caught up in her appearance, or else your head will fall. Oh, there goes her dagger into your head.
Once the first man fell, the others drew their swords. But by then, Tina had jumped into their circle with her two daggers.
How hotheaded are you!? I threw a thin dagger and pulled out another one, this time thicker. Then I lunged at a guy preoccupied with Tina and sliced through his throat. Fresh blood soaked the grass in the morning sun.
“Who are you guys!?”
Don’t ask me, I don’t have an answer for you.
No point asking anyway, since you’re gonna die. It is what it is.

Thanks to the cat’s rampage, we exterminated them without much difficulty.
The witch put the kids to sleep and manipulated their memories.
Tina covered her mouth and yawned. “I’m going home now, so take care of the rest.”
“By myself!?”
“It’s morning, I’m sure someone will come. I’m going back to sleep.”
Tina disappeared, giving me no chance to stop her. Heeey! Curse you, you heartless girl!
She wouldn’t get so angry if she really was heartless, though…
Witches were an existence feared by all, but in my eyes, she was just another weirdo.
