The car stopped in front of the Xia family villa. When Xia Xingcheng got out of the car and saw that only his sister-in-law was standing at the doorway to greet them, he became even more uneasy.
Xia Ye helped Yang Youming unload their luggage.
Smiling, Fang Ying embraced Xia Xingcheng, then whispered, “I told Mom and Dad that you’d be coming home with Yang Youming. Mom didn’t say anything, but Dad’s reaction seemed a bit off.”
Xia Xingcheng forced out a smile. He nodded and said that he understood before slipping past Fang Ying and directly entering the house.
Mama Xia stood at the kitchen doorway in an apron. “Xingcheng’s home?” she asked as she wiped her hand on her apron.
Papa Xia was seated on the sofa. On the coffee table in front of him was a piping hot thermos mug. As he raised his head and looked at Xia Xingcheng, he had a solemn expression on his face. “What brought you back today? What exactly do you want to tell us?”
Xia Xingcheng took a deep breath. He’d already made up his mind. “Dad, Mom, I’m getting married,” he announced.
Mama Xia walked over in a hurry, still wiping her hands without thinking. “Why are you bringing up marriage so suddenly?”
Papa Xia was still unfazed. He said, “Who are you marrying? You haven’t even brought that young lady over to meet us, yet you intend to marry her right away?”
Yang Youming, who had already stepped into the living room by then, piped up, “Uncle, Auntie, Xingcheng is getting married to me.”
Papa Xia’s face fell, as if he’d been humiliated. His chest rose and fell violently with every breath he took.
Mama Xia, on the other hand, appeared perplexed, looking at Papa Xia without uttering a single word.
Papa Xia rose to his feet. He didn’t even spare a glance at Yang Youming before bellowing angrily at Xia Xingcheng, “What kind of marriage is this?! You’re marrying a man?!”
Fang Ying and Xia Ye stood by the door. The husband and wife pair shared a glance. They had already anticipated this situation, but they had no idea how they should go about it.
Yang Youming approached Xia Xingcheng from behind and held his arm. He asked in earnest, “Uncle, don’t be mad at Xingcheng. Can you please listen to what we have to say?”
Papa Xia looked his way, and there was no trace of politeness in his voice as he said, “Mr. Yang, my scolding my son is none of your business.”
Xia Xingcheng turned to look at Yang Youming. The man seemed like he had something to say, but he bit back his words. Yang Youming then patted Xia Xingcheng’s arm, signaling for him to listen.
After all, it was important for the old man to be able to vent some of that anger first. Otherwise that anger would only smolder even more.
Papa Xia pointed at Xia Xingcheng and said, “I shouldn’t have allowed you to film and become a celebrity! That rotten cesspool of an industry, what a total mess! You’ve turned yourself into a sissy!”
When he heard his dad’s words, Xia Xingcheng didn’t feel the least bit angry. In fact, his heart would feel minutely better if his parents’ reaction was merely outrage—far better than if they had shed heartbroken tears. He bowed his head at the tongue-lashing, and in the end, in a whisper, all he said was, “I’m not a sissy.”
Papa Xia roared, “Why are you marrying a man if you aren’t a sissy?! Didn’t you have girlfriends before? You grew up normal, why did you turn out like this?”
After saying that, the old man covered his chest and began wheezing, scaring the entire family into action. They flocked towards him and settled him down on the sofa, patting his chest and handing him a glass of water.
Mama Xia was anxious. “Calm down, think of your health.”
Papa Xia downed several mouthfuls of warm water and eventually calmed down a little. He turned away, refusing to look at Xia Xingcheng who was half-kneeling in front of him.
They had Xia Xingcheng quite late in life. He grew up spoiled, and as an adult, he hadn’t given them the slightest grievance. While Xia Ye had often been beaten, if it were Xia Xingcheng in front of him, Papa Xia hesitated to lift even a finger.
In his eyes, Xia Xingcheng was still a child. He was furious—furious that Xia Xingcheng had been led astray by someone in the entertainment industry, but he couldn’t curse at Yang Youming in any way. He had no choice but to chastise his own son. The old man grew up in a conservative family; these ideas didn’t exist in his mind, and he had never bothered to understand them—all he knew was that men didn’t belong with men, that they couldn’t get married, and that they couldn’t have children.
Papa Xia gradually regained his composure after being surrounded by his family, who temporarily calmed him, but he was struck by a gloomy mood. “Can you think it over and not rush to get married?” he asked.
Still half-kneeling in front of his dad, Xia Xingcheng looked up and gripped the man’s hand, saying, “I’ve never been happier. Dad. I’m scared that if I leave Ming ge, I’ll never be happy again for the rest of my life. We’ve already set a date for the wedding and booked the venue. We’ll hold the wedding regardless of whether you and Mom attend. But I hope you will. I adore you and Mom so much, and I want you all to know how happy I am.”
Despite that, the Xia family ended up parting on bad terms that day.
Yang Youming and Xia Xingcheng weren’t in a hurry to leave. That night, they stayed at a hotel.
Xia Xingcheng was obviously depressed. He barely spoke a word. After showering, he changed into his pajamas and lay on his stomach on the bed, chatting on WeChat with Fang Ying.
Fang Ying told him that his mother wasn’t actually that mad, and she didn’t think that his mother wouldn’t be able to understand.
Xia Xingcheng was a little surprised.
Fang Ying said that Mama Xia had nothing to do these days, so she would surf the web on her tablet. She’d most likely seen it all on the internet.
Xia Xingcheng typed: Mom won’t come to my wedding if dad doesn’t approve.
Fang Ying replied with a sighing meme.
Right then, a freshly showered Yang Youming stepped out of the bathroom. He wasn’t wearing his sleeping attire, but was still dressed neatly. He walked to the bed, kneeled on the bed with one knee, and leaned over to stroke Xia Xingcheng’s hair. He said, “I’m stepping out for a bit.”
Xia Xingcheng swiftly flipped over, lying on his back and facing Yang Youming. “Where are you going?”
Yang Youming said, “I’m going out to take care of something. Wait here and get some rest.”
Xia Xingcheng captured his arm. He had no idea what else Yang Youming might be up to here unless it had something to do with his family. Somewhat nervous, he asked, “You’re not going to abduct my parents, are you?”
Yang Youming chuckled and sat on the bed properly. “No way, your brother would probably beat me up.”
Xia Xingcheng said, “Then what are you doing?”
Yang Youming took his hand, holding it in his palm. “I’m going to see your dad and have a nice little chat.”
Xia Xingcheng recalled his dad’s outburst from earlier that day. “I don’t think he’ll want to talk to you,” he said, not sounding particularly confident.
Yang Youming said, “Don’t worry, I’ve got a few tricks up my sleeve. Your dad isn’t an unreasonable man, he just wants the best for you. Everything can be worked out.”
Xia Xingcheng frowned slightly. He gazed at him for a while, but he didn’t feel at ease the whole time. “I’m going with you.”
Yang Youming squeezed his hand. “Stay here. I’ll go talk to him alone.”
Xia Xingcheng said, “I’ll worry.”
Yang Youming thought for a moment before hoisting Xia Xingcheng onto his lap. “How about this,” he suggested, “call me husband again.”
Xia Xingcheng’s face flushed in an instant. He had no idea what had come over him earlier today to cause that word to mysteriously escape his lips. His toes were practically curling from shame. There was no way that he’d be willing to call Yang Youming ‘husband’ again now.
He hooked his fingers into the narrow seam between two buttons on Yang Youming’s shirt, averting his gaze as he asked, “What does that have to do with this?”
Yang Youming looked down at him. “If you call me husband, your husband will take care of everything for you. I’ll definitely get your parents to relent and come to our wedding. What do you say?”
Xia Xingcheng looked up at him. After a moment, he reached over and wound his arms around Yang Youming’s neck, then leaned in to kiss his lips.
They grinded against each other on the bed until Yang Youming’s clothes came apart. Breathless, Xia Xingcheng looked up and said, “We’re still getting married with or without them. In any case, we have our whole lives ahead of us—we can convince them slowly. I don’t want you to go to the ends of the earth for me either. As long as you’re happy, I’d do anything for you.”
After he said that, he realised that Yang Youming was gazing at him directly. He felt embarrassed, so he raised his hand to cover Yang Youming’s eyes, then whispered in his ear, “Husband, I love you.”
He then saw the corner of Yang Youming’s mouth curl up, and leaned in again to give him a bite.
Afterwards, Yang Youming straightened his clothes and left.
He sent Fang Ying a WeChat message, telling her that Yang Youming was heading over there now.
Around more than half an hour later, Fang Ying replied to him: “Yang Youming’s here. He’s talking to dad in the living room right now.”
Xia Xingcheng immediately asked: “What are they talking about?”
Fang Ying replied: “I don’t know. Your brother didn’t join them. We can’t hear their voices.”
Xia Xingcheng: “Dad isn’t cursing him out, right?”
Fang Ying: “No, you know that dad is always polite to guests. They’re being quite civil.”
Xia Xingcheng sat up on the bed. “Should I go there and check up on them?”
Fang Ying: “I think you’d better not. Let them talk.”
Fang Ying didn’t send him another message after that.
Without any signs of Yang Youming returning, Xia Xingcheng tossed and turned in bed restlessly the whole night, failing to fall asleep on several counts.
Much later, in the wee hours of the morning, he heard the door open with a click, and he jolted from the bed, turning on the bedside light and shouting, “Ming ge!”
Yang Youming entered the room. He stood by the bed, leaning over to kiss Xia Xingcheng’s forehead. “It’s all right, just sleep.”
Xia Xingcheng grabbed his arm. “Did my dad approve?”
Yang Youming unbuttoned his shirt. “I’ve told your dad everything I wanted to say. I also invited him to our wedding—but only time will tell if he decides to come or not.” He took off his shirt and tossed it aside, picking up the pajamas by the bed, planning to take another shower. Before he left the room, he added, “I’m sure they’ll come.”
The wedding date was set for the following month. They naturally held it on an island overseas. Because it was a small wedding, the preparations were less complicated than they’d expected. Yang Youming also had money, so it was also particularly well-organized.
The wedding only had a dozen guests, all of whom were close relatives and good friends of the two. Besides his own family, Xia Xingcheng had also invited Hua Hua, Huang Jixin, and his boss Cai Meiting. Yang Youming, on the other hand, hadn’t invited any of his relatives. All his guests were his closest friends in the industry, including Chen Hailan and his wife, Ding Wenxun, Lu Nianxin, and He Zheng, along with those he’d worked with for years like Du Jin and Li Yun and their families.
On the day of the wedding, both Xia Xingcheng and Yang Youming wore white suits.
Their wedding ceremony was straightforward, with no best man or bridesmaids and only a wedding officiant. They would exchange rings and recite their vows under the blue sky, with the sea as a witness.
Xia Xingcheng’s parents had shown up, in the end.
Yang Youming ended up never telling Xia Xingcheng what he and his dad had talked about that night. The old man wore a reluctant face, there wasn’t even a shadow of a smile, but as they tied the knot, he sat by the wedding platform and watched his son with red eyes.
Mama Xia was crying, her head bowed as she wiped at her tears, thinking that no one had seen her, when in fact Xia Xingcheng had caught her with a glance.
This was Ding Ding and Dong Dong’s first trip to the seaside. They had been so excited that they ran around the whole time. Later on, Ding Ding had pushed Dong Dong into the sea, and he was caught by Fang Ying and got handed over to Xia Ye for a good spanking.
Dong Dong’s new clothes were completely soaked. He stared at his mom, overwhelmed. Fang Ying had to take him back to the hotel room and change his clothes. Originally, Dong Dong and Ding Ding wore matching little suits, so when Dong Dong came out wearing a different set of clothes that wasn’t nearly as cool as Ding Ding’s, his mood immediately plunged.
Meanwhile Ding Ding, who had been spanked, wept on his chair, upset. He couldn’t pay attention to Dong Dong at all.
What astounded Xia Xingcheng more was how Huang Jixin was sitting below the platform with red eyes. He sighed, then turned away to hide his emotions.
Ding Wenxun sat next to Chen Hailan and his wife. He was still a little bewildered, and he quietly asked them when exactly Yang Youming and Xia Xingcheng got together.
Lu Nianxin shook his head regretfully, expressing his clear disapproval at Yang Youming’s insensible decision to voluntarily enter another marriage after having just broken off his previous one. The way he saw it, there were so many fish in the sea, so why should you insist on being tied to a certain person until death?
He Zheng couldn’t smoke, so he seemed a little fidgety. He wrung his fingers from time to time, and the way he sat was improper from start to finish. He crossed his legs, as if he wanted nothing more than for the wedding to be over, but he also seemed absent-minded. While his gaze fell on Xia Xingcheng, he had a faraway look in his eyes, thoughts drifting elsewhere.
Xia Xingcheng wasn’t escorted to and given away by his father to Yang Youming. Instead, they had walked down the flower-lined aisle hand in hand, all the way to the small platform where the wedding rites would be held.
From that moment on, Xia Xingcheng and Yang Youming stood face to face. The blue sky and azure sea had merely become a fleeting backdrop, his eyes reflecting but only Yang Youming’s figure.
The two faced each other, the rim of their eyes faintly flushed.
Then, they solemnly exchanged rings, embraced, and kissed.
This was a marriage that was not bound by the law—but what binds a marriage is never the law; it is bound by the hearts of the two people tying the knot. Compared to a wedding certificate, what they needed more was simply a ceremony. From then on, they were no longer just lovers—they had become a family.
Yang Youming and Xia Xingcheng shared a long, drawn-out kiss, and eventually, he took Xia Xingcheng into his arms and lifted him up high. As he gazed up into Xia Xingcheng’s eyes, he said, “I love you——”
Xia Xingcheng gazed back at him. Tears streamed down his cheeks, but a smile never left his face. He continued Yang Youming’s words, saying, “——with all my life.”
