Since Gu Baiqi was born, Bai Weijin gave the little thing her full attention. From feeding, changing his diaper, to putting him to sleep, she did all of them by herself.
“Miss Bai”, suggested the nurse, “Now you’re getting well. Would you like to go for a stroll?”
‘Go for a stroll?’ Bai Weijin paused for a second before agreeing to her proposal. After all, she had stayed at the hospital since her delivery.
“How about the beach?” Chu Jiran said, “The scenery there is charming, and the temperature changes little in a day.”
“It agrees with babies.”
‘Take a newborn go to the beach?’ Bai Weijin fixed Chu Jiran with an astonished look. ‘Is he planning something?’
Chu Jiran looked down, unable to meet her gaze. Indeed, he was planning to steer Bai Weijin away from here.
It was said that Gu Yeze and Ji Yun were about to announce their engagement.
Despite his ignorance of where they were going to hold the ceremony, Chu Jiran knew it must be magnificent. And for now, the best choice was to take her far away.
“Well…” Chu Jiran’s voice faltered as he tried to persuade her, “I prepared a surprise for you there…”
‘He’s lying!’ Bai Weijin saw through him straight away. She sighed, “Now that you’ve decided, we go together.”
She trusted Chu Jiran, the man who had never done any harm to her.
Upon hearing that, Chu Jiran breathed a sigh of relief. He once feared, she, stubborn as a mule, would get to the bottom of it.
Fortunately, she did not.
Ji Yun’s phone rang in Gu’s House.
“My prospective daughter-in-law,” Grandma Gu asked in an amiably soft voice, “What’s up? Is there anything wrong?”
Her liking for Ji Yun was obvious.
‘I’ve told them not to call me unless it’s a real emergency.’ Ji Yun wore a thoughtful look on her face.
“Don’t worry,” she replied with a mild smile, “That’s my friend Tan Xin. She wants to know where the ceremony is to be held.”
Once she mentioned the name, Grandma Gu’s countenance changed. She gave Ji Yun a stupefied look.
Grandma Gu had known Tan Xin for over twenty years, and thus was well aware of her deep love for her grandson. Yet she voluntarily admitted defeat in competition with Ji Yun and more astonishingly, become a bosom friend with her.
All indicated how shrewd and sophisticated Ji Yun was.
Grandma Gu appeared to hesitate about their engagement. ‘If it’s the case, will Yeze be a match for her?’
She had no idea about it.
“Any recommendation, my girl?” asked Grandma Gu, “It can be a spectacular, if you want.”
Under Gu Grandma’s gaze, Ji Yun slowly opened her mouth.
“A simple one is okay, with certain number of guests.”
“All I want is but a romantic proposal of marriage by the sea.”
What she said managed to allay Grandma Gu’s suspicion, for a woman who valued love tended to have no greed for power.
“Good girl,” Grandma Gu laughed heartily, replying, “Yeze will surely give you an unforgettable proposal.”
“Got it, grandma.”
“What did you say?”
From Gu Yeze’s office came a roar with astonishment, “Grandma let me pop the question at the bay?”
“Why? Why not follow regular procedures?”
His secretary didn’t dare look him in the eye. She was told to send the message only. ‘How can I have any idea of the reason behind Mrs. Gu’s decision?’
“Mrs. Gu also said that if you behave yourself, she can help get Miss Ji out of your family business.”
Gu Yeze was now well aware of his grandma’s intent—to deny Ji Yun access to power!
Normally, union by marriage between families was accompanied by resources sharing.
Yet Grandma Gu hoped to secretly take Ji family’s resources to themselves.
‘This is really unnecessary!’ Gu Yeze thought to himself.
Though there’s some reason in her choice, Gu Yeze had a deep repugnance for such things.
Besides his unwillingness to make his marriage a publicity stunt, Gu Yeze had absolute confidence in his own strength.
‘Even if I have to share my resources, I can absolutely make those investors interested in my projects!’
He rubbed his temples. For the benefit of the whole family, Gu Yeze had no intention of rowing with his grandmother at this critical moment.
“Forget it. Go find some to decorate the beach nearest to us. The ceremony will take place in a few days.”
‘Anyway, marriage is nothing but a deal for me. I might as well do it nicely.’
Ji Yun returned home and found Tan Xin was already there.
“Are you really gonna miss the opportunity?” asked Tan coldly, “You say you have no feelings for Gu Yeze, then how do you explain it?”
“You lied to me?”
Tan Xin’s alerted look amused Ji Yun. ‘I thought you’re a smart woman.’
‘Once it comes to Gu Yeze, you seem to have lost all sense and reason.”
“I just want to lower his grandma’s guard,” Ji Yun said ambiguously, “She’s a hard nut to crack.”
“I’m much less callous than her.”
Her remarks left Tan Xin dumbfounded. “Is it the case?”
Grandma Gu’s benign smile came to mind. As far as Tan Xin could remember, she wasn’t the heartless kind but a person of high prestige among her family members.
At the sight of the expression on Tan Xin’s face, Ji Yun slightly shook her head. ‘Gu family is your natural enemy, that’s for sure.’
“You still doubt it, don’t you? If the old woman is that kind, how could she, a mistress once, make her way into Gu family? Use your brain, please.”
She was right. In most cases, powerful clans wouldn’t allow a mistress to enter into their family. The ones who could marry into a big family must have strong family background.
Therefore, Grandma Gu couldn’t have the bright side only.
“Even so, are you sure you can deal with Gu Yeze?” Tan Xin said with a sneer, “His ability is on a par with mine.”
