Chapter 49

Hu Hao entered the county town and found it under strict martial law. "Something's not right, the devils must be up to something. I've walked right into a wolf's den!" Hu Hao said, scratching his head.

"Well, a wolf's den is a wolf's den. For the sake of my cigarettes, I have to take a chance," Hu Hao thought to himself.

Hu Hao arrived at the entrance of the only brothel in the county town and found the doors were all closed.

"Are you stupid? Damn it, when do brothels do business in the morning!" Hu Hao slapped his head and looked around. "Where should I go? Where can I find a lone devil? Damn it, I came at the wrong time today!"

Hu Hao didn't know where to find a lone devil, so he wandered around aimlessly. It was still early, so he wasn't in a hurry to go back!

He turned into a small alley and saw a vendor selling roasted chicken. Hu Hao touched his stomach and realized he was hungry.

"Why are the devils being so well-behaved today? They used to come here and harm the people. Why are they so different today? Could something big be happening?" Hu Hao muttered to himself.

Hu Hao continued down the alley and saw two devils coming towards him. He looked around and saw no one else.

"Thank you, heaven, you're really helping me out. Next time I eat roasted chicken, I'll offer some to you first," Hu Hao thought as he lowered his head, put his hands in his sleeves, and walked past the devils.

"Eight-ga, stop!" One of the devils shouted as Hu Hao deliberately bumped into him and stabbed him in the heart. The devil who was stabbed couldn't even scream, just staring blankly at Hu Hao. The other devil, seeing Hu Hao bump into his companion, cursed at him.

Hu Hao turned his head, bowed to the devil, and then suddenly grabbed his neck and delivered a heavy blow! The devil fainted immediately!

Seeing no one around, Hu Hao dragged the fainted devil to a dark corner, stripped him of his clothes, leaving only his underwear, and then pulled out the knife from the other devil and stabbed the fainted one several times in the heart.

Five minutes later, Hu Hao came out wearing the devil's uniform. He looked around and walked out, touching the two silver dollars in his pocket. "Damn, the devils don't have much loot these days. Killing two people only got me two silver dollars. I need to take another chance."

Hu Hao walked down the street, looking for his next target. Suddenly, he heard some Japanese.

"Eight-ga, why aren't you standing guard? The division commander is coming to inspect!"

Hu Hao didn't know who they were talking to, but he looked around and saw that he was the only one wandering around while the other devils were standing straight on the side of the road. Hu Hao quickly said, "Hai," and stood straight on the side of the road. The officer looked satisfied and entered the nearby devil command post.

"The division commander is coming, no wonder the devils are so active today. They must have a bigwig coming!" Hu Hao thought to himself.

"I can't let this go. The devil division commander coming to this place for an inspection can't be a good thing. He must be up to something."

Hu Hao looked around. Killing someone would be easy, but the devils had the whole town under martial law. The innermost area was guarded by devils, and the outermost area by puppet troops. He needed to figure out how to escape after the deed.

"I need to find an opportunity, I can't act recklessly," Hu Hao thought.

By noon, Hu Hao was cursing. "I've never stood guard for the Eighth Route Army, but I end up standing guard for the devils first. Fine, division commander, if I kill you later, don't blame me. It's your fault for making me do this!"

Soon, several vehicles came down the road. The lead vehicles were two large trucks, followed by two small cars, and then two more large trucks. The front and rear trucks had heavy machine guns mounted on them.

The vehicles stopped in front of the command post. The two small cars stopped right in front of Hu Hao. The local devil leaders hurried over and waited by the cars. Many devils got out of the front and rear trucks, and the two small cars opened their doors. A lieutenant general, three colonels, and several officers got out. After a brief conversation with the local devil leaders, they entered the command post.

After the devils went inside, Hu Hao looked around and saw that the devils were still standing guard.

"Are you all crazy? The heads are inside, why are you still standing here? I haven't even eaten yet."

Hu Hao didn't dare move. If he did, the devil officer would definitely come over and ask him. He decided to stand still and look for an opportunity to slip away.

After another hour, the group of devil officers came out. A colonel called out, "Form a squad to accompany the general on the inspection!"

Hu Hao saw the devils around him turn and run towards the officers, so he quickly followed.

The devil officers walked in the middle, surrounded by the devils who had come with the lieutenant general and the ones who had just arrived. Oh right, he wasn't a devil.

They arrived at the arsenal, and when the doors were opened, Hu Hao's eyes widened.

"Are you all trying to get yourselves killed? My God!" Hu Hao saw the arsenal filled with all kinds of weapons: rifles, light and heavy machine guns, and various types of artillery!

"I have to do what my brother said. The devils are planning to attack our base. I need to kill them and blow up the arsenal!" Hu Hao thought, but he didn't dare move with all the devils around. He was alone, and if he acted, it would be like suicide.

Following the devil officers into the arsenal, he heard the lieutenant general say, "Good, well-prepared. We need to strengthen the security. The 14th Division suffered a major loss at the hands of the Eighth Route Army last time. We can't let that happen to our division. Also, the offensive will start next month. You need to take good care of the supplies!"

"Hmph, take good care of them? I'll give your arsenal a fireworks show tonight!" Hu Hao thought.

The devils then went to another warehouse, which was filled with grain. Hu Hao calculated that the grain would last a division for more than two months.

Hu Hao's eyes lit up at the sight of the grain. "I have to take some back. It would be a waste to burn all this grain!"

Next, they went to the devil's camp. Hu Hao counted the number of tents and estimated the number of troops in the county. "It can house over a thousand people. The devils have indeed strengthened their defenses here!"

When the devils entered the camp, Hu Hao took advantage of a turn and the devils' inattention to slip away and hide in a tent. He didn't want to follow the devil officers around anymore; he hadn't even had lunch yet!
