The student council’s activities had come to an end. The bus returned to Imperial University, and everyone went their separate ways.

Rong Jun stayed in his apartment near the school due to the internal strife in the Rong family, while Yan Chen had no intention of returning to the palace. The two resumed their usual holiday routine like nothing happened.

The only noticeable change was Rong Jun. He used the remaining two months to take on an internship. The pay wasn’t high, but the schedule was reliable, and more importantly, it gave him the chance to explore things he genuinely wanted to learn.

During this period, the number of times he acted spoiled or grumbled while waiting for Yan Chen at home increased noticeably.

At the same time, he realized just how dull and lonely life could feel without Yan Chen by his side. It was as if he were stepping into some kind of trap, almost forgetting how he had taken care of himself in his solitude or survived long stretches of time alone without anyone’s help.

…

As the new semester approached, Rong Jun finished his internship and returned home slightly later than usual. Stepping out of the office building, he spotted a familiar figure standing at the gate. His heart skipped a beat, and a bright smile spread across his face no matter how much he tried to stay calm.

“Yan Chen,” he called cheerfully.

The man outside immediately waved upon seeing him.

“Qingqing~”

The gatekeeper paused briefly before opening the gate, chuckling. “It’s been a while since you two saw each other. Working hard is good, but don’t forget the people around you.”

Rong Jun blushed, nodded politely, and was far too embarrassed to admit that just twelve hours earlier, they had shared a bed at home.

It’s not really that long that they haven’t seen each other yet somehow their reaction seems to be that way.

Yan Chen’s cooking had improved in leaps and bounds recently, and Rong Jun had become increasingly discerning.

“No, just asking.”

“Thank you for taking care of things these past few days. I’ll handle all the housework from now on.”

“I can only give you the kitchen for now,” Yan Chen said, “but taking care of you is one of my greatest pleasures.”

Rong Jun’s cheeks flushed slightly. He lowered his eyes, hiding his smile, and teased Yan Chen lightly, “Then your hobby is… quite unique.”

[Beep!]

All of a sudden, a notification lit up the phone on the table. Rong Jun glanced at it, and the name Rong Chu immediately caught his attention. He set down his chopsticks and opened the message.

After reading, he stood up looking somewhat anxious. “I need to make a phone call.”

Yan Chen nodded, following him with his gaze as Rong Jun moved to the living room balcony. He slid open the glass door, slipped into his slippers, closed the door again, and raised the phone to his ear.

When he returned, Yan Chen noticed the change in his expression and felt a twinge of worry.

“What happened?”

Rong Jun pursed his lips, still processing the information. After a pause, he spoke.

“The Rong family… has completely split apart.”

Yan Chen showed little surprise, sitting quietly as Rong Jun continued.

The two factions within the Rong family had been evenly matched. After six months of struggle, Rong Chu officially assumed the position of family head. However, Rong Li retained 23% of the Rong Group’s shares. Both sides had victories, but neither held absolute power.

Zhou Yinglan had divorced and left the family while Rong Chu’s mother was promoted as the legal wife, even Rong Chu himself was elevated from concubine to legitimate heir, inheriting the family legacy according to his father’s wishes.

As Rong Jun absorbed the outcome, which differed slightly from Rong Li’s original plan, the memory of what he had inadvertently witnessed six months ago resurfaced.

He couldn’t tell whether this result stemmed from Rong Li’s selfish motives or Rong Chu’s sheer strength.

But the past was unchangeable. All he could do now was move forward, protecting the family that had protected him, and the certain wolf who had stood by his side.

…

The remaining days at home passed comfortably. Rong Jun wasn’t fond of going out in winter, and with nothing pressing to do, he and Yan Chen watched a few movies in the living room, two or three of them were horror films.

He was actually a little timid, but he didn’t want to show it. So he told Yan Chen he felt cold, so Yan Chen transformed into his wolf form, and he nestled into Yan Chen’s arms, resting a paw on his shoulder for warmth.

Yan Chen saw through his thoughts, he chuckled quietly, and nudged his cheek with his nose, letting him behave as he pleased.

Modern horror films were immersive with high-quality visuals and sound that could deeply stir the senses. Even just the sound effects could send chills down the spine.

The scene reached a tense climax: a phone rang in the video, its crisp tone almost unbearable. Rong Jun held his breath, gripping the hand on his shoulder, slowly raising it to cover the lower half of his face. He swallowed, bracing for the next horrifying scene.

Then, as if fate were mocking him, a realistic ringtone rang loudly.

“Ahhh—!”

Rong Jun screamed in freight, startling Yan Chen, whose large body trembled from his scream.

“Qingqing, it’s just my phone,” Yan Chen reassured him. He shifted back into human form, picked it up, and muttered with a tender voice, “You can keep watching. No need to wait for me.”

Before Rong Jun could respond, Yan Chen had already vanished. Pausing the movie now would make him seem scared. So he curled up tighter against the sofa, trembling slightly, and continued watching, determined to maintain the brave facade of someone who was definitely not afraid of horror movies.

But of course he failed miserably with the act as he screamed loudly when a jumpscare came in the movie.
