Bai Weijin noticed Gu Yeze sitting still on a sofa when she returned home from work.

She totally ignored him.

She walked past Gu Yeze when he opened his mouth, “There’s a banquet the day after tomorrow. You are to attend it with me.”

Bai Weijin didn’t ask him much and only said yes.

Gu Yeze waited in vain for her to say something more. A slight sneer crept over his face.

He was ready to accept her as his wife in the true sense of the word, which was the cherished desire of every woman in H City but Bai Weijin.

Who was she to give him the cold shoulder? Since Bai Weijin didn’t love him, why on earth did he stick by her?

How comical it looked!

Gu Yeze got up, picked up a car key and walked out when a gift box came into view.

Inside was the full dress he bought today for Bai Weijin, and his assistant just sent it over. Gu Yeze looked askance at the box and left the house.

Bai Weijin somehow felt a little desolate.

As she opened the gift box, a short black formal dress showed up, simple and elegant. Beside it lay a Western style suit in the same color.

Were they prepared by Gu Yeze for the banquet?

The car sped off with an almighty roar.

Bai Weijin understood why Gu Yeze was seething with anger. They lived under the same roof, and Gu Yeze was such a standout among the ordinary that she was inevitably attracted.

She thought Gu Yeze was driven by a sudden impulse. Maybe he felt a bit lonely without any sex partner.

But she was not sure how she felt about Gu Yeze now.

…

Gu Yeze shoved roughly away the woman in his arms.

As long as he wanted, there were innumerable women willing to have sexual encounters with him like this one.

Somehow, he felt sick at the touch of other women. Pushed away by Gu Yeze, the woman thought she might have done something wrong and hastened to move closer.

“President Gu…” She tried to kiss him.

Gu Yeze dodged aside, “Get lost!”

The woman would like to make a last-ditch attempt, yet his cold stare stopped her. Compared with money, life was of much greater importance.

She picked up her clothes and backed away, gently pulling the door shut behind her.

Gu Yeze lit a cigarette, and Bai Weijin’s face sprang to mind. The girl could be arrogant or coquettish. From some day on, he began to be dissatisfied with their original relations.

He hoped Bai Weijin and he could be closer, but she had been playing dumb. Clever and quick-witted, how come she didn’t know what he wanted?

Bai Weijin.

Gu Yeze stubbed out the cigarette violently.

…

Gu Yeze had been away from home for two days, and Bai Weijin didn’t meet him in Gu’s Group. In such a big company, you could barely run into one if you didn’t call on him or her.

“Sister Bai, what are you thinking about?” One big face abruptly appeared before Bai Weijin.

Bai Weijin was deep in concentration, and the sudden appearance of Zhang Lanxin startled her.

“What’s with you, Sister Bai? You’ve been in a trance recently.” Since Bai Weijin took up her post at Gu’s Group, she had been exceptionally vigorous in work and was spoken highly of by everyone in the company.

Seldom did she make a mistake in her work.

Bai Weijin shook her head, “Just a little tired. What’s up?”

Zhang Lanxin winked at her, “President is waiting for you at the door. I come to tell you that.”

Gu Yeze? How come?

She hadn’t seen him for two days. Whenever there was some work to be done, he always sent his assistant on an errand.

Bai Weijin gave an embarrassed cough and feigned seriousness, “Mind your own business! Go out and pay attention to your work.”

Zhang Lanxin left her office in dismay.

It was time to call it a day. Bai Weijin tidied her stuff away and walked out. Gu Yeze was at the door as Zhang Lanxin said.

“What’s the matter?” She opened her mouth in a somewhat awkward manner.

Bai Weijin had been turning over their quarrel in mind but reached no conclusion. She had no idea whether to have a relationship with Gu Yeze after having witnessed Bai Hongbo and her mother’s failed marriage.

Bai Weijin believed in neither marriage nor love. The nominal marriage with Gu Yeze was an ideal one for her, and it would be best if they went on like this.

Gu Yeze didn’t look at her and only said indifferently, “I come to take you to change clothes and put on makeup. We’ll attend a banquet this evening.”

Bai Weijin suddenly remembered that she had promised him to attend it a few days earlier. The banquet was to be held in two hours, and Bai Weijin dared not delay, “Let’s go.”

Gu Yeze gave her a glance and kept pace with her.

Make-up artists and stylists had been waiting for them in the studio.

Bai Weijin didn’t try on the dress the day she fell out with Gu Yeze. She changed into the evening wear after an assistant fetched it for her, to find that the well-tailored gear fitted her very well.

Gu Yeze was smartly dressed, sitting next to her.

“What a perfect match you are!” The stylist considered their dress to be lovers’ clothes tailor-made for them.

In fact, Gu Yeze did give instructions like this.

How ironic! Gu Yeze gave a sneer, frightening the stylist to death. The man realized immediately that he had fawned on the important client the wrong way.

Bai Weijin pretended not to hear it.

Both the make-up artists and the stylists were highly skilled, and there were two assistants giving a hand. In fewer than two hours, Bai Weijin managed to wear an exquisite make-up.

Her look won general acclaim. People around her praised Bai Weijin to the skies.

“Mrs. Gu, what a good figure you have! The dress really sets off your hourglass shape.”

“That’s right. With smooth and fair skin, you look absolutely stunning, even without the makeup.”

Brazen as she was, Bai Weijin felt a little embarrassed by so much praise.

Gu Yeze fixed his eyes on her in a thoughtful manner.

They finally got in the car when everything was done. After a while, Bai Weijin’s murmur broke the silence, “Where have you been these days?”

“That’s my business, Mrs. Gu.”

She intended to lighten the atmosphere but was met with a cold shoulder. Bai Weijin shut up and remained silent.

The way he said “Mrs. Gu” was particularly ironic.

The dinner party was going on.

Gu Yeze and Bai Weijin arrived late, and all eyes were on these two good-lookers.

Formerly Bai Hongbo rarely took Bai Weijin to a banquet, and Bai Weijin also didn’t care what her father thought. Consequently, she only knew a fraction of people in the high society.

Though their wedding had hit the headlines in H City, not all of the dignitaries’ families were invited. They could only watch the couple on television.

Many of the ladies, young and elderly, were eager to catch a glimpse of Bai Weijin.

Now they, staring at Bai Weijin, felt a twinge of envy and even hate, but nobody wouldn’t admit that the woman was a great beauty.

Her beauty was exquisite features, flawless skin and unflappable temperament all rolled into one. No man present could take his eyes off her.

She and Gu Yeze were like well-matched celestial beings.
