Title: Satou-san’s contact information
The class atmosphere that had been happy after the school trip, it settled down after a few days.
Satou-san is the same as usual. She rolls over in his chair when she gets up from her seat, and if the teacher asks her a question in class, she turns red and stammers. She is slow to take notes and is grateful for my notes. On days when she has physical education classes, she looks a little depressed, but she seems to enjoy playing tag with her friends during her lunch break. Satou-san is always smiling when she talks to the other girls in her class. The childish smile on her face as she chimes in with someone else’s conversation is her usually on her face. I know the other face, though.
Towards the end of the lunch break, I was waiting for Satou-san to return to her seat after playing tag. I took out my textbook for my next class and waited, pretending to do some prep work.
“It’s hot today,”(S)
Satou-san, out of breath, takes a seat as she says this. She was fanning her face with her palms. The reason she doesn’t use an underlay is because her hands often slip and blow them away.
“It is hot.”(Y)
I nodded and closed the textbook. Then I cut straight to the chase.
“Sato-san, could you give me your contact information?”(Y)
“What?”(S)
Satou-san’s hand, which had been fanning her face, stopped as if it had run out of power. The surprised look on her face was to be expected. I couldn’t read the reaction beyond that, but I wasn’t about to back down now. I had simulated whatever reaction I might get.
“It’s a good thing we’re sitting next to each other, because we’ve got a lot to talk about.”(Y)
I tell her in a manner that has no pretense. Still, my true feelings are deftly concealed.
“I was hoping I’d be able to talk more. No?”(Y)
When I ended up saying what I was thinking about it, Satou-san blinked a lot and then replied curtly.
“Okay but … are you sure? Yamaguchi-kun.”(S)
“No, why? I’m the one who asked you to tell me.”(Y)
In contrast to my bright smile, she looked down.
“Because I didn’t expect you to ask me.”(S)
Sweat was on her forehead as she ran around during her lunch break. Her single knot of hair was frayed and not yet retied. Her cheeks were bright red and upturned, and her shoulders floated heavily.
Satou-san, oblivious to my unassuming gaze, kept her head down and continued,
“I, if you are okay with me……..I’d like to know your contact information.”(S)
“Yeah, good.”(Y)
I was relieved deep down inside, ostensibly unconcerned, I handed her the paper I had prepared. On it is my phone number and ID that I wrote down during my lunch break.
Satou-san’s hand received the note. She stared at it and traced it with her eyes. Then, with clumsy hands, she folded the four corners together neatly and tucked it into his uniform’s breast pocket.
“Well, me too.”(S)
She started to say this and reached for her pen case. She opened the lid and took out a sharpie, almost pulling it open quickly as if she was in a hurry. After that, she began to look around for something to write on, so I handed her a blank piece of memo paper.
“Could you write on this, please?”(Y)
“Oh, yes, thank you.”(S)
Satou-san thanked me dutifully and began to write in her info. So far, everything has gone as smoothly as planned.
“Here you go,”(S)
Satou-fan was quick to finish writing. I read the writing on the note she returned to me and saw that the ID was just her name in romaji form. I pulled out my cell phone and told her as I typed in her data with one hand.
“Thanks for giving me your info, I’ll message you later.”(Y)
“No, you’re welcome.”(S)
After shaking her head, Satou-san looked like she realized something.
“I didn’t bring my phone to school so I won’t be able to answer your messages until tonight, okay?”(S)
“It’s fine I’ll wait.”(Y)
I had heard that story before. Satou-san was slow to type a sentence, so she would think long and hard before responding at night. Back then, I still couldn’t admit to my feelings for Satou-san. I also had mixed feelings of jealousy about the person she was connected to. I felt very happy that she spent all day thinking about her replies, thinking carefully and carefully, and then responding to them. I can honestly say that now.
“Yamaguchi-kun.”(S)
Satou-san said as she clumsily re-knotted her messy hair.
“Keep up the good work, okay?”(S)
The sly smile caught me off guard, and my breath caught me off guard. But soon, I faked an expression.
“You too.”(Y)
I gave her the same friendly smile. I won’t even let my true feelings out. Maybe I’m a good at keeping my true feelings to myself. I hope I will continue to be a good friend, Satou-san. After a bit, the chime sounded, signaling the start of fifth period. Thanks to that, I didn’t have to make up any more laughs.
It worked. In class, I looked at that notepaper in the shadows of my textbook and patted my chest down. I traced her round little letters with my fingers. Once again, I observe that she writes pretty cute characters. It must be because she has such small characters that she’s slow to write them down. Satou-san’s profile, which I stole a look at, was a blur. I don’t know if she’s listening to her teacher or not – though I can’t speak for her either.
When I got back from the school trip, I thought about it for a minute. Maybe I should just give it up, I thought. There was someone she liked. I have a bad feeling about this, but it seems that she has a straight-up crush on him. When I thought about it, I couldn’t help but feel frustrated.
It’s a strange interpretation that I’m a ‘person from another world’ and that this person, whose face I don’t even know, is someone from the same world as you, who is close to you. He is supposed to be closer to you than I am to you, but I’m sitting right next to you. So I don’t feel like giving up on him. Somehow, I can close the distance between us and someday I’ll be able to convince you that I’m closer to you than he is. It’s not easy, of course. Even so, I don’t want to give up the feelings I had finally found out. I’m the kind of villain who would say terrible things to Satou-san anyway. So, I wanted to be the bad guy and make her give up her unsuitable and insecure love and turn to me.
I like Satou-san. I was too slow to notice. He already has gained a tremendous advantage. But I can’t give up. I’m going to give him a run for his money. She told me that I can do anything. She told me that I could do it all. She told me that I have many things that she doesn’t, and that I can do things that she can’t. I believe her words more than anything else. I know it’s a nuisance to her, but I still believe in my love.
