He grew up together with Chu Jiran and had every confidence in the guy. Thus, if Gu Yeyu and Chu Jiran fell in love with each other, that would be welcome news for Gu Yeze.
However, Chu Jiran only regarded Gu Yeyu as his sister. Despite Gu Yeze’s efforts, Chu Jiran had ever taken a fancy to her.
Gu Yeze gave up helping to bring about their union in the hope that his sister would forget Chu Jiran years later.
Yet he didn’t expect the girl, as stubborn as him, still held deep admiration for Chu Jiran after staying abroad for years.
Gu Yeyu felt aggrieved at her brother’s glare.
Bai Weijin would take Gu Yeyu under her wing before under such circumstances, but now Gu Yeyu had another one to rely upon. Gu Yeyu hid behind Chu Jiran.
“Help! My brother’s too rough on me.”
Amused, Chu Jiran pulled her over, “He’s right. You really deserve a lesson.”
Gu Yeyu made faces, hummed and hawed for ages before opening her mouth, “Jiran, aren’t you angry about my dating with Zhao Lei?”
‘It’s not like Gu Yeyu to falter. In the past, she, the apple of Gu family’s eye, was spoiled rotten and did whatever pleased her,’ sighed Bai Weijin quietly.
“Of course I am. I am quite angry.” Chu Jiran answered.
On hearing his words, Gu Yeyu jumped for joy, “Really? No kidding?”
Gu Yeze gave the poor fool a sympathetic look. As expected, Chu Jiran continued, “My younger sister was coaxed by a bad guy, how could I remain indifferent?”
Younger sister? Gu Yeyu suddenly lost heart, sitting back without a word.
Seeing the rare crestfallen look on Gu Yeyu’s face, Bai Weijin chimed in, “It’s really a shame that our darling went steady with the bloody fool. So how about you two being together, Jiran?”
Gu Yeyu’s eyes lit up when she gave Bai Weijin a wink. ‘My brother proves not to be depended upon. Luckily, I have Weijin.’
Chu Jiran’s hand slightly trembled when he heard what Bai Weijin said.
Then he replied, “What are you talking about? Yeyu is a sister for me.”
The cheerful smile on Gu Yeyu’s face disappeared without a trace. She flew into a rage, “You’re not a member of our family, how come I become your sister?”
She then stormed out.
It had been a while before Bai Weijin realized what had happened. She gave Gu Yeze a wink and followed Gu Yeyu out.
Chu Jiran and Gu Yeze sat there. Dejected, Chu Jiran lit a cigarette.
For such a gentle and refined person, smoking could even be a natural thing to do. Chu Jiran exposed a trace of sadness, while Gu Yeze seemed cool and continued dining, “Yeyu has no shortcomings but being willful at times. You may think it over before making the decision.”
Chu Jiran gave a wry smile. Unwillingness could never produce desired results, especially in love. He shook his head, “You know, I have no fancy to Yeyu.”
On the contrary, every movement of that woman attracted his attention.
Gu Yeze said nothing more. He wasn’t good at giving comfort, so he raised a glass in a toast to Chu Jiran and kept on eating.
After running several kilometers, Gu Yeyu started to shuffle forward, her shoulders heaving.
Bai Weijin followed not far behind, leaving her alone.
After a long time, Bai Weijin quickly caught up, holding Gu Yeyu by the shoulders in a gentle manner. The girl was finally unable to repress her sadness.
She turned away and hugged Bai Weijin, “Weijin!”
Bai Weijin didn’t stop her from crying. When passers-by cast them a curious glance, Bai Weijin just turned a blind eye.
Actually, Bai Weijin was envious of Gu Yeyu who lived in a way she desired.
Much-loved, she grinned when feeling happy and wailed when in a bad mood.
On the contrary, Bai Weijin seemed devoid of facial expression when she lived in Bai house, for she always hid her real feelings, in case that anyone knew her weakness.
Her eyes full of tears, Gu Yeyu leaned on Bai Weijin’s shoulder and muttered, “Weijin, what should I do? Whatever I did, Jiran would never love me.”
“He does love you, though not in the form you want,” said Bai Weijin.
Bai Weijin’s words laid bare their relationship. Gu Yeyu continued, “I’m sorry, I had another idea in the very beginning. I wanted to…to see if Jiran would get jealous.”
Gu Yeze had already told her that, so Bai Weijin didn’t mind it in the slightest.
“You don’t have to say sorry. There’s nothing wrong with that.”
Gu Yeyu heaved a sigh of relief. Luckily, Weijin wasn’t mad at her. But she was still in low spirits.
Bai Weijin spoke after a long while.
“I once had a crush on a man, my ex-fiancé. It was my mom that decided to let me be betrothed to him.”
“Then?” Gu Yeyu asked. She had no idea of Bai Weijin’s past.
“Later, my sister seduced him when I was abroad. Yet he didn’t resist the temptation and soon had a relationship with her.”
Gu Yeyu stood upright, looking into Bai Weijin’s eyes, “Didn’t you feel sad?”
Bai Weijin nodded, “Surely I did. Although I wasn’t infatuated with him, I was still unhappy about that. Apart from anger at his betrayal, I also cannot reconcile myself to the unhappy ending.”
Gu Yeyu clenched her fists.
“I once wondered whether it was my fault, but then I felt relieved. Why did I pin the blame on myself after others did something wrong?”
“Jiran didn’t do anything wrong.”
“Of course he didn’t. But you did nothing wrong, either. You’re a good girl and will meet a lot of better men than him, so there’s no need to be sad due to him.”
Bai Weijin comforted the tearful girl in a gentle voice, “Furthermore, there’s a lot more apart from love in your life. You have Grandma, mom, dad, your brother and I, and all of us dote on you.”
It occurred to Gu Yeyu that Bai Weijin was strong enough to take the betrayal of her fiancé. At least, Chu Jiran showed her much affection, though he didn’t love her.
“You know, I live a happy life with your brother after the scum cheated on me,” said Bai Weijin with the intention of cheering up the girl.
Gu Yeyu firmly shook her head, “Jiran is totally different. I love him only, and there cannot be anyone better than him.”
Bai Weijin gave up persuading the stubborn girl. She patted Gu Yeyu on the shoulder in the hope that the girl’s dream would come true one day.
