No doubt that Gu Yeze was in the limelight, and everyone present went all out to butter him up. What they said was no more than seeking further cooperation or praising his beautiful wife.
Bai Weijin didn’t feel like listening to those wily old birds bullshit. She nodded a polite greeting and went for a stroll.
“You, Bai Weijin?” Bai was having some dessert when a mellifluously girlie voice came by her ear.
Bai Weijin turned his head to look at her. The girl appeared in a pale yellowish full-length dress with long wavy hair.
Ah, here came one that tried to pick on her!
Bai Weijin made no reply and only buried herself in a wide variety of cakes before the woman continued.
“Hey, are you deaf or dumb? I’m talking to you!”
The woman was called Zhang Ranran, a big star in the entertainment world. With a sexy figure and good looks, she had a large number of fans and was in favor with some big shots.
Seeing Bai Weijin completely ignore her, Zhang Ranran flew into a rage.
Bai Weijin had seen a great many such brainless but swollen-headed women who, nevertheless, were easy to deal with. So, she didn’t think much and answered her back, “Watch your mouth! A filthy mouth can’t utter decent language.”
Seething with rage, Zhang Ranran was gonna swear at Bai Weijin when a person in a well-pressed suit greeted her eyes. Her arrogance instantly went away. She spoke in a soft voice:
“I know you take offence at what happened between Yeze and me. Believe me, I’ll disappear in front of you and won’t see him from now on.”
This woman was really good at playacting. Bai Weijin turned away.
As expected, Gu Yeze walked slowly in their direction.
Zhang Ranran gave a coquettish smile at the sight of Gu Yeze, “Yeze.”
Gu Yeze remembered this woman. She was given as a gift to him at a dinner party and was said to be a rising star.
Though he had no habit of having sexual relations with one woman twice, Gu Yeze was rather generous to his mistresses. Most of the women, after being paid by cheque, would readily accept the fact that their relation was at an end.
Unlike them, Zhang Ranran had been continually pestering him. Gu Yeze’s brow furrowed.
The last time Zhang Ranran saw Gu Yeze was the day when she reached Gu’s Group but was driven away by the security. She hated Gu Yeze for having a heart of stone, but the moment his handsome face came into view, Zhang felt all was worth it.
She snuggled close to his arm, grumbling in a flirtish manner, “I went to see you the other day, but those stupid security guards drove me off. My sweet, it really pissed me off.”
Her reeking of strong perfume nearly made Gu Yeze sick. He was about to push her away when seeing that Bai Weijin was looking on in a composed manner.
A feeling of indescribable anger came over Gu Yeze. He managed to suppress his sickness and held Zhang Ranran in his arms.
Zhang Ranran was immensely flattered at his hug and poured out her heart to Gu Yeze in an affectedly sweet voice.
Bai Weijin thought Gu Yeze must have had the same aversion to this woman, to find that he liked the affected kind. Somehow, her temper flared.
She found the scene extremely distressing.
The man who hoped to be closer to her a few days ago should stay with such a woman now.
Zhang Ranran reclined in Gu Yeze’s arms and threw Bai Weijin a mocking glance, as if saying to her: What’s the use of being his wife? The one he likes is me instead of you.
Disgusted to see her expression, Bai Weijin took some cakes randomly and left.
She strode off. Nobody noticed her steps were even unsteady.
Gu Yeze had intended to make Bai Weijin jealous but didn’t expect she would give him a disgusted look and walk away without any hesitation.
He shoved aside Zhang Ranran who tried to get physical in his arms, venting his anger on her.
Zhang Ranran was taken aback. Unwilling to give up, she reached for his hand.
Gu Yeze spoke unkindly, “Do you want to be kicked out of the party?”
On hearing what he said, Zhang Ranran recalled immediately her humiliating experience of being thrown out and was suddenly stuck for words.
As a waiter passed by, Gu Yeze picked up a glass of wine from his tray and drank it in one gulp.
It took a long while for Bai Weijin to cool down.
“Ah, here comes my homeless sister!”
Bai Weijin took a deep breath. What an endless stream of creeps tonight!
Her mood lifted as she replied with an easy grace, “Long time no see. You seem to have dispelled the gloom about your wedding, haven’t you?”
Her words touched Bai Yinya’s sore point. She hated it when Bai Weijin maintained her composure.
It seemed that whether she won or not, Bai Weijin would always be a cut above her.
Yet the very thought of seeing Bai Weijin meet a sad fate made her chuckle.
The banquet hall was swarming with media agencies and people from the high society. Bai Weijin could definitely not escape unscathed.
“Bai Weijin, how could you be so heartless? I won’t make things easy for you, just wait!” White Yinya swore at her sister, her crimson nails pierced into the palm of her hand.
“Talk to the hand! And a word of advice: how about you swaggering over towards me the day your dream comes true?” Bai Weijin was in no mood to wrangle with her.
Bai Yinya gazed at the receding figure of Bai Weijin, her teeth gritted.
In a corner stood Yan Sheng who had a good view of where the sisters had been.
Annoyed with Bai Yinya for disgracing him at their wedding, Yan Sheng had been dallying with other women these months.
Today he came across Bai Weijin at the party.
His eyes lingered on her face as she entered the room.
What was more, he saw the incidents from beginning to end with his own eyes: her humiliating a rival in love, her turning away with grace and her fierce battle of tongue with Bai Yinya.
She was an out-and-out queen bee. Yan Sheng regretted marrying Bai Yinya, who, measured against Bai Weijin, was far outshone, yet it was too late.
If only this proud woman could sleep with him.
Yan Sheng’s eyes were glued to every twinkle and smile of Bai Weijin, yet her identity as Gu Yeze’s wife dispelled his illusion about flirting with her.
Bai Weijin’ didn’t take much notice of Yan Sheng’s gaze, for her mind was still on Gu Yeze and the wretched woman.
The host delivered a speech on stage. Gu Yeze was surrounded by a bevy of beauties and beer-bellied men bowing and scraping.
It was not until then that Bai Weijin finally noticed a man staring at her intently.
She turned around.
It was Yan Sheng. He was standing on the second floor and looked at her with a blank expression. When their eyes met, he looked away.
When they were at a young age, Bai Weijin had a slight affection for this man. Now, disgusted at his clandestine love affair with Bai Yinya, Bai Weijin studiously ignored him.
