After eating those boiled sweet potatoes, Hu Hao didn't want to go back to rest, so he wandered around the base by himself. The base was a small farm with about 40 households, and behind it was a large mountain. Judging by the density of the forest, it must be a deep, old forest. Hu Hao wandered around the village, and the pedestrians he encountered all looked at him with strange eyes.
"Is he out today? Usually, it's the commander who takes him out for a walk. Why is he out alone today?" Villager A said.
"Didn't you know? I heard that in the recent battle, Er Lengzi killed at least 200 devils by himself. He's a hero," Villager B said.
"What if he gets lost? The commander will have to look for him again. No, I have to follow him. Otherwise, the commander will send the whole unit to look for him again," a soldier thought.
Although Hu Hao heard everyone's discussion, he didn't care. After all, he was reborn in the body of Er Lengzi, and his name was still Hu Hao. He didn't think too much and just wandered around. After a while, he noticed that the soldier was still following him. Hu Hao stopped and asked, "Why are you following me?"
"Ah," the soldier didn't expect Hu Hao to suddenly speak.
"What are you following me for?" Hu Hao continued to ask.
"Er Lengzi, I'm afraid you'll get lost. The commander will be in a hurry to look for you," the soldier said.
"Am I going to get lost? Nonsense. Fine, you don't need to follow me. I can go back by myself," Hu Hao said impatiently, waving his hand to indicate that the soldier should go back where he came from.
"You can't get lost. You should have not gotten lost the last time you came out," the soldier thought, pouting. He continued to follow without paying attention to Hu Hao.
Hu Hao wandered for a while and saw that the soldier was still following him. He lost interest in wandering and said, "Alright, I'm going back now. Seriously, you guys are ruining my peace and quiet." Hu Hao turned around and started walking back.
"Ah, he really knows how to go back. It seems those rumors are true. Er Lengzi is no longer foolish, but he can't remember things," the soldier thought.
When Hu Hao returned to the courtyard, it was almost dark. He felt a bit hungry, as his stomach was empty. So, he went to find Commander Zhang again.
When he arrived at the house, he saw that a lantern had already been lit inside. Without saying much, Hu Hao walked up and asked, "Is dinner ready? I'm hungry."
"All you think about is eating. No wonder they call you Er Lengzi. You dare to yell at me, calling you Er Lengzi?" Commander Zhang looked up from the map and said when he saw Hu Hao.
"What else can I do if I'm hungry? Starve to death?" Hu Hao said不满地.
"Alright, Er Lengzi, here, this is your dinner," a soldier next to him said, handing Hu Hao a bowl of boiled sweet potatoes. It was boiled sweet potatoes again. Hu Hao looked at the sweet potatoes and scratched his head. Seeing this, Commander Zhang took an egg from his pocket and handed it to Hu Hao.
"Here, just one. Eat it," Commander Zhang said.
Hu Hao looked at Commander Zhang and then at the egg and said, "Commander, give me a knife."
"What do you mean, Er Lengzi? Commander gave you an egg, and you don't want to eat it? That egg was specially bought for you by the commander from the locals. Are you being ungrateful?" the soldier next to him said.
"What are you talking about? When did it become your turn to criticize Er Lengzi? Don't you know he's an old soldier? You were still digging the ground when he joined the army," Political Commissar Liu said from the side.
"What do you need a knife for?" Commander Zhang also glared at the soldier who spoke.
"Right, Er Lengzi, what do you need a knife for?" Political Commissar Liu asked from the side.
"To get some food. My stomach is empty. Eating sweet potatoes won't fill me up," Hu Hao said softly, knowing that Commander Zhang was good to him.
"Get your own food? What, go and steal chickens from the locals?" Commander Zhang asked.
"No, I want to go up the mountain and see if there's any game," Hu Hao said.
"You go up the mountain!? No way, I don't want to send people to look for you again," Commander Zhang said.
"Then I won't eat. Eating won't help. I might as well starve to death," Hu Hao said, pouting.
"I, I don't know what's wrong with you. Don't we have an egg?" Commander Zhang, seeing Hu Hao's reaction, didn't dare to get angry. After all, they still thought of Hu Hao as a fool. Who would argue with a fool?
"The egg is just one. You eat it," Hu Hao said.
"You," Commander Zhang supported his waist and walked back and forth in the room.
"Alright, Xiao Li, give him a knife," Commander Zhang said to the guard.
"Ah, really?" Xiao Li asked in surprise.
"Give it," Commander Zhang said, "You come back by yourself tonight. If you get lost, I won't look for you. Got it?"
Hu Hao took the bayonet from Xiao Li, weighed it in his hand, and said, "Don't worry, I'm not really foolish." Hu Hao didn't care about the reactions of the people in the room and walked out directly. It wasn't completely dark outside, and it was just in time to go to the mountains.
"Commander Zhang, is he really better?" Political Commissar Liu asked from the side.
"I don't know. He seems fine now, but he says he can't remember anything from before," Commander Zhang said.
"Xiao Li, follow him and see which direction he goes. If he doesn't come back in two hours, take a few people to look for him," Commander Zhang said.
"Ah, alright," Xiao Li said unwillingly.
"You, you're just stubborn," Political Commissar Liu pointed at him and laughed.
"Haha, what can I do? Back then, only the two of us were left alive in our village. If it weren't for him, I would have been a pile of yellow earth on the Long March. He has no parents either. Sigh," Commander Zhang smiled bitterly and shook his head.
After Hu Hao entered the mountains, he really found a lot of game, such as pheasants and wild chickens. There were quite a few of them. The environment was well protected at this time. If it were in his era, these things would have been eaten long ago.
Hu Hao easily caught two pheasants and one wild chicken. Just as he was thinking that it was enough to go back, he heard the sound of a wild boar rooting in the ground not far from the hill. Hu Hao crouched down and carefully approached. My goodness, it was at least a 300-pound wild boar.
"Damn, a big one. This forest still has this kind of thing," Hu Hao thought. He then weighed the bayonet in his hand, thinking it should be fine.
Hu Hao carefully approached. When he was a few meters away, the wild boar noticed him, looked up, and charged at him. Hu Hao wasn't afraid. He stood firm and, as the wild boar charged to him, turned and aimed at the boar's throat, bending down to stab it.
This stab made the wild boar scream and turn to charge at Hu Hao again. Hu Hao stabbed it again. By now, the wild boar had lost a lot of blood. It seemed to realize it couldn't deal with Hu Hao and tried to run away. Hu Hao chased after it.
