The cruellest thing a superior could do was ask for the impossible and then forget about it. Maybe it was on purpose. Better not be on purpose.

I had fallen in both body and spirit—heartbroken and crushed—but I got promoted the next day.

Of course I did; the other generals had remembered! It wasn’t one of General Sia’s random whims!

The other generals reluctantly told General Sia, ‘we’ve seen his strength, so we’ll accept him,’ but General Sia asked, ‘what are you talking about?’ This always happens so they weren’t surprised though!

And thus, here I was, kneeling in the audience room wearing a formal dress. I’m really scared.

What scared me was not the row of generals or the civil officials, but the woman standing in front of the throne. Please stop smirking like that. It’s a waste of your pretty face, your Highness.

She held the ceremonial sword in both hands… with the eyes of a murderer. Uh, I don’t think a princess should look at people like that.

When I heard the princess would appoint the new general on behalf of His Majesty, I made a declaration!

Like a real man, I mustered up the words, “I don’t want to be a general anymore!” But it was too late. Of course it was.

People encouraged me, saying, ‘prepare yourself,’ or ‘just know we’ll be there for you on your deathbed,’ and I couldn’t tell if I was about to be promoted or if I was about to die. I was forced to change and now here I was…

And could you guys remove this huge iron ball chained to my ankles? This must be the only country that would put this on someone being promoted to general.

I saw Vyro holding in his laughter from the corner of my eye, but I pretended not to see him for my own sake. One day I’ll make you change places with me!

“Luvenis, raise your head,” the princess said.

Her voice was composed. Just hearing this voice, you might think her Highness was mature for her age. You might! Emphasis on might!

But raising my head was the last thing I wanted to do!

However, only death would await if I didn’t raise my head. I reluctantly looked upwards, meeting eyes with the vi-violent princess.

Princess Iris grinned. That smile was one she often cast to royalty from other countries. The one she made when she was looking down on them inside.

“In recognition of your achievements, His Majesty bestows the rank of general on you. Continue dedicating yourself for our country.”

“Yes, even at the cost of this trivial life.”

So please don’t kill me for fun. Please.

Following the tradition, Princess Iris slowly pulled the sword out of the scabbard. I wish you didn’t need to take it out. Then, she presented the sword to me, holding it with both hands.

“Oops,” she said.

“Holy!”

That, that was too close! I looked to my side and saw the sword stabbed, uh, I mean, dropped on the marble floor. Geez, it must’ve been razor-sharp to pierce through the ground from just a drop! You idiot! Don’t ‘tch’ me, just give me the sword already, please! Quick!

I received the sword—snatching it with both hands—that was proof of my rank as general. I hurriedly thanked her and returned to the lowest seat of the generals… but I couldn’t! Because this damn iron ball was too heavy!

Who brought in a binding for criminals ‘in case Lu escapes’!? I’ll get revenge after this!

However, the violent princess had no intention of attacking a fleeing enemy. Th-thank you. Something told me the danger was only just beginning though.

Her Highness looked at everyone and said, “As for the rest of you, I expect you all to keep up the good work. You never know what might happen,” in a clear voice.

Everyone in the room bowed in response to their resolute master’s words.

She looked like a proper princess for once.

They say that after the previous king died a mysterious death without any heirs, the reason his uncle—the present king—ascended to the throne, was because of Princess Iris’ talent. Apparently, this reckless princess was a military genius. They say she’s a superior tactician to any of our generals.

It’s just her personality that’s a huge problem! I wish she would learn from her younger sister who’s said to be very lovely—though I’ve never met her.

This woman always slashes or fires an arrow at me. What goes on in her mind?

As I was unable to return to my seat, I kept my head down in front of Princess Iris, and she began slapping the back of my head with something. What was she hitting me with? It didn’t hurt but the sound was unpleasant, like a gooey, squelching noise.

“Lu, just because you’re a general now, you can’t let your guard down. Your life could be in danger at any moment.”

You’re the danger to my life, and I would never let my guard down around you!

Princess Iris stopped hitting me and turned back. The rustle of clothes trailed off.

“You may return now. Good work,” she said, her voice becoming distant.

I raised my head. The violent princess walked towards the door at the back with her elegant azure dress on… hm? She wasn’t holding anything.

Then what was she hitting my head with before? It couldn’t have been her hand, right?

When I timidly touched the back of my head, I took off some slimy green stuff stuck on my hair.

… No for real, what is this!? Someone, please tell me!

After finally being freed from the iron ball, I heard someone call my name in the castle hallway.

Hell yeah! It’s Miss Dyna’s voice!

“Lu, I heard you became a general. Congratulations.”

“Thank you very much!”

You’re the only one I’ve felt happy hearing that from! My Goddess! Everyone else said it while suppressing their laughter!

Miss Dyna looked so lovely she could kill a man, panting with her cheeks red from having run towards me. Oh, bliss. 90% of the reason why I got promoted was to see this smile!

She handed me something from behind her back.

“Congratulations. I got you a present,” she said.

She pulled out spring onions… and not just one, but three, spring onions. Why?

“I know you love them. I only heard you got promoted today, so I could only prepare three, but… by tomorrow I could get you ten.”

“Three is plenty! Man, I’m so happy!”

“Really? I’m happy you’re happy.”

I couldn’t call myself a man if I told her I hated spring onions! So I gladly accepted them. I was crying inside though.

I handed the spring onions to Tina in silence. She stared at me with her black eyes, just like a cat. Her mouth opened and closed several times but no words came out.

Seeing you make that face is pretty funny. Ah, what a tiring day.
