Chapter 18 - Reminiscence of A Certain Girl II[GIRL A POV]

Maria Di Lino.
Who in this academy hasn’t heard of her name?
Even though she was a freshman who’d enrolled only this year, everyone in the entire academy knew about her…
There were two reasons for that. First, her ducal house, the Di Lino, was one of the pillars of theKingdom of Helios. Second. She was engaged to the 1st Prince of the Kingdom of Helios. At first glance, one’s social status holds no meaning in this academy, but everyone knows it’s nothing more than a pretense.
To put it simply, even though students should associate with each other regardless of their social status, they would unconsciously think about what’s going to happen after graduation. The academy was a place where one’s social status could protect or destroy you. Only an extreme minority of nobles didn’t go around swaging their social position.
However, most of those students held a social status so high that they didn’t even need to be concerned about other’s social position.
Even I, as a commoner, know that I have to be careful with only the lower rank nobles and the likes.
I’ve wondered before why the academy’s founders make a law about not to discriminate based on one’s social rank. I kept on asking myself this question over and over again. Yet, I could never reach an answer. I guess no one ever can.
Thus, it became an open secret that Maria Di Lino was a woman who had the second highest social status in this academy. Though her status was below His Highness Rafael, I have a feeling that even His Highness cannot go against her.
And, right now, if I had to express my feelings when someone of her status suddenly called out to me– I was…
Well, who could blame me when I ended up flapping my mouth without making a sound? It was like I had stumbled upon an Armored Bear in the depths of the forest. After all, Maria-sama, the high noble lady, gave me the answer I was looking for.
「… What’s the matter, you look like a fish out of the water? Moreover… You have tears in your eyes. What is making you this sad? 」
She spoke to me with an extremely gentle voice. I was really surprised.
To the point of being speechless.
I used to believe that her usual voice carried a certain power that made you unable to ignore her. It’s as if an unimaginable amount of mana was imbued in her voice that forced people to reply to her. I’ve never seen anyone outside of the student council’s members being able to resist the weight of her words.
Against all odds, such a woman was speaking to me with such a gentle voice. My mind drew a blank for a moment.
But, I couldn’t stay silent forever and not answer her question. That would be incredibly rude of me. Yet, my mind was thrown into chaos as I wondered how I could reply Maria-sama.
「U-Uhm…. I-I… am just a little sad about a matter that happened in my classroom…」
「Is that so? Will you share a bit of your story with me then?」
Under normal circumstances, I would refuse to tell such a story to a noble. Yet, somehow, it was different with Maria-sama. I just unconsciously opened my mouth and retold my tale.
「I….. I!!!」
And, as if a dam just broke open, I told her everything that happened to me in class up until now.
「… I see. It must have been hard on you, Jose… I, however, don’t think you are in the wrong. The academy policy states that every student is able to mingle with each other regardless of their status. So, for this reason, be proud of yourself.」
「Maria-sama… Aren’t you afraid someone will know that you feel the same as I do?」
「You have a point. However, given my status, I doubt I will have any problem with my statement. Besides, although our opinion is true to some extent, it doesn’t mean things will change anytime soon. That’s why I also think having the students used to that school of thoughts isn’t the wrong choice.」
「I see… So, Maria-sama is also…」
So, it means that I could never become her ally; me the commoner and her the noble.
I felt a bit disappointed thinking about it
But then, while I was feeling disappointed, Maria-sama continued speaking.
「For now… the current situation is indeed like this. However, it isn’t because I can’t change things. It’s simply because right now, the gap between the noble and the commoner has yet to completely disappear in our kingdom due to our political climate. However, since there are so many kingdoms in this world, so is their political climate too. For example, though our kingdom has different ranks for nobility and commoners, in some other kingdoms, this doesn’t exist. Or perhaps, you’ve heard of a kingdom that treats everyone equally?」
「That kind of kingdom is….」
I’ve never heard of such a kingdom before, and I’m confident about my knowledge of foreign kingdoms from my father’s work as a merchant. Therefore, I’m somewhat more knowledgeable than some common noble students, and yet…
Maria-sama, this high born lady, was the one who told me about it.
「That kingdom is not on this continent for sure, but all the way across the ocean. An employee in my house came from there and told me they boarded a ship to our continent. That person told me many stories from travel and some were from that country. It is a faraway place, but that kind of human kingdom does exist. That’s why, I do not think that it is impossible for Helios to become similar to such a country someday in the future. So, don’t lose hope.」
「Yes, but…………. Uhm, is it really okay for you to tell me all this, Maria-sama?! 」
「Fufufu…. I understand your concern. I mean, I am not looking down on you while telling this. I just feel that a system based on dividing its people based on birth is unpleasant. 」
「Then,….」
「Nonetheless, I do not think that our current system is completely wrong either. Why don’t you think about it, Jose? Imagine, someday, someone wants to topple the nobles and build a brand new country. What do you think will happen?」
「At that time… that someone will become the leader of the new kingdom….」
「Exactly! That leader will automatically become a noble, right?」
「… Ah. Still, since that person opposed the nobles, something like that shouldn’t….」
「Are you absolutely sure that something like that definitely won’t happen? When I was a child, I used to play many games with my cousins and my siblings. When things gradually heated up and everyone wanted to take the lead and things went out of control; we would start to quarrel among ourselves. In the end, our fathers would give us a severe scolding and have us apologize to each other in tears.」
Maria-sama was telling me her story with a gorgeous smile on her face.
However, I kept on feeling that she wanted to hint something to me through her tale.
「Are they going to compete with each other…. To size more power?」
「Perhaps. That’s why, the most difficult thing is to make people stop fighting each other. If somehow, that can happen, the kingdom might be reborn as a place where everyone is noble. Although… even my employee, who was born overseas, has no idea on how to stop people from fighting each other. But still, the kingdom where everyone is treated equally must be the closest one to that ideal. Hence, someday, I would like to go across the ocean to witness that place with my own eyes… 」
