Chapter 8 of 19

Vol 2 chapter 2 – Strange egoist

11 min read2,762 words

When I say “tenfold payback,” I can’t just suddenly kill everyone without question. All we have to do is take back what was taken from us, talk to them, and ask them to show us their sincerity.

Let’s be civilized, and let’s be OHANASHI. If they still resort to violence, I don’t need to be shy, and I’m ready to be SATSUGAI.

As usual, we applied mud and stuck branches and leaves on our bodies. I camouflage myself with the image of a ghillie suit.

While it is still dark, we head for the village based on the little moonlight we have. We wait at a place a short distance from the town and wait for dawn.

After a while, dawn broke. Still, in the dim light, we approached the village cautiously.

From the top of a tree a little farther away, we looked at the village. They seemed to be living as usual. They didn’t seem to be alarmed that I had escaped.

Some villagers were working on their farms, but only a few. It was still early, so they were probably eating breakfast at home. Smoke from cooking was coming from the houses.

Many of the houses are poorly built and would collapse at the first blow. The lifestyle is like that of a medieval village, but there seems to be a hygiene sense. The streets are not covered with faeces.

It is a type of village where the fields are inside the fence. The areas are right next to the houses, and the distance between the places is quite large.

The villagers are all Anglo-Saxon and have the typical Western appearance that Japanese people imagine. There was no one with the same facial features as me.

Many of them were thin and about the same height as me, perhaps due to lack of nutrition. But they had long legs. My waist is utterly different from theirs.

I tried to read the lips of the villagers, but it was impossible. Part of it was the distance, but the pronunciation seemed to be different from Japanese.

The hypothesis that people from other worlds can understand Japanese because they speak it was proven wrong. The idea that people from different worlds speak Japanese was proven wrong.

The fact that words such as “Seriously? and other words like that seem that what I wanted to say was converted into the other side’s language.

Subtle nuances seemed to have been conveyed, and vice versa.

It’s as if I don’t understand the language itself, but can understand it with my senses.

A half-baked language cheat, as expected of that God-given cheat ability. There is now a possibility that he can’t read.

I observed the village while thinking about this, but I didn’t find anything strange. After a while, a village girl came out of the infirmary-like place where I was lying.

She seemed to have gone to the well to get some water. The villagers around me seemed distant. Their attitude toward the girl was subtle. I wondered if the village was being ostracized for letting me go.

I felt a tightening sensation in my chest. It’s dangerous, but I need to get a little closer and see what’s going on.

I remove the camouflage that is attached to my body. As I approached the village, I climbed over a crude wooden fence to avoid the monsters.

Then I heard a noise coming from one of the buildings. There seemed to be many partiers making a lot of noise in the morning, and their voices were leaking out of the building.

I approached cautiously, paying attention to my surroundings, and put my ear against the wall to eavesdrop on the conversation. It seemed that my language cheat was working and I could understand what they were saying.

“Finally, the old medicine woman’s gone.”

“It’s going to be a lot easier now.”

“But will the apprentice’s daughter be enough?”

“She’s got the job well under her belt.”

“Well, then we’ll have to get her some night work.”

“Ha-ha-ha-ha.”

“Unlike the old lady, she’s weak. We can do whatever we want.”

“But she’s so plain. I wish she were prettier and firmer.”

“Don’t be extravagant, and young women are precious in the village.”

“I don’t know.”

They were having a disturbing conversation. I felt terrible but decided to continue listening for a while. These guys had been drinking since yesterday and were having the same drunken conversation over and over again.

I listened patiently to the drunken conversation, which went in and out of loops, and summarized the contents. It was a disgusting story to listen to.

The old lady was a famous medicine woman in the capital. Nobles and big merchants visited her incessantly, clamouring for the high-quality medicines she made. She got tired of it and came back to her birthplace, a village in the countryside.

In a rural village, even catching a cold can be fatal. Therefore, the presence of a medicine man is precious. A good medicine man was famous in the capital. In a rural village, his value is immeasurable.

Naturally, his position in the village will increase. As his influence declined, the village chief felt threatened and tried to control the old medicine woman with violence.

However, the old medicine woman was of a high level. She was also in possession of dangerous poisons, etc., and the village chiefs were repulsed.

The older woman, angry at being attacked, charged the village chief for expensive medical treatment at every turn. The older woman, angry at being attacked, demanded the village chief pay for her medical treatment.

It seems that these people who are drinking and making a fool of themselves are the village chief’s idiot son and his cronies. Now that the old medicine woman is dead, the village chief is the only person in power.

So they’re getting carried away.

The village girl who healed me is a good person. In Japan, she would have been respected as a beautiful person. But in this world, it’s just a negative.

Envy, jealousy, and such negative emotions are swirling around in the closed village.

Even in today’s peaceful Japan, I often hear people say, “When I built a new house, the people around me were jealous and harassed me. This is a typical story in the countryside.

In a rural village where life is hard, there is a precious existence of a medicine man who radiates kindness. I wonder how much jealousy and hatred is gathering among the village girls.

The village girl doesn’t understand that. Even if they do, they can’t change their way of life. They may not be able to change their beliefs.

Unlike the old lady, she has no fighting skills and tries to dominate the village girls with violence. The women of the village seem to tolerate it.

Jealousy is a terrible thing.

I’ve been living a solitary life as a wildling for a long time. The fact that the first human emotion I had felt in a long time was jealousy and ugly desires made me nauseous and sick.

The horror and filthiness of people, so well hidden in modern society, had been slammed into me with such high density that I felt my heart turn black.

Should I just jump in and kill all these people? Or should I just set fire to the village and destroy it all? I almost surrendered to the dark, yet somehow sweet urge of destruction.

The frightened and unreliable face of the village girl comes to my mind.

Even if they are scum like this, the village girl will be sad if I kill them. That thought calmed me down.

I had the information. Let’s talk to the village girl. She’s a disciple of a famous medicine man. There’s no need to stick to this village. I’m sure I can survive in a bigger town.

There’s no need to keep yourself tied up in this village. You can take the older woman’s message and become a medicine man in the capital or another town.

I carefully searched for signs and avoided people as I made my way to the village girl’s clinic. I searched for signs of life inside the building, but I could only sense the presence of one person. The village girl seemed to be alone.

Now was my chance. I quickly entered the infirmary without being seen. When I entered the clinic, I found the village girl crushing dry grass with a mortar-like tool.

I approached her from behind and called out to her.

“Hey, a village girl.”

“What? What?”

I quickly covered the screaming village girl’s mouth.

“Calm down. It’s me, you see?”

I asked the girl as I covered her mouth, and she shook her head. I gently release her mouth from its confines.

“You’re a goblin, right? I’m glad to see you’re doing well.”

“I’m not a goblin! But that’s not the point right now. I need to talk to you, okay?”

“Yes, I’m fine.”

“Was it the village girl who healed me the other day?”

“Yes. Did I do something wrong?”

“No, it was perfect. No, it was perfect. You saved my life. Thank you.”

“Well, I’m glad.”

I thanked him for the treatment and got down to business. The village chief’s idiot son and his cronies. I told her about the village chief’s idiot son and his cronies, and how the whole village was silent.

The village girl listened to everything in silence. She did not cry but listened intently.

“I think you should leave this village. Don’t you have any acquaintances somewhere else?”

“I have a sister apprentice in Rock Cliff, the largest town in Count Megan’s domain.”

“Let’s go there. I’ll guarantee your safety along the way. I can take care of a few monsters and bandits.”

“Why are you doing this for me?”

“Because I owe you my life. I owe you my life, and our family tradition is to return the favour twice.”

“I appreciate the sentiment. But I’ll stay in the village.”

“What are you talking about? I know you don’t believe me when I show up out of the blue, but it’s not safe for you to stay in this village.”

“I can see that the goblin is not lying. I know the goblin is not lying, and I know the chief’s son is not either.”

“Then why do you insist on staying in the village?”

Returning the favour is a tricky thing to do. I know that the best thing to do is to help people do what they want. But what if that desire is wrong?

Forcing your values on someone is not repayment. But how can you leave a benefactor who is willing to be treated like a slave?

Even if he wanted to be treated like a slave, I couldn’t understand it. I couldn’t help but raise my voice at my benefactor.

“When I was very young, my parents died of an epidemic, and my medicine woman raised me. I was born in this village and have lived here all my life. I know that everyone in the village hates me. Even so, they have lived with me all these years. They may not understand me now, but I believe that one day they will.”

I think this girl is an irrepressible good-natured person who is a good-natured person.

I think she is a good-natured person who knows everything but still decides to trust people and live with faith.

Believe in them, and believe in the scum of this village until they are abused, worn down, and their humanity dies. Oh no, I’ll never repay you. Forgive me, a village girl.

“Village girl, pack up your valuables and prepare to travel so you can go into town.”

“I’ll stay in the village.”

“I will stay in the village,” she said quietly and firmly. How dazzling, how precious. This is not repayment. This is my ego and selfishness.

If the village is going to bind the village girl, I will destroy this village.

I’ll kill many people to save one, for one who doesn’t want to be saved. It’s insane, but I’m okay with it. I’m a wildling, a barbarian without civilization. I kill because I don’t like it, and that’s okay.

I narrowed my eyes and said with honest intent to kill.

“I’m going to take back what was taken from me, a village girl. I mean the package, the hobgoblin.”

“It’s …….”

“I don’t think the greedy village chief will meekly give it back. I have almost killed myself. If you get into trouble, I won’t go easy on you. The worst that can happen is that people will die and this village will not be able to function as a village.”

The village girl did not ask me to stop. If she asks me to stop, she can stop me from doing what I feel I owe her. She must have understood that.

Still, she didn’t ask me to stop. It was the village chief’s fault. He stole something and tried to kill me, and the victim of the theft took back what was stolen. That’s all there is to it.

The village girl, who knew which was worse, couldn’t ask him to stop even if she wanted him to.

I’m saying this with that understanding. She’s trying to do something that her benefactor doesn’t want her to do. But I won’t stop, I will destroy this village. That’s what I’ve decided.

“But I’m staying.”

“I hope you’re not foolish enough to think I’ll stay.”

“It’s …….”

“When a village can no longer be sustained, people will simply scatter to other villages and towns. There will be no village left. Besides, you have a responsibility, village girl.”

“Responsibility?”

“Yes. Yes, you have a responsibility to use your skills as an apothecary to help many people and pass on your knowledge to future generations. If you have learned a great skill, you must pass it on. That’s what you’re supposed to do. Just like the old lady who raised you.”

The village girl twisted her face in anguish. It was the first time I had seen this expression. It was the first time I had seen such a name. I thought to myself, after letting her do so.

“If we can talk it out, that’s fine. I won’t make any moves. Still, be prepared. If I get into trouble with the villagers, I’m sure some of them will resent you for treating my injuries and try to harm me. I’m sorry it’s my fault, but it’s better to go to town than to waste your life in a rural village. It’s better to go to town than to waste your life in a village in the countryside, and to preserve the old medicine woman’s excellent skills for future generations.”

If the discussion could be settled amicably, it would be as the village girl wished. We can continue to live in the village as before and work hard until everyone changes their minds. That’s what I said to myself.

But we should just prepare for the worst. I said. The village girl replied in a small voice, “I understand,” and began to prepare.

I don’t think she was convinced at all. I don’t believe the greedy village chief would agree to a discussion. Nevertheless, the village girl would pray that no one would be hurt.

I’m sorry, a village girl. Even if the village chief tries to agree to a discussion, I will kill him by making him do something impossible.

Usually, I would not accept such a crazy story. But the old medicine woman is dead, and the villagers are trying to oppress me. There was no way he could make a favourable decision in such a situation.

He goes to the town to escort the person who killed so many people in his village. It was impossible to think usually. I’m going to push through while I’m still confused.

If the villagers die and the village collapses, there will be no choice. Even if they hate me, I’ll be the only one keeping.

As I was thinking about this, I felt a presence heading towards the infirmary. There were five of them. The idiot son and his cronies or ……. They were drunk and trying to get their hands on the village girl. ……

Just in time. I wanted to do this before the village girl recovered from her confusion. Nice timing, idiot son. I’ll reward you with a bloodbath.
