At Chu Jiran’s home.

It was late at night. The two were supposedly sound asleep.

Suddenly, a suppressed cry came from Bai Weijin’s room. Chu Jiran who was in a light sleep immediately woke up. He hastily got out of the bed, rushing barefooted over to see what had happened.

“Weijin, what’s wrong with you?”

In a panic, Chu Jiran turned on the lights without thinking much. What greeted him was Bai Weijin in her pajamas sat on the bed rubbing her calf.

“Jiran, you…” Bai Weijin was very surprised by his appearance. The man was often well-dressed. Seldom had he looked so untidy.

“I… I thought there’s something wrong with you. Luckily, you’re all right.” Chu Jiran rubbed his messy hair, answering with relief and some embarrassment.

“I’ll go to sleep.”

Bai Weijin stretched her calf, smiling, “Not all right. I just got a cramp in my leg. It really hurt. I didn’t mean to wake you up, sorry.”

Bai Weijin was apologetic about disturbing Chu Jiran once again. She never expected she would be so troublesome one day.

“Cramp? How did it happen?” Chu Jiran gave her a worried look. He sat at the bedside with a frown, reaching out one hand to check her leg but withdrawing it halfway.

This was he, restrained and self-controlled.

Wearing her hair in a loose braid, Bai Weijin looked graceful and attractive in the dim light. Chu Jiran couldn’t take his eyes off her. This was the first time that Bai Weijin appeared before him in this way, totally different from how she looked in the day.

At this moment, they seemed to be… very close. He could even hold her in his arm without moving.

Bai Weijin gave an embarrassed cough, spoiling the charged atmosphere.

“I did a search, and it says it’s normal for pregnant women. So, you don’t have to worry.”

Chu Jiran just gave a nod, for fear that Bai Weijin would sense his husky voice. He took a deep breath, marshalled his thoughts and turned his head to ask her.

“You didn’t eat any food this evening. Are you hungry?”

Bai Weijin was a little embarrassed. She did feel hungry. Since her pregnancy, she had a poor appetite for regular meals, while from time to time she would long for some snack foods.

In order not to interrupt Chu Jiran, she kept repressing the urge.

Now he asked the right question.

Chu Jiran saw at a glance what she was thinking about, saying, “It’s okay. Whatever you want, you can tell me. You are pregnant now, and I have a duty to take good care of you.”

Bai Weijin answered honestly, “Well, I’d like the roast duck from the Restaurant. Sorry to trouble you with it.”

“Not at all. It’s not far away from here. I’ll be back soon.” Chu Jiran got dressed and went out. Though they provided home delivery service, Chu Jiran felt it necessary to buy it himself.

Bai Weijin was moved. She didn’t know how to repay all his kindness, though she was well aware of his love for her.

She just could not return him the same affection.

…

Gu Yeze arrived home at night, only to find that his house was ablaze with lights.

‘Is she back?’

Gu Yeze opened the door with suspicion and was greeted by a group of relatives sitting inside.

“Yeze, you’ve kept us waiting.” One of them came up to greet Gu Yeze, as if he were the house owner.

Gu Yeze didn’t like such social activities. He just wondered how these people came in and what they were gonna do.

Seeing the perplexed looked on his face, these people began to introduce themselves one by one.

“Yeze, I’m your aunt. You forget me? I once held you in my arms when you were a baby.”

“Your grandmother told us to introduce a girlfriend to you. I have to say she’s asked the right person. I know several girls, all of whom are good-looking and have no complicated family background. Look, which one do you like?”

Unwilling to be outdone, the rest gathered around to show Gu Yeze the ladies they knew. As soon as they heard from Grandma Gu, these people, scornful about Bai Weijin’s imprudence, began to try their best to find candidates for Gu Yeze’s wife.

Gu family’s relatives as they were, they could hardly reach the center of power. Thus, all hoped to find favor with Gu Yeze so as to gain more profits.

If Gu Yeze took a liking to the girl he or she introduced, then the guy, as a matchmaker, would be treated with some respect.

With these calculations, those people gathered here.

Gu Yeze impatiently adjusted his tie. Dispirited, he was in no mood to deal with these people.

“I don’t need it. Please leave me alone.”

Those familiar with his disposition would know he was being nice now, yet the people present didn’t think so. ‘We’re at least your elders, how can you speak to us like this?’

“Yeze, a man always needs a wife. You can’t let Bai…”. Before he finished, Gu Yeze shot him an icy look.

He spoke slowly, “Listen, I don’t need it. For Grandma’s sake, I forgive you this time. But if you do it again, I may make you pay.”

His words carried great weight. Also, they heard about how Gu Yeze handled people these years. Though it’s embarrassing to be kicked out, no one would like to stay.

“He’s getting strange.”

“You said it! How lovable he was when he was a kid.”

Muttering under their breath, the crowd reluctantly left and took with them pictures of ladies they would have shown to Gu Yeze.

Gu Yeze went upstairs, lying in the bathtub and wearily closing his eyes.
