Chapter 17 - Reminiscence of A Certain Girl I [GIRL A POV]

5 min read1,313 wordsMature

The first time I, Joze Recall, met that ‘person’ was some time after the entrance exam ceremony. It was around the time when I, who was isolated by my classmates and had no one I could call friends, spent my breaktime at a small garden in the one of the academy’s corner.

Despite the fact that I am a commoner, due to my father’s background as an influential merchant along with his encouragement that women should take up the pen, I was blessed with an adequate learning environment ever since I was young. Moreover, since I had the aptitude for sorcery, my father also tried to check the amount of my mana. The result of the check was positive, meaning I had enough mana to use sorcery.

Thanks to that, I was given a choice to continue my study in the Royal Academy.

Regardless of genders, Sorcerer was a rare existence in Helios Kingdom. And amongst the sorcerers, though it was a rare happenstance, there were women amongst the rank of Royal Sorcerers, and some of them even climbed through the ranks and managed to rise as high as the leader of the Royal Sorcerers.

Moreover, even if for example, I couldn’t find a job after I graduated from the Royal Academy, I still had an alternative of working as the sorcerer for my own home, joining my father’s company. Like, casting water and ice sorcery to keep foodstuffs fresh, or casting earth and stone sorcery for construction purposes. So, it was still a good decision no matter what.

However, the concept of using sorcery for everyday life wasn’t that popular in Helios Kingdom. Some people even scorned it. But I knew that this concept was popularized in the majority of foreign countries. And both my father and I felt that Helios Kingdom should choose a similar approach instead of being chained by tradition.

However, the day for that to happen seemed to still be at a far distant future. The main reason for that was because the nobility in this Kingdom thought that sorcery’s talent and ability were the mark of chosen people, in other word, of nobility. So, the thought of using it for the sake of people had never even crossed their mind.

Many people think that the ability to use sorcery was the proof of noble blood. But, if that was the case, then why did such ability appear amongst the commoner as well? That question burned in many people’s mind.

Yet, those nobles’ responses to the question was to regard it as a ‘silly mistake’. They even went as far as saying that the commoners were the ‘Demon’s Offspring’. And, even if we told those nobles to fix those ‘silly mistakes’ of theirs, they didn’t even deign to lend their ears.

As for whether those words could be said out loud or not…well, as you could see, it was in fact the reason why I am isolated in my class. I really wondered which part of my words had wronged my classmates. After all, I had just stated the truth. [ED: Urm…your social awareness is on another level.]

At the time I entered this academy, I came to know that this academy had been split into two factions. The faction of the noble childrens who disliked commoners, which had the majority of the people. And the faction of commoners who hated nobles.

Due to these two factions…one couldn’t rely on their social status and treated either side as equal. That way only led to…being looked down by both factions.

That’s why the other commoners in my class, except for me, were trying to act wise. Or rather, should I say that they were refusing to see the bigger picture? In any case, they didn’t try to disobey the nobles in the class, as such they followed along with their act, treating me like a mere air.

Then again, it’s not like I’m in the right either. In fact, in this regard, since my outspoken personality gained me most of the nobles’ animosity in my class, and resulted in me losing my place in it…means that I’m in the wrong.

Then again, I came to this academy not for showboating. I came to this place to learn. And that’s why, something like being isolated was not a big deal for me. Besides, even though the nobles treated me like some sort of foreign object, they didn’t do anything directly to me so far, so I figure it’s fine. Since I didn’t encounter any problem up to now.

However, no matter how much I endure, my heart was still that of a young child. I had no one to talk to since I basically had no friends in the class, so I could only turn to constant studying. It was not a bad thing to do…except for the fact that I became more tired mentally than expected.

That day, I was crying alone in that garden.

I swear that it wasn’t my intention to cry like this.

Originally, I was sitting alone in the garden chair, looking at the blooming flower. And yet, without noticing it…tears couldn’t stop flowing out of my eyes.

Aah, I guess this situation was too painful for me.

My mental strength was slowly sapped just by living in this academy.

I finally understand the reason for my tears.

Nevertheless, it didn’t mean that I could change anything about my own situation. Those awful people would still stay as my classmates until we graduate from this academy three years later, which means that I had to endure this situation for three more years. All the while striving forward with my study to become a sorcerer.

That’s why…I couldn’t keep feeling down like this. No. No way. So I braced my legs to stand up. To fight against the nobles…

Yet, despite trying to encourage myself, my legs still refused to stand. Even though it was almost time for the next lesson. And my tears still continued to flow out ceaselessly even with my hands wiping at it…my heart was just too wounded right then to do anything.

Ah, someone.

Someone please… Save me.

Right when I pleaded like that.

「… Can you tell me what happened to you?」

A voice called out to me.

Surprised, I raised my head immediately.

The reason for my surprise was because there should be no one else but me who knew of this garden. It is located in a rather peculiar and remote spot within the academy after all. And discovering this place wasn’t that simple. Finding this place was akin to finding a certain desolated place in the academy during a certain time.

And yet….

Another surprise came to assault me.

Standing in front of me was an extremely beautiful person.

Long and glossy black hair, which couldn’t be found amongst commoners like me. A pair of shiny-crimson red eyes which could be mistaken as ruby. With skin that’s whiter than snow and a perfectly balanced figure with curves and constrictions in the right place.

With just a glance, this person was just like a goddess. Moreover, she wasn’t only gifted with beauty. Something about the air around her made me want to prostrate myself before her as well. Yet, it didn’t feel coercive at all. It just…felt like that air was gently enveloping me.

Thus, I called that person’s name.

「Maria-….-Sama…」
