Vol 2 chapter 1 – Brainy thoughts

4 min read1,098 words

A week has passed since I returned to the base. The wound on my shoulder is completely healed, and the broken bone is a little sore, but I’ve recovered to a level where I can move normally.

I wondered if it was the benefit of levelling up. Or was it the increased vitality from living in the wild? Either way, it was a fantastic recovery speed.

It was good that my injuries were healed, but I was worried about my body’s accent. My stock of dried meat is getting low. I think I’ll go out hunting.

I go hunting, make charcoal, and make dried meat. Another week passed as I worked on various tasks while keeping an eye on my ageing body.

It had been two weeks since I had been injured, and my injuries had healed completely. My body felt lighter than before, thanks to the increase in my level after defeating the hobgoblin. My stockpile of food had also increased, and my mind had become more relaxed.

This reminded me of the incident in the village. It is killing an unknown person and taking their belongings. In a town in the countryside where monsters are rampant, I think it is unavoidable to make such a choice.

However, as a person whose life is threatened, I can’t say the same.

It would be best if you had a hard life, so I forgive you. I can’t say, “I forgive you. My heart is smaller than a plastic bottle cap.

My injuries have healed, and my life has become more stable. I start to have some free time. As I do, the events in the village often come to my mind.

I was indebted to the village for treating my injuries.

However, the hobgoblins that I had risked my life to defeat were robbed of their materials, weapons, and armour, and I was almost killed for no reason. I can’t forgive him for that.

I also think about the village girl. She was the first person I had ever talked to in this world. It was a brief encounter as if we hadn’t even had a proper conversation.

And yet, she was the one who saved my lonely and almost broken heart. It’s a selfish dependence, one-sided gratitude on my part, but I’m grateful nonetheless.

I think it was a village girl who treated my injuries. There is no way the village chief would treat someone who is trying to kill him.

Will the girl be okay? I wonder if the villagers mistreated her for treating me or for letting me go. ……

The village is exclusive and strict with strangers. It’s okay if you want to, but killing people and taking their belongings. There is no way that people who make such choices have good hearts.

It’s better to stay out of it. The village girl should be judged as owing me nothing for rescuing her from the hobgoblin, and she should be able to walk from the village to the town along the road.

The villagers were trying to kill me to get the hobgoblin material from me. This means that the monster materials are worth money.

If monster materials are worth money, then there must be people and organizations living out killing monsters. There must be an organization like the adventurer’s guild, a staple of romance novels.

As someone who was reincarnated into a fantasy world, I have a yearning to be an adventurer. Besides, I have no family, and I don’t know the common sense of this world, so I’ll never get a proper job.

I think the best way to make a living is to become an adventurer. I should forget about the village girl and go to town.

Something in the back of my mind is bothering me. I don’t have the time to worry about others, but I am …….

Go to the village and check if the village girl is being mistreated. If it seems okay, leave. I’m afraid to go to the town even though I think I should.

I can’t judge a person’s level by their appearance. I’ve been living in a village surrounded by monsters for years. There may be fierce monsters that I can’t even touch.

What’s even more frightening is that I’m not prepared to kill anyone. I’m used to killing humanoid creatures with goblins.

However, goblins are incapable of communicating through words. Would they be able to kill a human who could share with them? Even if they could, would they not be crushed by guilt? ……

Will I be able to remain calm when I see people screaming, begging for their lives, and cursing as they die? ……

During the battle, if I hesitate even for a moment, death will easily reap my life. I was born in a peaceful country, Japan, and I was raised with moral education.

I was born in a peaceful country, Japan, and was brought up with a moral education from a young age. From the perspective of preserving the species, I have an intuitive sense of rejection that kills my kind an abomination.

As I was lounging around my base, writhing in anguish, my brainy thoughts, which can be called my personality trait, came out.

If you’re worried about it, check on the village girl. Not ready for murder? Even though they are monsters, how many lives have they taken?

The village chief and his cronies tried to kill you, and you made fun of the protagonist for avoiding murder to the extreme in a novel or something.

Don’t try to be a good guy. My brain is wasting time worrying about it. Remember the Nozaki family motto.

I heard the brain inside me whispering that. Yes, it was a waste of time to worry about it. We’ve always had a “hit and run” mentality, haven’t we?

Thinking about this, the haze in my chest cleared up. Then, as if I were saying to myself, I said aloud the Nozaki family motto.

The Nozaki family motto. Repay a favour twice and a grudge ten times.

It was simple enough. All he had to do was return the favour to the village girl and return the village chief’s grudge.

The fear of committing murder? Once you’ve killed one person, you don’t care anymore. They’re pigs who don’t mind robbing and killing.

I didn’t have to worry about it from the beginning. How refreshing it feels. Please wait for me, village girl, wait for me, the village chief.

I smiled wickedly and got ready to go to the village.
