The scene where the car sank into the river was the final scene that Yang Youming and Xia Xingcheng filmed, and Sun Yao saving Han Bohan in the water was their last ever shot.
After this shot, all their scenes would be completed.
The filming location was by a river in the countryside. Although it was already summer, the water at midnight chilled them to the bone.
The surface of the water was lit, but below, it was a sea of darkness. They first had to dive before Yang Youming would then tow Xia Xingcheng up. The currents weren’t strong, but the potential dangers couldn’t help but worry the crew the entire time.
Fortunately, Yang Youming and Xia Xingcheng were both good swimmers.
The part of the river they had chosen for the filming site wasn’t deep. Yang Youming and Xia Xingcheng could tread on the riverbed to make their way over to the filming spot. A car roof prop was placed in the river beside them, giving the impression that it had almost sunk.
The first shot was a long shot.
Under the lights, Xia Xingcheng shot a glance at Yang Youming. When He Zheng shouted for them to get ready, he took a deep breath and dived.
Yang Youming was right behind him. His arm encircled his chest, and their bodies were plastered against each other’s.
Xia Xingcheng didn’t forget the fact that he was Han Bohan, that he was semiconscious from a blow to the head. He instinctively rested his head on Yang Youming’s shoulder, relying on Yang Youming’s strength to pull him above the water.
Yet unexpectedly, Yang Youming turned Xia Xingcheng’s face and pressed a kiss to his lips. Xia Xingcheng couldn’t hold his breath; tiny bubbles escaped from his mouth. He opened his mouth, yet he was firmly blocked off by Yang Youming’s lips.
Lights shone down on the river, and there were more than a dozen crew members present. They kissed in secret, concealed by the water and nothing else. Xia Xingcheng was on tenterhooks, and only when he felt that he was floating upwards did Yang Youming let go of him.
By the time they resurfaced, Xia Xingcheng was gasping for air, not at all like a man who had lost his consciousness.
He Zheng stood at the shore, and through the megaphone in his hands, he shouted, “What’s going on? You dived for too long. Hurry it up a little next time. Hold your breath for me, Xia Xingcheng.”
Xia Xingcheng didn’t say a word. He just looked strangely at Yang Youming—this man would hardly ever mess with him while filming.
Yang Youming stood in the water, his body drenched from head to toe, his thin T-shirt plastered to his body. He muttered in Xia Xingcheng’s ear, “I have a present for you.”
Xia Xingcheng had no clue as to why he was suddenly a bundle of nerves. He didn’t have time to ask Yang Youming what the present was, however, as they were asked to dive underwater once more.
Yang Youming’s arms wound around him, and as they encircled Xia Xingcheng’s chest, his fingers touched his jaw.
Xia Xingcheng didn’t dare to open his eyes underwater. Even if he did though, he wouldn’t really be able to see anything either. He first thought that Yang Youming was going to kiss him again, but this time, a solid object was suddenly pressed against his lips.
Since he was entirely submerged in the ice-cold water, Xia Xingcheng had no way to tell what it was. He only felt a solid and smooth tiny object. At first, Yang Youming pressed it to his lips. Afterwards, it slid down his jaw to his neck, passing the tattoo on his collarbone, then across his chest, separated by a flimsy wet shirt, making his heart race fiercely. From his left shoulder, it then slid down his arm.
Yang Youming took Xia Xingcheng’s left hand, lifted it up in the water, and with his other hand, he sought out the tip of Xia Xingcheng’s ring finger and slipped that small object that had travelled along Xia Xingcheng’s body on until it was snug against his knuckle.
Xia Xingcheng’s heart was in complete shambles. When he sensed Yang Youming wrapping his arms around him and kicking upwards, he recalled that he was supposed to be acting just a second before they resurfaced and closed his eyes, resting his head on Yang Youming’s shoulder.
His ring-adorned hand dangled at his side, hidden below the water’s surface, firmly clenched into a fist.
The assistant director whispered to He Zheng, “They took too long underwater again, but we can trim the beginning of the shot.”
He Zheng’s face betrayed nothing. He only watched the playback monitor for a while before letting out a chuckle. He picked up the megaphone and yelled, “Good. Adjust the cameras for close-ups, we’ll wrap up after this scene!”
Several months of filming was finally over.
Xia Xingcheng stood at the shore. As he turned his head and stared at the river, what filled his mind wasn’t the poignant emotions from the last few months of filming, but instead the thought of Yang Youming’s steadily gentle touch as he slipped a ring on him, along with the violent thumping of his heart.
Hua Hua brought him a large towel and draped it across his shoulders.
Xia Xingcheng suddenly spun around and ran towards the nanny car parked on the side of the road.
The car was Yang Youming’s, and at present, there was only Yang Youming inside changing his clothes. Xia Xingcheng opened the car door, nimbly leapt in, closed the door behind him, and threw himself into Yang Youming’s arms.
Yang Youming had already taken off his wet clothes and dried his body with a towel. With Xia Xingcheng throwing his sopping wet body into his arms, there was nothing he could do but open up his arms and embrace Xia Xingcheng, his body tilting backwards on the seat.
Xia Xingcheng hugged him tightly, bracketing his waist with his legs. His voice was cloying yet hoarse as he said, “Isn’t there something you’d like to say to me?”
Yang Youming whispered against his ear, “Do you want to get married?”
Xia Xingcheng cried. He was rendered speechless for a long time and could only bring himself to nod fiercely. Yang Youming gently patted his back the whole time, calming him down.
When Xia Xingcheng calmed down a little at last, he raised his head from Yang Youming’s shoulder, gazed at him for a moment, then lowered his gaze to the ring around his finger. This was the first time he caught a clear glimpse at it. It was a simple and stylish platinum men’s ring, inlaid with elaborate fine diamonds, pretty but not excessive.
Yang Youming unbuttoned Xia Xingcheng’s wet shirt and said, “This is an engagement ring. There’s another pair. I’ll put it on for you at our wedding.”
Xia Xingcheng obediently let Yang Youming help undress him. Eyes shining, he asked, “Why now?”
Yang Youming stripped the wet shirt off his body, unbuttoned his pants, and patted his ass, gesturing for him to lift it up so he could take off his pants as well. All the while, he said, “I wanted to put the ring on you before we finish filming. I know you’ve worked hard on this movie. I hope that when you look back on the scenes that we shot together, the last thing you remember isn’t your character’s pain, but the ring I put on you with my own hands.”
Xia Xingcheng froze. By the time every piece of wet clothing on his body was finally off, he couldn’t stop his tears from falling. He hugged Yang Youming and refused to let go.
From Fang Jianyuan to Han Bohan—their lives were engraved in his memory scene by scene. Those they had loved, the pain they had suffered, all of it was eased away by Yang Youming’s hands at that instant. Going forward, the most profound memory that would remain in his mind would forever be the ring that Yang Youming put on for him with his own hands.
Yang Youming covered his head with the towel and rubbed his wet hair. As he did so, he said, “Why are you still crying?”
Xia Xingcheng had lived for over twenty years not knowing that he could shed so much tears. He knew that he must’ve seemed silly for crying, but he couldn’t stop. “I love you so much.”
“I know,” Yang Youming replied, “I love you too.”
After he exhausted himself from crying, Xia Xingcheng sat on Yang Youming’s lap. His head rested on Yang Youming’s shoulder, eyes red and swollen, feeling as if all his strength had escaped his body.
Outside, Hua Hua lightly knocked on the car window and said that she had brought Xia Xingcheng a change of clothes.
Yang Youming lowered his head and asked Xia Xingcheng, “Want to get your clothes?”
Xia Xingcheng answered hoarsely, “No.”
Yang Youming chuckled. “Okay.”
Xia Xingcheng fumbled about, sought out Yang Youming’s hand, and intertwined their fingers. The ring was wedged between their fingers, the fine diamonds twinkling, reflecting the radiant fireworks blooming within Xia Xingcheng’s heart at this very moment.
The movie ended with Han Bohan recovering his eyesight after medical treatment, and Sun Yao and Shu Mian assuming the legal responsibility they deserve for the crimes they had committed.
Han Bohan attended Han Zhang’s hearing, and he personally witnessed the man being sentenced to ten years in prison for corruption and bribery, while he himself voluntarily resigned from his post as a prosecutor, staying in the procuratorate as an ordinary assistant prosecutor.
Sun Xunyan received legal aid and was admitted to a sanatorium. Han Bohan visited her and talked about her dad’s current situation. Sun Xunyan’s eyes were closed as she lay in bed, and after Han Bohan finished talking, her thin, pale fingers twitched faintly. The movie thus ended.
This ending was slightly inconsistent with the ending of the original novel, but Xia Xingcheng preferred this one. He believed that humans are inherently good—no matter how cold and tough someone is on the outside, they would always have a soft spot, deep down, so long as you could reach it.
After ‘The Trap’ wrapped up, Yang Youming and Xia Xingcheng took some time off. Since they lived together for the entire duration of filming, there was naturally a lack of that fresh feeling of reuniting after a long separation. Nevertheless, Xia Xingcheng wanted to stick to Yang Youming at all times, never getting enough of him.
However, what Xia Xingcheng was looking forward to the most at present was holding his and Yang Youming’s wedding.
Although it couldn’t be recognized by the law, Xia Xingcheng wanted a ceremony. After this ceremony—whether it was Xia Xingcheng or Yang Youming—they would be well and truly married, hand in hand, till death does them apart.
But before that, Xia Xingcheng had to face the most difficult hurdle of all—he wanted to invite his parents to their wedding.
While Yang Youming prepared lunch in the kitchen, Xia Xingcheng paced back and forth restlessly. A while later, he walked over to Yang Youming and hugged his waist, and said, “I’m so nervous.”
“You don’t need to be nervous,” Yang Youming stopped cutting the vegetables. “Parents—they always want the best for you, they want you to be happy. They’ll soften up with time.”
Xia Xingcheng said, “I already know that they won’t do anything to me. I’m just worried they’ll give you a hard time.”
Yang Youming said, “I deserve it. Who wouldn’t be angry if the silly son they brought up ran off with me.”
Xia Xingcheng bit his shoulder from behind, not refuting the ‘silly son’ label. He said “My parents aren’t like my brother. They definitely won’t do anything to you.”
Yang Youming chuckled. “It’s all right, I can take it. After all, I could take your brother’s beating too.”
Hearing these words from his mouth made Xia Xingcheng feel distressed. He hugged him for a long time, refusing to let go. Their lunch was also delayed.
This was the second time Yang Youming went home with Xia Xingcheng. What happened the last time around left a shadow in Xia Xingcheng’s mind, and that lingering fear was still following him today.
Before they set off, he repeatedly said to Yang Youming, “You can’t leave early and abandon me.”
Yang Youming was packing their bags in the cloakroom, squatting on the floor and packing a change of clothes for the both of them. He packed them into the same suitcase while placating Xia Xingcheng’s anxiety, “I won’t leave.”
Xia Xingcheng walked to his side and sat down, legs crossed. “Promise me.”
Yang Youming stopped packing, pressing a hand to his chest. “I promise. I swear I’ll never leave you.”
Xia Xingcheng reflected for a moment before saying, “If they’re too much though, you’d better leave. But you have to take me with you.”
Yang Youming smiled at his words, held his hand, and said, “Of course I’m taking you with me. We’re still getting married—in the future, wherever I go, I’ll always take you with me.”
The last time Yang Youming came home with Xia Xingcheng, it was winter, yet this time, it was a blistering hot summer.
Just like last time, Xia Ye came to pick them up, but there was something slightly different about him—Xia Ye’s attitude was a lot more accommodating than before.
Xia Xingcheng had called him about the wedding beforehand. On the other end, Xia Ye had frozen up for a long time before he eventually said, “I honestly never expected this.”
Many things were beyond his expectation. The way he saw, it was practically impossible for them to wind up together, let alone decide on getting married. He was no longer angry. His pointless fury had long since dissipated the moment he’d laid a hit on Yang Youming, and later on, Fang Ying had told him: If Yang Youming and Xia Xingcheng really could last to the end, then it was a blessing. Xia Ye hadn’t wanted to admit it, but he gradually began to accept it.
On the way home, Xia Xingcheng slept on Yang Youming’s shoulder.
Xia Ye peeked at them from the rearview mirror and saw Yang Youming propping up Xia Xingcheng’s head so he could sleep a little better.
When Yang Youming looked up, he accidentally met Xia Ye’s eyes in the rearview mirror. He smiled, and softly said, “He’s nervous. He didn’t sleep well last night.”
Xia Ye said, “I gave my parents a heads-up.”
Yang Youming slightly nodded. After a moment, he said, “Thank you.”
Xia Ye said, “I don’t want Xingcheng to be too upset.”
Yang Youming glanced down at Xia Xingcheng. A beat later, he said, “We can’t avoid going through this process. But everything will be fine in the end.”
The certainty in his voice held a wondrous power to ease the heart.
Xia Ye sighed in silence. With a rare bit of calmness, he said, “I hope so.”
“Ming ge,” Xia Xingcheng, who had woken up at some point, called out softly. His head hadn’t moved an inch from where it rested on Yang Youming’s shoulder.
Yang Youming responded, “Mm?”
Xia Ye couldn’t help spying at them through the rearview mirror and saw Xia Xingcheng holding his left hand up, admiring the ring on his hand, his full attention on the ring, looking happy.
The sunlight shone through the car window, and the fine diamonds on the ring dazzled with light.
At that moment, the tough guy Xia Ye was inexplicably moved. He didn’t even know why, but he felt that it was quite a nice feeling.
Immediately after, Xia Xingcheng took hold of Yang Youming’s hand, his fingertips rubbing the calluses on his palm. Suddenly, with a soft voice that seemed to contain a hint of flirtation, he called out, “Husband?” The moment the word left his mouth, Xia Xingcheng buried his head in Yang Youming’s arms in shame, wondering if he wasn’t fully awake yet. While mortified, he laughed.
Yang Youming hugged him, leaning in and whispering in his ear, “What did you call me?”
Xia Xingcheng shook his head.
Yang Youming lips were practically glued to Xia Xingcheng’s ear. He firmly gripped Xia Xingcheng’s wrist with one hand, unyielding yet coaxing him gently, “Say it again.”
Xia Xingcheng kept mum. He refused to lift his head and show his face until the end.
Xia Ye was driving. His forehead throbbed. He decided to revoke whatever emotions he’d felt just then.
When he found himself hearing Xia Xingcheng say the word ‘husband’, the first thing that crossed his mind was to haul Xia Xingcheng out of the car and give him a beating. This little brother of his was damn hopeless!
