The Second Exam

Chapter Courtesy: Wang Mei

During Huo Cheng’s previous life, he had seen Shen Wanying’s Weibo post regarding the field trip. In fact, there wasn’t anything special about the short post. He only recalled it because she didn’t update her Weibo for a whole month after that.

Just as he thought about reaching out with a personal message to check in on her, Shen Wanying had finally updated her Weibo. In the new post, she had shared that she had been injured for a while and was recuperating at home for a whole month. At the time of the post, she was finally recovering.

She hadn’t specified what injuries she had suffered. Huo Cheng had wanted to ask her, but in the end, he felt that it wasn’t too appropriate. Eventually, he just ended up giving her post a thumbs up as a sign of support.

After they were married, Huo Cheng discovered a small scar on her back. When he’d asked, she told him that she was hurt during the field trip she had been on in the second year of high school. The wound on her back wasn’t anything serious, but unfortunately, she’d bruised her face as well.

Though the scratch on her face wasn’t too deep, the area was a bit large, especially after it began to scab. It only looked scarier with time. Shen Wanying didn’t want to go out sporting such an appearance, let alone go to school.

She’d carefully focused on healing at home for about a month and made sure to take good care of her face. Fortunately, there weren’t any scars after the scab had fallen off and her complexion had slowly returned to normal. It was probably thanks to all the nourishment she’d given to her face the entire month. On the other hand, the wound on her back had left a small scar. Since most people wouldn’t have the chance to see it, she didn’t treat it with as much care as her face.

Huo Cheng had all the information needed to figure out what had happened during the trip, but he didn’t know the specific time Shen Wanying had gotten injured. Based on her description, she fell from a tree, sprained her foot, and fell once more on her way back.

The field trip was only a day trip and he didn’t think she would go out to climb a tree at night. So, he reckoned, as long as he kept his eyes on her during the day, he could prevent her from getting hurt as she had before.

“As everyone knows, the third-year students won’t have any more field trips. So, this will be our last field trip. I hope everyone will be able to participate in all aspects of the activities.”

Shen Wanying’s voice at the front of the class pulled him back from his thoughts.

“It’ll be the same as last year. We will have to cook our own lunch since Starlight Farm will only provide ten dishes at noon and it definitely won’t be enough for everyone to eat. All those who can cook, please be sure to actively take part in helping out in the kitchen. For those who can’t cook, there will be cultural performances that you can participate in the evening; you can head to the Cultural Committee to sign up.”

As she finished her speech, one student loudly called out, “The dry pot fish that Ji Yao made last time was delicious. I’ve been craving it for about a year, and now it’s finally time!”

As some people started excitedly conversing, others rushed to join the lively discussion. “Yes, that fish was really delicious. This time Ji Yao should make it for everyone!”

All of the students looked over at Ji Yao, who was still busy solving his practice exam questions. Without even lifting his head, he replied coldly, “No, there are important exams to take next week. I don’t want to be distracted.”

All of their classmates looked at him speechlessly.

“——”

Don’t… Usually, you can get first place when you don’t even try (not counting last time). Studying so much, whose score do you want to beat?!

Many people’s eyes fell on the main culprit, Huo Cheng.

Shen Wanying gave a light cough to draw everyone’s attention back to her. “We won’t force you to do it. It’s voluntary for everyone to participate.”

Another student laughed and spoke out, “It doesn’t matter. If the worst comes to worst, we learned how to cook hot pot in Class 7 last time.”

Cooking hot pot is indeed the easiest way. Shen Wanying filed this as an alternative. If there aren’t enough people to cook, we will do hot pot. “For the students who didn’t participate last time, I hope you can participate enthusiastically from now on until next Friday. That’s all for today, everyone can leave.”

The students quickly walked out of the class as the school had finally ended. In the blink of an eye, there were only a few people left in the classroom.

Shen Wanying started packing up her things as she noticed Huo Cheng hadn’t left yet. “Huo Cheng, can you cook?”

Huo Cheng nodded. “Mm.”

After he got married to Shen Wanying, he cooked whenever he had time, so he knew her tastes very well.

Hearing him say this, she cheerfully said, “Then, would you like to cook on the field trip? I think since you just transferred here, you still aren’t too familiar with our classmates. This field trip is a good opportunity for you to blend with the other students.”

Huo Cheng didn’t care whether he could get along with his classmates. But, since he wanted to support Shen Wanying’s hard work, he casually responded, “I can do it.”

“That’s great!” Recently, Shen Wanying had found out that Huo Cheng was cold on the outside but surprisingly quite warm on the inside. Unexpectedly, he was also pretty easy to talk to. “You can prepare about three dishes. There should be other students who will take part in cooking, so when the time comes, everyone can discuss how to get it done.”

“Ok.” Huo Cheng thought for a bit before asking her, “Then can you be my assistant?”

Shen Wanying: “Do you need me to help you cook in the kitchen? When I said I can cook, I meant it. Though I’m not very good at it. So, don’t despise me.”

Huo Cheng: “I won’t. It’s settled then.”

Shen Wanying: “Okay. Do you still want to perform?”

Huo Cheng: “——”

“I’m joking,” Shen Wanying laughed. It was a little hard for her to imagine Huo Cheng putting on a show.

The upcoming field trip was more or less affecting the students’ mood to learn, but nobody could escape the exam.

Two days before the field trip, the current semester’s second monthly exam pulled open its heavy curtain. Owing to the results of the last exam, Huo Cheng had leapt in class ranking and been directly promoted from the last examination room to the first.

The top forty students from all years were in this examination room. In the past, Ji Yao was always sitting in the first row. But now, it was Huo Cheng sitting there.

Ji Yao sat behind the other and silently turned the pen in his hand. The two men hadn’t exchanged any words, yet it seemed that there were invisible sparks in the air. The other students in the examination room didn’t dare to speak loudly.
