Two days after being summoned to the palace.
A letter from a friend arrived at the mansion in the capital.
The letter, which began with seasonal greetings, was written succinctly, perhaps because it was from a close friend, unlike the usual elaborate letters between nobles.
In short, the letter was an announcement of a visit.
The sender was a close friend, but it was rare for a letter to come like this.
Moreover, this friend had never visited my home before.
I wonder what brought this on?
I pondered while looking at the sender's name.
The friend's name is Cyril Horton.
He is the son of a neighboring country's baron, with black hair and striking, narrow red eyes.
He has a well-defined appearance and a slender build, and when he appears in social settings, he draws the attention of many ladies.
His charm is not limited to his appearance.
His demeanor is also exceptionally charming, and most people are deceived by it.
Let me repeat this because it's important.
Yes, they are deceived.
Those who are close to Cyril know that he is not just a handsome young nobleman.
In front of close friends, he smiles softly while uttering sharp words that are the opposite of his expression.
In other words, he has a sharp tongue.
I met him five years ago.
At a tea party held at a certain marquis's house, we happened to sit next to each other and started talking.
We were about the same age, and since I had never seen him before, I felt like talking to him.
That's when I learned that he had come from a neighboring country to study this country's culture.
Even if they are not well-versed in politics, noble daughters are generally knowledgeable about fabrics and jewels used in dresses.
Since he was from a neighboring country, I naturally brought up the topic of famous jewels from that country, as any ordinary noble daughter would.
As we talked, he seemed to get more and more interested.
At first, he had a forced smile, but by the time we parted, the atmosphere had changed considerably.
After that, we started talking more often whenever we met in social settings.
However, I was already engaged.
To avoid any rumors, we maintained a proper and restrained attitude towards each other.
We only met in public places and only had brief conversations.
Still, after Lord Henry began openly spending time with Baron Gordon's daughter in social settings, he, along with other friends, subtly stayed by my side.
In the midst of being ignored by my fiancé and receiving pitying or mocking glances from others, the presence of friends who shielded me from those gazes was a tremendous emotional support.
Even now, thinking back, it warms my heart.
Thinking up to this point, I suddenly realized.
Could he have already heard about Lord Henry?
The letter didn't mention the reason for the visit, but considering Cyril's keen ears, it's possible.
Even though he has a sharp tongue, he is subtly kind.
It wouldn't be strange if he heard about the situation and was worried.
If that's the case, there's no choice but to meet him.
If I didn't, it would only make him more worried.
With that in mind, I wrote a letter accepting the visit and had a maid deliver it to Cyril.
---
The next day.
Upon receiving the news of his arrival, I entered the reception room where Cyril was waiting, and he stood up when he noticed me.
"Thank you for coming."
"Yes, I'm sorry for the sudden visit."
"It's fine."
After the formal greetings, as we started talking more casually, Cyril's attitude also became more relaxed.
Even though it was a sudden visit, I had received a letter announcing the visit and a messenger before his arrival, so I had time to prepare, and there was no problem at all.
I gestured for Cyril to sit down and took a seat on the sofa myself. A teacup filled with tea was placed in front of me.
While I was greeting Cyril, the excellent maids had prepared the tea.
A tea trolley with the tea set was already in the room.
I couldn't help but smile at the perfect timing.
I thanked the maid who brought the tea, expressing my appreciation, and she bowed with a smile.
Seeing the maid move to the wall, I offered Cyril some tea.
As I lifted the teacup from the saucer and took a sip, I couldn't help but think the same thing as before.
He still has unnecessarily refined gestures.
Crossing his legs and leaning back in the chair is not a commendable posture.
Despite the air of arrogance, the way he brings the teacup to his lips is as elegant as a royal.
Is it his face, or his figure?
Or perhaps his good upbringing?
In any case, with all the positive elements, it's clear that he has it all.
"Anyway, what brings you here today?"
"I heard you were at the palace the other day."
After Cyril took a sip, I immediately asked what I wanted to know.
However, the response I received was vague.
Which is it?
Did he hear about my visit to the palace from someone?
Or did he hear that Lord Henry had asked to break the engagement?
The engagement is still technically in place due to procedural reasons.
Since it involves the royal family, even with a close friend like Cyril, I can't be careless.
It's better to give a safe answer.
"Yes, I was summoned by Lord Henry."
"What was the matter? Did he ask you to break the engagement?"
I tried to be vague, but Cyril didn't care and asked directly.
The expression on his face was casual, as if we were having a casual conversation.
However, I could sense a hint of concern in his gaze.
What should I do?
He asked so clearly and is worried.
I'm leaning towards being honest to ease his concern...
As I was pondering how to respond, Cyril added more words.
