Screeech—!
It was still early morning when the harsh squeal of the assembly bell pierced through the prison again.
The dawn light broke through the morning fog and stained the high platform in a myriad of pink and purple hues.
This was Bai Zhi’s second time standing on top of the platform.
Last time, amidst chaos and confusion, she somehow became a temporary prison guard. Today, she’s here to exercise the power of that position.
Everything happened so quickly, and before she knew it, she was apart of the game.
On the high platform, she could easily see everyone’s expressions. Zhao Zixun stood calmly with a determined look on his face. Xiang Chen, on the other hand, was leaning against the glass barrier in his usual lazy manner. His eyes, however, followed her expectantly. In another corner of the hall, Gu Ze turned when he saw her. He grinned—his face lit up with a bright white smile. She spotted Zheng Ze as well. His eyes were full of anger, confusion, and denial. Lastly, there was Xiao Yang and Gao Qiu. Xiao Yang had his arms crossed in front of his chest, and his narrow eyes scrutinized the stage. He seemed curious. Meanwhile, Gao Qiu was watching Xiao Yang—he was always watching Xiao Yang.
Li Xiao had been detained in the infirmary by Ye Xiao, so neither of them was present.
Bai Zhi turned to look at Di Qing and Lu Ye. The glare on Di Qing’s glasses prevented her from seeing his expressions clearly, but Lu Ye smiled and nodded at her.
She took a deep breath and announced in a very direct manner, “The purpose for this impromptu meeting is to exempt Zhao Zixun and Xiang Chen from the curfew for the next two nights.”
Her voice was not very loud but it was still able to carry into every corner of the assembly hall.
Zheng Ze was wrapped in bandages. He glared in disbelief and complained loudly, “What the fuck… For what reason?”
“This is my right as a prison guard,” Bai Zhi responded frankly. She thought about it all night, but she couldn’t come up with any valid reasons.
Xiao Yang raised a thin arm. “Officer Di, Officer Lu, I also want to be exempted from the curfew.”
Bai Zhi took a step back in surprise. She helplessly looked back at Di Qing and Lu Ye.
“It’s not that we can’t…” Di Qing smiled, “But why should we? What can you offer us?”
“I can follow them and report back to you,” Xiao Yang replied.
“That’s not necessary,” Lu Ye sneered. “You’re not their match. If I wanted them followed, it would better to just do it myself. I don’t need you to do it.”
“… Then what do you want?” Xiao Yang asked, his voice rising.
“I want to know your real rule.” Di Qing said.
Xiao Yang squinted his eyes and looked at Di Qing with murderous intent. Zheng Ze, on the other hand, was thinking about what Zhao Zixun had said the night before. It had planted a seed of doubt in the back of his mind. He examined Xiao Yang, studying him up and down.
Xiao Yang lowered his head and sneered, “Why do you want to know my rules?”
“It’s just a deal for waiving your curfew, there’s no other reason,” Di Qing responded in a hushed voice. “You can come up to tell me quietly, no one else will know.”
A ladder rose up from the ground. Xiao Yang’s expression grew steadily uglier.
“Three nights! I want my curfew waived for three nights.” Xiao Yang bartered.
“Fine.” Di Qing pushed up his glasses. He watched Xiao Yang take one step at a time onto the platform.
Xiao Yang approached Di Qing and leaned in close to his ear. Cupping his mouth so that no one could read his lips, he whispered a few words.
The words were said so quietly that Bai Zhi could not make out a single word.
Di Qing nodded, and he looked to Lu Ye. Their exchange was subtle, but it gave off a sneaky feeling as if they were concealing something important.
Xiao Yang walked back down the steps and returned to his original position.
“You were too reckless. Exposing your rule is dangerous.” Gao Qiu said worriedly.
Xiao Yang shook his head wearily, “The next few nights are critical. We can’t lose any momentum here.”
