“It’s time to go home,” Gu Yeze pulled Bai Weijin away.

Gu Yeyu ran over to comfort her, “Don’t worry, Weijin. Granny will understand what you went through.”

Bai Weijin forced a smile.

In addition to Grandma Gu’s reaction, Bai Hongbo’s selfishness also dispirited her.

Maid Wu went downstairs, whispering a word in Gu Yeze’s ear. Bai Weijin could faintly hear that Grandma Gu wanted a word with him.

She nodded at Gu Yeze, signaling that she was to wait here.

“You know what? Grandma hates trouble, and you’ve crossed the line,” said Shi Qian sardonically while stroking her painted nails.

“Since you know that, how about shutting your mouth? You’re such a gossipy woman that should be kicked out of Gu family.” Gu Yeyu retorted.

Shi Qian pretended not to hear that, for fear of provoking Gu Yeyu. She turned away to look at Bai Weijin.

“Why are you so heartless? Those are your family after all. No wonder Grandma was so angry.”

Gu Yelin gave a snort, “You also incited Yeze to deal with Bai family, which, I’m afraid, is the reason why you married him.”

Bai Weijin’s pupils contracted.

His words irritated her still more. Gu Yeyu was also seething with rage.

Bai Weijin stood up, looking down at them.

“I could be so stony-hearted to my dad, so, how do you expect I will let go Gu family if you offend me?” After she said that, an eerie silence fell upon the scene.

“Well? How are you gonna not let us off?” Grandma Gu’s voice came from the staircase.

Bai Weijin was dumbfounded.

Gu Yeze frowned.

She was gonna teach Gu Yelin a lesson, to find that Grandma Gu heard it and misunderstood her.

Shi Qian immediately feigned innocence, “Grandma, I was just giving her a little lecture, while she…”

She looked as if she had been wronged.

“You’re talking nonsense! It was you that…” Gu Yeyu stood up and tried to defend Bai Weijin.

“Gu Yeyu, shut it!” Grandma Gu slapped the handrail, and Gu Yeyu immediately closed her mouth.

The rumble echoed through the whole building.

“Grandma, I don’t mean that.” Bai Weijin tried to explain for herself, though she always disdained to do that.

Grandma Gu, however, turned pale with rage.

Gu Yeze didn’t say anything.

Bai Weijin slightly looked up, and her eyes met Gu Yeze’s.

For a long while, Gu Yeze remained silent.

‘Grandma Gu may not understand me, for there’s no blood relation between us, but how… how can Gu Yeze even not try to defend me?’

‘Don’t you know which kind of person your cousin is?”

Bai Weijin gave a sneer, took her bag on the sofa and left.

Gu Yeyu would like to catch up with Bai Weijin but was stopped by Grandma Gu. She gave Shi Qian a glare for adding fuel to the fire and then stared at the receding figure of Bai Weijin, which concerned her very much.

Bai Weijin walked away with a determined look yet she could not stop trembling.

…

They lived far from Gu house. Bai Weijin arrived home late at night.

The living room was empty, but she was in no mood to know where Gu Yeze had gone. Bai Weijin changed her shoes when it occurred to her that the man who had whispered sweet nothings to her now left her alone.

This was her life—people she cherished ended up leaving her alone one by one.

It was a long day. Bai Weijin just wanted to go to bed and have a rest.

Suddenly footsteps came along the stairs. Bai Weijin learned immediately it was Gu Yeze coming, but she pretended not to hear that and passed him.

“You shouldn’t have spoken that way.”

Bai Weijin strode towards her room when Gu Yeze grabbed her arm.

“Gu Yeze, let go! I don’t bother to quarrel with you.”

“Why are you always being so overbearing? Your words did vex Grandma in that case.”

Filled with pent-up anger all day long, Bai Weijin swung Gu Yeze’s arm away.

“In that case? You tell me in which case? Do you mean I shouldn’t have retorted in the face of Shi Qian’s provocation? Or should I remain silent when Gu Yelin sowed discord among us?”

“Do you have any idea what was on Grandma’s mind?”

Bai Weijin looked at him, “I had no idea of what Grandma was thinking, and I’m not such a virtuous and filial daughter-in-law as she expects. If you want such a wife, go remarry, please.”

Gu Yeze’s eyes were blazing with anger.

A wave of disappointment came over him, “Sure enough you are.”

“I’m what?” Bai Weijin questioned him closely.

Gu Yeze shook his head and left without a word. When he was about to walk to the end of the corridor, the man suddenly opened his mouth.

“There can’t be any breathing space for Bai’s Group. Bai Yinya met her doom, and you’ve already achieved your ends. Is Gu family meaningless to you now?”

Bai Weijin was stunned.

Confused about his question, she made no explanation but watched Gu Yeze disappear along the corridor.

…

“Yeze, tell me the truth, why did you marry her?”

Gu Yeze answered that they loved each other and that Bai Weijin was a good wife for him.

Grandma Gu’s face fell, “You cannot fool me with that old excuse. You got married because you’d like to distract my attention, and she needed to take revenge on Bai family with your aid!”

Gu Yeze was clear that she would not believe a word he said.

As a woman who had called the shots in the house for a decade, Grandma Gu couldn’t be fooled easily.

“How dare you marry such a woman! Aren’t you afraid that she would destroy our family one day?” Grandma Gu slapped the table.

“She would not as long as I’m here.”

“Don’t be overly self-confident. Such a hard-hearted woman is likely to betray us!”

“She won’t.”

“You’d better make sure she’ll devote herself heart and soul to Gu family from now on, with no wicked idea at all.”

Given that Gu’s was the fruit of her lifelong hard work, Grandma Gu was cautious about allowing the admission of anyone who had impure motives.

Unexpectedly, she heard that from Bai Weijin the moment she went out of the study.
