Time for Him to Review His Personal Associations
Because Fang Yichang and his family were particularly concerned about his situation, they were also the first to receive the news. At that very moment, Fang Yichang was at lunch with Huo Cheng and the others. By then, the news about the cheating accusations had made its way to the rest of the school. Officially, the school was still investigating, but since the rumours spread, the students believed what they heard. And so it was the general opinion of the public that Fang Yichang had really done it.
At lunch, the students pointed at and whispered behind Fang Yichang’s back. If not for the fact that his presence in school meant that no one dared provoke him to his face, he would’ve drowned in the chatter and slander that poured forth their lips.
When the investigation turned up the teacher who had leaked the questions, Fang Yichang’s family informed him of the news over the phone. After he hung up, his relief was palpable. “They found the teacher who leaked the questions. Now that the task force is dealing with him, we should get an explanation soon!”
“Aren’t you afraid the teacher will point their finger at you too?” Zhao Yimeng asked.
Fang Yichang pooh-poohed. “There’s no bad blood between her and me, why on earth would she want to harm me?”
“If you say so. Well, let’s hope this gets resolved quickly. We’ve got the re-test this week after all, so everyone’s on the edge.”

The teacher from High School 2 that the investigation had turned up was called Tong Wenjing, a young lady who had taught at High School 2 for barely a year. Her position and reputation were excellent, and she was warm and friendly to her colleagues and students alike. So this revelation came as quite a surprise to her coworkers.
The task force members asked her a few questions. She didn’t do as Zhao Yimeng had predicted, and instead remained silent in the face of the questions posed at her.
Her silence meant that the investigation had, once again, hit a wall. And even more unexpectedly, someone had come out to say that they had once seen Tong Wenjing conspiring secretively with Fang Yichang.
Because of this accusation, the latter was once again summoned to the principal’s office.
Mr. Ji was also present for this meeting, and upon seeing Fang Yichang, asked him, “Do you know Miss Tong Wenjing from High School 2?”
“Nope,” he denied. “How would I know the teachers from High School 2?”
Mr. Ji stared at him in silence for several moments, then said, “Now there’s someone saying they saw you and Miss Tong together, acting like you both had something to hide.”
“???” Now Fang Yichang really wanted to hit someone. “Was it Wang Xu again? Is he even reliable?”
“It wasn’t Wang Xu,” Mr. Ji told him. “It was someone from our school.”
If they hadn’t been in an office, Fang Yichang would have smashed a table or two. “There are a lot of people in our school who don’t like me. And now that we have to do a re-test they’re upset about it. For all you know, someone could’ve made it up to scapegoat me.”
“This student is very reliable.”
“Reliable?” Fang Yichang stared at his teacher, the corner of his mouth curling up. “I see how it is, it must’ve been one of those high-fliers, yes?”
Mr. Ji pursed his lips and remained silent. Fang Yichang was his student, and in his heart of hearts, he believed the boy. But with the recent developments, what with everyone pointing fingers at Fang Yichang… If it turned out he was indeed innocent of the accusations, it was probably time for him to review his personal associations.
Fang Yichang stayed in the office for another twenty minutes before exiting, still fuming.
Hong Hong was leaning against the wall outside the room, waiting for him. He straightened when he saw his friend, and asked, “What’s wrong, did something happen again?”
“Someone from our school said they saw me asking Tong Wenjing amended the exam questions,” Fang Yichang replied sulkily.
“F*ck, they really know how to lie! Do you know who it was?”
“They didn’t say.” But he had a sneaking suspicion as to who it might’ve been.
Based on what Mr. Ji had told him, his accuser was probably one of the top students. They had reported seeing him and Tong Wenjing near High School 2 – which means they had either claimed to have followed him or had some reason to be near High School 2.
Fang Yichang didn’t return to his own classroom, heading to Class 2’s homeroom instead.
“Qiu Ziqing, you get your ass out here!” He strode to the door and hammered his fist on it.
The entire classroom, which had been abuzz just then, suddenly fell dead silent. The phrase used here (鸦雀无声) translates literally to “the crows and sparrows made no sound”, and is used to describe the pin-drop silence.
Qiu Ziqing blanched, startled. Wang Tingting moved over to her, murmuring something reassuring, then yelled out the door: “What are you so fierce for? Having another fit of insanity?”
Fang Yichang ignored her and walked straight through the door of the classroom. “Qiu Ziqing, was it you who claimed you saw me asking Tong Wenjing for the exam questions? Do you have proof? Or did you only rely on your own mouth to spread rumours?”
Qiu Zijing said nothing, instinctively shrinking into the back of the class. Wang Tingting shielded her, shouting to the onlookers, “Why are you all just staring blankly? This is your own classmate he’s bullying!”
At this, the class monitor of Class 2 finally got up, asking Fang Yichang to take it up with a teacher instead, if he had any issues, instead of kicking up a fuss. Of course, Fang Yichang, in his rage, wouldn’t listen to them. He wanted answers, and he was prepared to fight the students in his way for them.
Class 1’s homeroom was next to Class 2’s, and the ruckus had not gone unnoticed. Huo Cheng and Shen Wanying had both emerged to check, and seeing Fang Yichang raise his hand against his fellow students, Huo Cheng intervened. “That’s enough.”
