Chapter 19 - Reminiscence of A Certain Girl III[GIRL A POV]

Ever since that day, I would always talk with Maria-sama in that place. We would have fun talking about various topics. To be honest, at first, I couldn’t believe I could talk with Maria-sama this freely. But, Maria-sama didn’t seem to care about it as she just listened to my stories with a bright smile on her face.

Not only that… Maria-sama also told me various stories of her own too.

Like the other day when we talked about the economy or politics of foreign nations . Sometimes, we also talked about their nature and cultures.

For example…

「Ara, Jose. I found a rare flower in this place. The one I told you before, remember? Even though this flower wasn’t even here few days ago…」

Maria-sama stood up in delight as she pointed at the inconspicuous spot inside this plaza. When I followed her finger, true enough, I saw a pale red flower that wasn’t there a few days ago.

「… You’re right. That’s a Ryushouka’s Dragon Calling flower.」

「Yes. It’s a dangerous flower that has another name, “Dragon Calling”. It’s fairly safe around here since there’s only Demi-Dragon living in Helios, but…. We’re advised to retreat as soon as we find this flower growing en-masse in the west of Alwatori Kingdom.」

「Just like its name, it’s a flower that calls a dragon to it…. On the other hand, it also means this flower can be used to hunt dragons.」

Dragon was an existence akin to a pile of treasures.

It’s an existence placed amongst the biggest and most powerful demons out there. No brave warriors would dare to challenge it from the front.

Although there’s a legend about a knight who managed to defeat the dragon, in truth, it needed plenty of preparation and a prayer for a miracle for one to be able to defeat them. It was that kind of opponent. One of the reasons for this was because of the mighty power of the dragon itself. The other reason was how those warriors kept their calm upon meeting one.

How would they cope with the dragon’s air attack? And, even if they managed to inflict a fatal wound on the dragon, how would they prevent the said dragon from escaping at the last moment? Their hardship would be all for nothing if it escaped after all, which was quite easy for the dragon, considering its wingspan.

But, the dragon’s movements would be restricted as long as there’s a Dragon Calling flower. In short, its presence made the hunt of a dragon relatively easy, or so I originally thought.

But then, Maria-sama proceeded to explain to me, who was thinking naively.

「While it’s true you can lead them to a trap, dragons still aren’t the kind of creatures you can defeat that easily… Even back in the natural habitat of this Dragon Calling flower, there are numerous stories about foolish people who tried to lure a dragon using this flower, only to end up in that dragon’s stomach. That’s why, it’s better if you never think about doing that sort of reckless action, Jose.」

I was really embarrassed when she reminded me of the dangers.

However, it’s not like being reminded like this would change someone’s mind who intended to challenge a dragon despite the fact that history had proven it impossible.

Though I thought that, I didn’t voice it out as I was afraid I had just made Maria-sama angry.

「M-My apologies… I just…」

But, Maria-sama only gently spoke to me, who had thought I had disappointed her at that time.

「No need to apologize. It’s a nice thing if hunting a dragon can be that easy. I won’t blame you for thinking up that hunting plan. But, do remember there’s good dragon and evil dragon too… So, please excuse the good one.」

Good dragon was the name used to refer to the arbitrator dragon who appeared naturally to manage the animal’s or the demon’s territory.

On the contrary, evil dragon was the name used to refer to the dragon who loved treasures and a destroyer who wreaked havoc in its wake.

The dragon that was defeated in the tales was always the latter one.

Naturally, I won’t go as far as thinking about hunting the good dragon. Since there’s no knowing what was going to happen should one defeat them.

Amongst the most dangerous possibilities that might happen should one defeat the good dragon were the risk of stampedes or mana distortion.

Both of those were great disasters for human beings.

Maria-sama revealed a heartfelt smile upon seeing my nod of understanding. She then turned around to look at the flower again.

「Nevertheless… Dragon Calling flower is truly a beautiful flower. The color of the petals turn darker following the rise in temperature is a sight to behold. So, although walking all the way to this place in the middle of hot summer is a major pain, I can’t just let the opportunity to see this flower’s most beautiful moment slip by….」

When I heard Maria-sama muttering those words, an idea suddenly came to my mind.

「Then, how about putting it in the pot to decorate your room? I don’t know about this darkened color things of Dragon Calling flower, but the library might have a book about this flower and the details needed to care for it…」

I proposed to her.

But, as I spoke, I realized my plan might sound as foolish as before. So, my voice trailed off as I spoke, and almost vanished at the end. I thought I was being too naive since there’s no way Maria-sama hadn’t considered this option before…

And, I was afraid that she might truly hate me for my naivety now…

Yet, Maria-sama’s cheerful tone, as she spoke, soothed my fears away.

「Oh, nice idea, Jose. I’ve never thought to find a method to raise it since my knowledge about the Dragon Calling flower is limited to general knowledge about its nature. I don’t know whether they have such a book about it in the library, but… I suppose trying to look for it won’t hurt us any…」

「Well considering its size, I’m quite sure our academy’s library has such a book. Even if the library doesn’t have one, I think that book exist.」

「Oh my, how are you so sure?」

「To be honest, the reason I managed to find this place is because the academy’s gardener told me about the position of this garden. That’s why I’m sure that gardeners have detailed information about the flower in this place too…. Thus, we might be able to ask for that person’s help.」

「Really! May I ask your help in that regard then? To be honest, I want to go with you too, but… I’m almost sure that my sudden appearance will shock that poor gardener, right? That’s why…」

I understood what Maria-sama was troubled about. Because even I, a student, would never have expected Maria-sama to have such a surprisingly lovely personality and was quite easy going at that.

I mean, nobles were typically… Or rather, all nobles save royalty mistook themselves as the chosen one and were always looking down on the commoners. Thus, if Maria-sama made a request to the gardener, that person might mistake it as an order and not a request from her.

That’s why I agreed with Maria-sama that she shouldn’t meet that gardener with me.

「It’s all right! I mean… I’m that person’s acquaintance since the quite a long time now.」

「That’s great, but may I ask how you got acquainted with that person?」

「That person is my childhood friend. Despite being a merchant, my father is acquainted with a plant merchant, and that person’s grandchild is my childhood friend…」

My childhood friend’s father was also a plant merchant like his grandfather. So, ever since he was young, he was trained in plants. Therefore, I believe my childhood friend should have a rich knowledge about how to raise a plant and their characteristics. In fact, that person becoming a gardener in this academy was also a part of training.

It rather surprised me to reunite with that person in this academy though. Then again, that also allowed me to learn about this place.

Although I still had to find the place myself, I was still really glad when I found this place.

「I guess it’s safe then. Even so, make sure you tell me if something happens, okay?」

Hearing Maria-sama’s words made me really happy. Because that meant she truly cared about me! Still, I believed there’s really no need for her to worry about this matter since I know that person.

Thus, I told Maria-sama.

「It’ll be all right. Please look forward to the potted Dragon Calling Flower, Maria-sama.」
