Chapter 49

Pushing aside the shrubs, the view was unobstructed.

On this small island, the trees grew relatively healthy, but not very densely. Perhaps because it was occasionally flooded by lake water, the trees on the island were of varying sizes.

Buck stealthily poked his head out from the shrubs and saw the middle-aged man called Uncle Cheng hanging upside down from a tree branch!

His two companions were straining to pull him down, hoping to untie the vine wrapped around Uncle Cheng's ankles, which was about three meters high. However, the more they pulled, the tighter the vine became!

This man-made trap was, of course, Buck's masterpiece!

In such a small area, with a slightly elevated hill, Buck would certainly make preparations. If yesterday's kidnapping was due to the suddenness of the situation, it would be inexcusable not to be prepared today, especially for a professional.

For him, it was a familiar and simple task. Using bent saplings and vines as tripwires, he set up traps along the paths in the woods. When Mu Chenfei fainted due to a blockage, he had already set everything up. For a competent hunter, using local materials without damaging the vegetation or the environment, it took only about ten minutes to set a trap. Choosing five key points on the inevitable paths was a professional judgment.

The most important thing was that most of these traps used the most resilient saplings as power sources, with whistles attached to the tree branches. Once triggered, the whistles would sound!

It was a green, environmentally friendly, and natural early warning defense system!

A survival skill that professional hunters and combat soldiers must master, whether for capturing prey or defending against enemies, it was an essential tool!

Actually, Buck had noticed the girl was running a fever early on and planned to find some herbs. But just as he stood up, he heard a whistle!

Following the sound, he saw the current situation.

Uncle Cheng, holding the pistol he had grabbed during the kidnapping, was somewhat shocked and angry: "How could this happen? What's going on! Who set this up..."

Buck only considered for half a second before deciding not to step out proudly to face the gun, even though he thought the middle-aged man's shooting accuracy would be poor while hanging upside down. Avoiding danger was a basic principle.

He quickly retreated, pushing the shrubs back, holding the entrenching tool that was originally left on the island to bury the girl after her torture or to bury himself, now it had become a weapon of murder!

It was still a matter of emotional threshold. If it had been during the kidnapping, Buck's resistance might not have been aimed at killing. On this island, which seemed to be beyond the law, after witnessing the despicable behavior of the kidnappers, Buck had no mercy. Whether the police would find the bodies later was not his concern.

It must be said that years of battlefield experience made Buck less hesitant when it came to disposing of bodies.

So, he stealthily circled around and approached the kidnappers from behind, killing them without hesitation. Not killing them would give them the chance to kill him. In such a situation, he never hesitated.

But Uncle Cheng, hanging high up, finally fired when Buck's entrenching tool was about to strike the second person. The bullet, of course, flew off somewhere.

In return, Buck slashed Uncle Cheng's arm holding the gun with his entrenching tool, severing it with a single blow!

The bloody stump and the white bone terrified Uncle Cheng, causing him to scream in agony. The middle-aged man's scream was so pitiful that it surprised Buck.

With the threat gone, Uncle Cheng hung in the air, his arm artery spurting blood, while Buck calmly collected the two bodies, whose necks were only partially connected, dragged them together, and buried them in a shallow grave. He then dug another pit. Even with his face pale to the extreme, Uncle Cheng understood that this was his final resting place. He still couldn't believe that this man, who seemed to have lost his fighting spirit, had become the key to the outcome: "I... I'll give you money..."

Buck directly crushed his larynx with his hand!

Finally, he threw the severed arm into the grave.

Incidentally, he found a few small white chrysanthemums and yellow spring chrysanthemums, which had good effects on treating fever and headaches, right where he was burying the bodies. These wild plants were exactly what he needed.

Looking up, the sky was already bright, and the sun was shining, another sunny day.

Mu Chenfei opened her eyes, a bit dazed, and as she felt her surroundings, she remembered what had happened yesterday. She realized that the sound that had startled her was a gunshot. Trying to sit up, she felt dizzy!

Even with little experience in taking care of herself, Mu Chenfei knew she was sick!

After such a terrifying day and a night of heavy rain, it was no wonder her mental and physical resistance had dropped, leading to her illness.

But she still managed to get up, knowing what the gunshots meant. Just as she sat up, the discomfort made her feel like a spoiled young lady, pouting and calling out softly: "Is... is anyone there?" She found herself covered with the suit, which explained why she didn't feel cold later.

In her heart, she knew she was calling for only one person, the one who had covered her with the suit. She didn't even check herself for any signs of trouble as she had done when she first woke up from her first faint.

There was no response from outside. The only sound was the chirping of cicadas, and the silence was complete. Mu Chenfei gritted her teeth to stand up, finding it hard to balance even in her high heels. She finally decided to carry them in her hand. When she lifted the suit, she carefully folded it and placed it aside. At this moment, Mu Chenfei realized that the real world was very different from the fairy-tale world she had lived in. Without the suit, she might have been even sicker, and she didn't know how long she would have to stay here, so it might come in handy.

Feeling incredibly weak, Mu Chenfei thought she was the most pitiful person in the world. Tears welled up without any emotional buildup, and she bit her lip lightly, leaning on a tree trunk as she stepped out of the small treehouse, looking around. She was eager to find him but feared that the gunshots meant danger and that her cries might bring trouble. What should she do?

She was completely at a loss!

For the first time, Mu Chenfei didn't care about her appearance and looked around anxiously, her heart pounding!

Then, as she heard intermittent screams, her heart raced, and she strained to identify if the voice belonged to the man who had protected her, reassuring herself: "It can't be him!"

This anxiety lasted for about half an hour. As the sound of light movement came from the forest, Mu Chenfei, hiding behind a tree, saw Buck emerge from the woods, wearing a dark blue T-shirt and loose jeans, smiling. She immediately rushed to him, not caring about her bare feet or her dizziness, though she stumbled a bit in the last few steps: "Where... where did you go?" The tone of her voice was completely different from when they first arrived on the island and even from last night.

Buck caught her with one hand, supporting her firmly, and with the other, he showed her the herbs: "You had a fever, so I found some white chrysanthemums and other herbs to help relieve your symptoms."

Hugging Buck's arm, Mu Chenfei looked up with a complex expression, feeling some unfamiliar emotions, so she frowned.

She looked at the man and the flowers with a sense of deep dependence.
